Ken Block's Subaru-based TRAX STI

Via Autoblog & HyperBeast

On the heels of Ken Block’s insane Gymkhana videos and the groundbreaking snowboarding/rally part to close out DC’s MTN.LAB 1.5 video, the DC Co-Founder and Rally Team Driver has joined with Subaru to make the world’s fastest cat track operation automobile for backcountry access for snowboarding.

The TRAX STI is an experimental automobile that starts with Block’s competition-ready Subaru WRX STI before ditching the tires, adding snow cat tracks, and upgrading to some next-level suspension to create the ultimate backcountry shred car. Prepared by Vermont SportsCar, performance modifications include 400-hp and features Group N competition rally dampers made by EXE-TC and a KAPS 5-speed close-ratio dog-engagement gearbox. Under the hood sits a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled STI engine tuned with a MOTEC M800 ECU.

Completing the TRAX STI is a sleigh to be pulled behind the car, designed to hold four snowboarders, their snowboards, and all their gear. The sleigh’s body is 100 percent custom designed and constructed of hand-laid fiberglass—though the sleigh is not seen in this teaser video, look for it in future videos next year. Altogether, this is one car ready for backcountry access and snowboarding.

Ken Block's rally Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta rally car that Ken Block will campaign in America revealed. It's a monster

26th January 2010

Youtube hero Ken Block is famed for his spectacular drifts, and now he’s drifting over to Ford to become the first American to compete in the WRC in 2010.

42-year-old Ken made his name online, spanking his Subaru Impreza WRX STi around disused airfields in his ‘Gymkhana’ series of videos. Now, though, he’s teamed up with Monster Energy and created the Monster World Rally Team, ditching his Scooby for a Ford Focus RS.

First, though, he’ll be trialing this rather excellent Ford Fiesta racer in American rallies. The Monster-sponsored rally car looks blooming tremendous, and packs a 2-litre turbo engine that sends its power through all four wheels.

Watch a video of Ken Block's Ford Fiesta here

And that Focus? It’ll be set up by M-Sport, who prepares all of Ford’s world rally entries. ‘I am stoked to be rallying in a Ford’, Block says. ‘They are an impressive force in the sport. From the days of the 1970s Escorts to the Group B RS200, to the modern-day Focus and now the Fiesta, Ford has an excellent history within rally. I couldn't be happier to be part of this amazing heritage. Not to mention my dad would be proud. He was a true Ford guy.’

The aim is to use his first season as a shakedown, before aiming for the top spot in 2011. ‘Racing in the World Rally Championship has always been a dream of mine but I'd still be dreaming if I promised podiums in the near future’, says Block. ‘I will be going head-to-head with the greatest drivers on the planet. And sure, I will be giving it my all but my main objective for 2010 is to develop into a competitive driver for 2011 and beyond.’

Btw, if he has paddle shifters, why does he have a clutch?

= Sequential manual transmission

The WRC site confirms this stating that: "All WRC cars have four wheel drive and most have six-speed semi-automatic gearboxes. Electronically controlled shifting systems allow the driver to make clutchless gearchanges in around four hundredths of a second - as fast as on a Formula One car. The cars have a clutch, but the driver tends to only use it to move off from a standing start."
