may i suggest we focus all our questions and concerns to sylvi in this thread rather than going OT on other valid important threads?

Sir,

Very well said.

But all our members in the forum cannot spend a Cent and find time to file a case in courts for a verdict like first Driving license case.

Wijesinghe.

Sylvi,

Different people have different prioratizations for thier limited financial assets. So could it be that they dont want to soend it on a legal battle rather than on other more significant needs?

No-one's stopping you from filing a case if you so want to :)

I'd like to ask Sylvi a question.. one that we asked some time ago but he smoothly forgot.

Who are the most manufacturers that use boxer engines?

Sir,

The answer to your question Mr Delish is that All manufacturers use boxer engines nowadays as is easier to remove fanbelts and drive in rivers...

Your comment shows that you are an uneducated and third class person not going to good school and that you have incurable syndrome..

You boys are gonna get me in trouble if you keep making me LOL like this!

Sir, please understood English very well. What is this word LOL... is it short for THOL... like the one I used to kiss when I was in my younger days in a reputed Boys school in Colombo where only upper class people comes? Those days we used to remove our BELTS and have fun with our THOLS... is that what you mean? We used to KISS Coconut husk THOLS also , but that belongs to our Servant girls from our Tea estate. Nice THOLS they were.

Ok, here's my reply....

I don't think you have read good English to understand what I wrote.

You want me to to Retire No No No.You made a spelling mistake (theis) I have never come across that word in English.

I will be active till I die it is God's Wish.

Dear Sir,

Ok, sorry I din't expect you would compare your self to a tyre, whatever you say, tyres get worn out over time and if we don't retread the tyre or replace it, there's a higher probability of running on the rims pretty soon, so don't regret later :D

Nooo, i never asked you to retire, why would I, how can I? After all you are decades older than me, you deserve respect, though you don't earn it around here :P Anyways, people do small mistakes like that, not everyone tries to act perfect like you, so don't mind. Ya, I'll also pray to god that you stay active on this forum to deliver us all the humor and make us more active on this forum :)

Well, I can be WRONG, but I guess, our Sir wouldn't be much fond of Sinhala language (Coz even his English writing is super-perfect :P)

Besides according to him, he is from a well educated, English schooled background, who probably is from some Royal family, as he states he was born with some spoon, though he din't state where the spoon was when he was born....

Dedicated to that BUGGER...

On the ‘Snooty’ and ‘Yak’ in language and politics

Last week I wrote an article about the ongoing debate about ‘English standards’. There is a school of thought that is of the view that ‘Standard English’ is an untenable proposition. They say there are ‘Englishes’ and that ‘Sri Lankan English(es)’ are of the same value as, say, BBC English (whatever that may mean). ‘English Our Way’ then, according to them, is the ‘way to go’. My contention is that this will only entrench existing language hierarchies and associated tyrannies while hoodwinking what the class that is championing this by-appearance ‘progressive’ approach to English-learning call ‘yakkos’ that at the end of the day they will be accorded same stature as the late Ravi John.

I argued that given the fact that hierarchies and tyrannies exist, and that English is a weapon that is used to perpetuate these, it is imperative that the ‘English(es)’ associated with them be acquired as part of a larger project of liberation. I am of the view that Yak- English, to coin a name, can have its place in the English Sun if and only if the yakkos master Snooty English to a point that the snooty cannot out-English them.

Scan the English newspapers published in Sri Lanka (there aren’t that many) and you will see why I make this argument. The snootiness of most of the writers is nauseating. Some are smart enough to coat their snootiness in elaborate theory but it is not entirely disguisable.

This phenomenon was clearly evident during the recently concluded Presidential Election. There were a lot of objections raised about the ‘Sahodara Samaagama’ (ref the Rajapaksa clan), but it was certainly revealing that the objectors have never found problems with other such ‘samaagam’ (companies/clans) such as the Senanayakes, Bandaranaikes, Ratwattes, Wijewardenas etc. What was the difference here? Well, the Rajapaksas were not from the Snooty Class. They were not from Cinnamon Gardens. They were not Oxbridge types. They were redda and beniyama types who couldn’t speak Snooty English but had, horror of all horrors, put one over the Snooty English Speaking class.

Snooty English

Rewind to December 2009 and January 2010. There was no mention of the fact that the Rajapaksas did not speak Snooty English. They were not ridiculed for speaking Yak-English, although I am willing to bet that this was talked about in private. ‘Officially’, it was about family bandyism, nepotism, corruption etc. Interestingly, the Snooty English scribes who ranted and raved about the Rajapaksas were hard pressed to praise Sarath Fonseka who too had been seen as part of the Yak-English crowd until he ‘broke ranks’ so to speak. Interestingly too, they were loathe to investigate corruption charges against Fonseka and his new found friends. There were squeaky clean candidates in the fray or at least those who were far less scarred by mischief-making than the men in front. No, it was about defeating Rajapaksa.

There was one saving grace, an argumentative frill: ‘Regime Change’. The problem with that thesis is that if one is serious one has to talk about the replacement as well. But our Snooty English speakers were not sophisticated enough mentally to realize that they were stripping themselves naked when they refused to talk about the dark side of the candidate they were backing and of course his pals. No, they didn’t even say that it was a consolation prize they were looking to get.

Today, the Sunday Leader (which, we were told officially decided to back Fonseka) is ranting against the UNP Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, not because they love him less, but they love the party more. They hate the Rajapaksas much more than they hate Wickremesinghe, but they will bring down the latter because he doesn’t have what it takes to bring down the former.

I find it ridiculous to believe that the Sunday Leader did not know what the UNP leader was up to all these years, given that Lasantha Wickramatunga was one of Wickremesinghe’s closest confidantes. The point is, the UNP and its leadership are corrupt and if corruption is being objected to, then both the UPFA and the UNP would be rubbished weekly. No, it has to do with something else and I suspect it is the language issue; not Sinhala and/or Tamil, but English, Snooty and Yak.

It’s been more than 4 months since these Snooty English Speakers offered unqualified support to Sarath Fonseka (there were of course others who used Snooty English but were more Yak than Snooty in their politics, language-related and otherwise, who were able to offer valid arguments in favour of Fonseka while acknowledging that the UNP/JVP combo with the likes of ace communalists such as Hakeem and Sampanthan thrown in were certainly no saints). Four months is long enough for such scribes and commentators to look back and ask themselves, ‘Why did I support Fonseka so uncritically, why did I predict a close-race just to boost the man’s image and why did I think it would be a close-race in the first place?’

Dress preference

I have no illusions about the Rajapaksas or about people wearing redi-beniyam or about people speaking Yak-English. I prefer Yak Politics to Snooty Politics and these are not categories that correspond to preferred English, Yak or Snooty. But if the Snooty in the UNP are ready to be honest with themselves they would ask whether or not they supported Premadasa with the same enthusiasm they supported J.R. or Dudley and if not whether the lackluster character of support had to do with his darker side or his redi-beniyam cultural antecedents and Yak preferences/defaults in language.

There’s this anecdote about Queen Elizabeth the First. Apparently she was raped by a commoner. At the end of it, she had asked, ‘Tell me my good man, is this what the common people call f******?’ The answer being in the affirmative, the Queen is reported to have said, ‘Far too good for the common people’. This is what the entire Snooty-Yak division in English Language politics is about. ‘Our English’ (the English of those who have the sharpened weapon and who use it without qualms to divide, rule, humiliate etc) is ‘far too good for the yakkos’. Therefore they are given the ‘Yak’ option!

It’s a club-thing. Join it and you are required to be Snooty. The ‘Yakkos’ aspire to be Snooty because they’d rather be a hammer than a nail, a sparrow than a snail. It’s the white-wannabe equivalent of the black disease of apartheid.

The members will say it’s not about language or background or dress-preference, but that’s all rubbish. It’s the antipathy to things Yak and people whose pride, self-identity and self-worth come clad in a redi-beniyama. You leave behind all this when you obtain membership. Indeed it is when you re-colour image in the hues of the privileged that your membership application is even considered.

No one is making the case for ‘Yakkos’ to remain Yak and that there is nothing wrong in this, and most importantly that they can learn ‘Snooty English’ and still not lose their Yak touch and indeed they must not lose this unless they don’t mind losing all sense of who they are, where they are and where they came from. I am.
