E34

its a nice car specially f you could get one with the M50 engine,

try to get 520 rather than the 518 purely on better performance.

A friend bought a 525 for 12/50, all depends on the condition and the history.

Specially if you are not running much, its a beauty to have.

Good luck

Seen quite a few of these old E34s on the roads lately.. most look mint, with new paint, nice alloys, angel eyes etc. looks like folks are buying em cheap and doing em up. Pretty good deal really, since you get a lot of car for the (relatively little) money and when tidied up, they do look impressive.

Well.. a BMW E34 with M50 vanos engine is a real pleasure to Drive.. Car is a bit heavy and you feel a real differance when you speed up..

But better go for a 520I or a 525I (But very fewin the country) b'coz a 518I is a 4cylinder 1800cc engine which is a bit underpowered to the size and weight of the car and would not save on fuel as well if you wanna feel the pleasure of Driving a BM.

(Fuel efficency is not merely on the engine capacity as many people think.. there is a power to weight ratio which matters as well)

Also many cars still have the prestige look and a "double headlight flash" will make even a bus diver to give you room to overtake

If you check today's ##### there is a 518 white colour car (which appeared for many week for months..., !!!!)

so shoud be able to get at a bargain price...

BUT DON'T TOUCH A BMW IF IT'S HACKED...spending can be endless....estimates will definitely go for a six...

Also I saw a 1993 brand new 18-XXXX 520I car as well with M50 vanos engine in today's #####. But the price he was looking at was bit too high...1780/= if I can remember correct...

Is it worth to buy an E34 car? I saw some E34s hitting somewhere in colombo. All i have to say is E34 is a pretty girl <3. Hw much will cost to buy a properly maintained E34? with VANOS system in it? Usually im nt a daily basis vehicle user.

thanks in advance

The E34 is indeed one good aging beauty ! There are a few good examples around and it would be hard to find a decent one in good nick for a decent price. The fairly ok ones could go between 1.3M to 1.6M depending on the engine, features and mileage. But a very well looked after one can go as far as 2M+. I recently saw a black (301-XXXX) at the Specialist for sale and the owner was quoting 2.2M for it. It was a mint 520i example and trust me, if I had the money and the means I would have gone for it ! Heard that it was sold recently.

If you are looking for the power and performance package 525i followed by the 520i. A 520 or 525 with a VANOS unit will be a +. There are a number of 518i, but heavily under powered and not the best to drive. If its a 5 it has to be a 6 pot and not a 4 ! Also, if you do find one, always ask for maintenance records and history of the vehicle. You can get an idea whether the vehicle has been serviced regularly and also get an idea from the place where it has been maintained.

Hi guys,

Check with Milroy, who is the well known name for BMW repairs at Kelaniya..

(He actually maintains more BM's than the agents....same like "Dayarathna baasunnahe" for Benz))

He might be able to help to get a good BMW 520I or a 525I.

But 2.2mn I feel it's too high...301- number should be b coz it's a recon.

FYI.. my 1994 brand new 520I was valued by De Silva motors about a year ago for 1.8mn + when once I wanted to sell it.

But you cannot get that price in reality..., 1.4 - 1.6mn would be the actual price for a good car...But there are hacked cars for even 850/= 900/=

Spcially look on body condition and how neat the interior is some cars have gonethrough colour changes ... dashboard of these models are bit vulnerable and tends to crack..

So finding a good car is a bit of a challenge..

Hi Harindraj77

I agree you with you 200%. Milroy is a good resource if you would like to get your hands on a good one.

I agree that 2M+ is too much, but it has been sold for ~2M and I know the previous owner, met him a number of times at Milroys. Yes it should be a recon cause it had the M20 six cylinder engine. The previous owner has done everything that needs to be done (rebuilt engine as well) and it was restored to 100%—the lucky new owner can just enjoy the ride in the years to come. Also, price wise, no matter how well its maintained, and although the new owners do not have anything to do in terms of repairs and maintenance, you always get hit with the price as the price is compared with the others in the market which need attention. Happened to me twice in the past. :(

Btw, do you still have your car? or was it sold? What colour is it?

Cheers

E34s are old cars but very nice to drive indeed, properly maintained e34's go between 1.2-1.8 mil these are

the 525i cars with the m50 vanos engine, id tell you to go for one without vanos because vanos is

known to give problems, the non vanos engines have a better build and breathe better at high rpm's

something you want in a sedan perfomance car. as any aged car it will need maintainence.

go for one with a good service history and go for non vanos these engines love to rev

May I ask what issue in the VANOS you are referring to? I have the M52 engine with VANOS, and I believe it has better top end power delivery. Specially when the VANOS kicks in at around 3500 RPM.

There is a repair kit for the VANOS should it cause issues..

The m50 was one of the first engines to come out with the vanos system, and the m50 vanos did give some problems after 10 years, one of the problems

were the faulty crank shaft sensor and VANOS jamming.

The reason i said non vanos engines are better because of this, The vanos engine has more low end torque that i will accept and

say is a good thing, but non vanos engines have more aggressive CAMS that peak at higher revs they also have double valve

springs to accomodate the rev happy nature of the engine.

All im saying is if you want to rev out the motor the non-vanos is more fun.

Guys,

sorry to pull this up again, need to know any views on the M20 engine, car is a e34 520i, had a look at one and need to know if anyone has any experience with this model and engine, wondering whether to give the e30 and move to this.

Thanks

The e34 m20b20 (520i) in my opinion is not the favored engine for the e34, its underpowered. the

m43 518i is better than this engine i heard. i own a m50 vanos and have driven many m20 cars and

my suggestion to you would be to find a car with an m50 engine. if your looking for power, reliabilty

and pure driving pleasure m50 hands down. then again the m20 is 12 valve where the m50 is 24 valve

i believe there is an mint condition

m50 520i vanos for sale i can let you know the details if you are interested

my dad had one ages back.. think it was one of the first few that came down.. it was a red manual 520i.. 16 sri 0999... i had driven it only a very few times.. i thought it was the best car in the world, but then again i was 15 at the time..

i used to see the car around those days, once i saw the seats were really cracking... but not seen it for ages... does anyone have anyidea what ever happened to it..

There' s 1991 white E34 (18-)advertised in autola**.com.

Just like to hear about 'recent' E34s ? About parts and reliability ? 'cos those' re almost 20 years old now.

I saw lots of you guys recommand M50 VANOS. But M20 said to be very relaible and cheap to maintain. ('cos there' s a '88 model 16- even for less than a E30 price)
