Might as well join the bandwagon...

My first and only accident (knock on wood):

Was October 21st 2005...my last car, 94 mazda protege. I was driving with my housemates to go buy some stuff, and theres these 2 stupid intersections near my house. It's a main street with a 3 way stop at one T intersection, with another T immediately after it, with a stop sign only for the minor road joining the main street. Anyway..this Ford Ranger was at the stop sign, at a complete stand still as I was driving past it on the main road, when suddenly the woman driving it decides to turn into the road. I was doing about 25mph, and I'm assuming she was doing about the same (there was a bit of traffic), but the truck hit the side of my car right by the passenger side door, and she doesn't step on the brake..so pushes my car till it swings around and almost hits a car coming from the other direction. That protege was one flimsy car, everything was totally bent, including the roof. Both my housemates were on the side that got hit, it was a miracle that they were both unharmed given how thin those doors are!

Anyway, turned out that the woman driving the truck didn't have a license, and the truck belonged to her son...and it wasn't insured. I had only liability coverage, but luckily my policy also covered uninsured drivers, so it paid for my car. The only visible damage on the truck was a small dent on the front bumper!

I was actually really surprised about how hassle free the whole claim procedure was, and I had a new car within a few weeks...

Getting a claim in those countries has always been easier, but you are gonna be paying hell of a lot as premium from next year of your insurance, also you will be loosing your no claim bonuses if they are not protected.

well, it depends on whose fault the accident was. Somebody ran a stop sign and rammed into me, and my insurance only paid it because the other perosn was uninsured. As I was not responsible for the accident, or for them having to pay my damages my premiums didn't go up at all. But yes, insurance is very very expensive here! I pay $600 for 6 months for just liability coverage. But it also depends a lot on where you live...my insurnace just went up by $450 last year cos I moved to CA.

  • 3 years later...

in a life filled with broken bones and missing teeth and few times slightly escaping death on the freeway and in SL i have alot of accidents on 2weels 3 weels and 4 but except the accidents i had with my pushbike the first major accident on weels was before O/L i never had lisence and our old L300 was at home after getting a new paint job with out any windscreen or shutters and i manage to pamper my mum to give me the keys so i can go and bring bread for the family from the local shop i went as fast as i can to the shop and was showing off with some weelspin when got the loaf of bread and was driving like a total nutcase cos there were no traffic and those days our area ws not that crouded with traffic it was just one big old sleepy town to try the van to the max i took it to a smaller road i beleave me i was totally at it .... and suddenlly out of no where it started raining and to escape it i was putting the peddle to the metel when i was really close to my house i saw few kids playing cricket on the road and they were just about to stop the game cos of rain and out of no where one kid around 10 years old jumped to the middle of the road with a tennis ball and he was afraid and here i was rolling down this thin road at a breath taking speed i tried to aviod the boy by taking the right corner of the road but the kid jumped to the right so i took the left corner and the kid followed and finally it was really close and i thought of hitting the brakes and i was inthe middle of the road and the kid was dirrectly infront of me handbrakes footbrakes were not enough to stop my monster and with alot of tyre screams it went and hit the boy head on ....luckyly he hit the crash bar in the van and i found him in a hedge with his head bleeding inever knew what to do and i took him to the dispencary close to my house ..the wounds were serious and we had to take him to the hospital .. on the way i told the kid not to tell i mead the accident and that i just came along and saw what happend and brought you to the hospital and the kid said all this to the word and i escaped without any police trouble ...

but we had to pay the kid for 1 month or so for all his expences including private tution ..... and me getting a vehicle bann for life ....:(

man thats unfair. there's nothing much a driver can do when an idiot jumped to the road. isn’t there a way to claim the money off the pedestrian if the car is only on 3rd party?????????? can't u sue him????

In Sri Lanka, the pedestrian is always right, and above the law. Also applies to tuktuks

Actually, if you are in a car, no matter what happens, you are in the wrong :(

very true...

My first ever car accident was however quite "different"... i hit a MSD escort jeep from the rear right in front of temple trees

i took my eyes off the road for like half a second to change the track from me ipod all of a sudden the msd jeep that was in front of me had come to an unplanned stop :P

No thing happened to the old toyota landcruiser that had a big ass rear bumper thingy but i busted both my head lights, busted the bonnet etc etc

the coppers however were quite polite...quite shockingly :)

on 2 wheels i've only had one accident but couple of dozens of falls at least :P

No im not....i dont feel any comfort with that thing.. it wasnt only my fault at all. I was riding so fast and those dumbs who ddnt have any idea about signs or rules, just put that bike rite infront of my cedia. They didnt have headlamps or even a signal light. How could i recognize them under the dark? Noway...

I did everything i could do. but its too late.... i hardly saw they were off the ground and i hit against a wall.

I dont allow any other to overtake me illegally or do some "3 Wheel" tricks against me. But i play fair all da time. Dats y i faced such number of accidents.

i presume this wasnt he first time you wee driving in Sri Lanka or were in a car traveling in Sri Lanka. So this kinda thing is expected, and by law-of-the-jungle you SHOULD know to anticipate such scenarios and keep your speed in tact.

oh well, what happened happened. Hope you at least learned a lesson through it. If you didnt, i'm sorry but a Honda EG8 really is the car for you, cos you seem to be the stereotypical EG8 driver.

DKG.. how many EG8 s you have crashed? looking at the statement i think you must have crashed EG8s at least five , six times of your 20 major crashes

Could have waited another month to bump this thread, then it could have been considered something like an anniversary or something lol :D

Anyway you never know, DKG could be a Rock city drifter, maybe when it comes to drifting minor accidents could be ignored, maybe DKG means Drift King of (Athu)Galpura or something :)
