Good to see an old school Lancer owner in the forum. I'll tell you the best place to check on what you want to do. There is a site dedicated to 1st gen lancers. try 1st Generation Lancer where you will have many people from around the world sharing their love for the cars they have.

Hope admins dont mind me posting that link. ;)

Now that would be a cool project – wish I can help and will definitely recommend a place if it’s Ok by the MODS. As at present I got a original woden Steering will with MMC logo if u need 1

Small request – pls don’t kill the original look as I’ve seen some been massacred whilst modifications have been done.

Best wishes on the project

Why not check with Mr Todd.I recall he had a nicely rally modified white Lancer in Mid 90s.Remember he removed front bumper and fixed for driving lights.Call him and check.

Was wondering what is happening to ur uncle's car. Good to hear that you will be restoring it. Good luck with it machang, sadly I'm selling my old one. Yes I wanted to bring back the old school mitsu back to good running condition, but gave up the idea becos it was too good to take apart.

As per the bumpers I think you should be able to find a good set from around Colombo, but am not sure whether it'll be the same as what ws originally in your car. If I'm not mistaken its a 78 model so the bumpers are different from the older versions (i Light and L light). You can check the above website if you cant find the required parts here in Sri Lanka.

MRM why not check out what the Rally cars looked like and get on those lines for the exterior visual part. I recall seeing pics of Rally Lancers on the East African Safari when I was a kid. I was impressed! :)

For the engine, may I suggest a twin weber carbie conversion (expensive but worth it) so that it is period. Maybe you can find a 1600 engine as well. Polish and port the head and get some nice SS headers and a decent diameter exhaust.

These Lancer are quite tail happy aren't they? I drove my uncles car when I was quite young and very early in my driving life. I remember how torquey the engine was for just 1400cc and how easy it was to fling around as the car felt so light. But if you went even slightly overboard the rear end would try to overtake you. I had a scary experience driving back from Kelaniya once :o . It was the first time I ever lost traction in a car  .

I wonder if there was an Mitsu IRS system that would fit in easily!!?? If not just lower a bit and fit wider wheels/tyres at the rear. Nice wide five slotters will look very 70's cool.

For the interior you need to have a three (holed) spoke smallish wheel with a leather or wood rim with a matching gear knob. Rev counter is a must as well I guess. And can you mate a 5 speed box from the SL model? That'll be cool.

What's the braking like on these cars? Disc/Drum, booseted? Can't remember...........

Like the others mentioned pls stay conservative and do it tastefully or else it will end up looking like a Thorana on wheels like that beetle that was discussed.

I'd also have a small Mitsu WW2 Zero fighter model hanging from the inside rear view mirror B)

thanks Gummy & GTAm.

the car already has a 1600 engine in it & partly rally prepared with the additional set of speedo meters on the passenger side , 2 recaro front seats. & it really moves as i remember 8-9yrs back.

even the front bumber is in tact, only thing is it has got rusted , rear bumper was removed about 10yrs back & cant locate it now as it has got misplaced over the yrs

even i Like the Rally look with nice 4 driving lights in front & a wider set of wheels from that era .

brakes front disks & rear drums with servo .

before i bought the mini i was begging my uncle to sell this to me, he really dont want to part with it. so the final conclusion was to restore it together.

We have a 1978 Lancer (tube light model) and its in top condition with a working AC however the previous owner/s has hacked the carburettor trying to modify it and now it does just 6-7kmpl in colombo with the AC

Where can we buy a agood 2nd hand carburettor fo this car it has a 1245 CC Orion engine

I also need to buy the badge in the bonnet (not the 3 diamonds but the old one with a blue back ground)

Nice to see someone with the passion for modifying an A72 Lancer. I myself have a 1979 Lancer A72 V (Station Wagon) and I've been having it for the last 15 years. I have just finished restoring the engine completely with the addition of some performance mods. :) I was able to find ALL the (new) parts for the 4G33 engine at Panchikawatte.

I also did a disk brake conversion and now it's undergoing a steering restoration because of a worn out steering box. I can gurantee that you can still find any part (engine, body, interior etc.) in Panchikawatte. In fact, I was amazed after seeing the number of Lancers bought to be scrapped. Some still having usable parts. So keep searching. :)

Good luck with your modification. Start slow, and turn her into a beast! :D

@BLu3HaZe:

We're talking about a 32 year old car here man, it took me nearly 3 months to a complete electrical system restoration, another 4 months to just find the parts for the engine overhaul, been working on the steering box for the last month, took about another month to find the parts for the disk brake conversion. Unlike new cars, restoring a classic takes time. You'll understand if and when you decide to start restoring a car like this. It takes a lifetime, and in the end, it's worth it! :)

By the way, I'm a newbie to the forum, thanks for the "welcome". I just replied because it was nice to see someone else who's working on the same car as I am, and as a heads up for anyone who might want to know about where to find parts for the car.

Err dude, wasn't this a two year old thread? rolleyes.gif I'm sure they'd have done a bit more than just sit around and wait :)

I doubt the originator of the thread is around anymore. Maybe you can share some of your restoration pics and other info here. :) Good luck mate..

Hey Davy,

Great to see your patience, dedication & the enthusiasm during the restoration project.

By the way would you mind sharing with me as to where exactly in Panchikawatta you were able to spot the items.

I almost spent around 8 months to completely restore (engine + body) my 1987 Colt Hatch & still am stuck with few stuffs here & there.

Appreciate if you can gemme' some contacts down there, cheers!

really? three months?...pardon me but I thought them old jap's wire harnesses are pretty straight forward and simple, furthurmore the parts are all readily available....so 3 months is a bit exaggerated innit?...unless your electric guy works at a snails pace.

Croozer,

Thank you for your appreciation. Can you please tell me what kind of parts you’re looking for? Right now, I’ll give you the places I have in hand. I’ll be going to the workshop on Saturday, and the guy working on my car will be able to give me more info on where he purchased parts for the engine and so on.

For all windscreen and rubber beadings, door moldings: (I found all the beadings for my Lancer here)

Gunaratne Motor Stores

249, Darley Road, Colombo 10.

Found some really valuable emblems, moldings, wiring accessories here:

Nandana Auto Motives

259, Darley Road, Colombo 10

This is a guy from the scrap yards in Panchikawatta. USEFUL! (He will find you any reconditioned/used part where you can’t find anywhere else. I got the front disk brake set, a steering box, complete wire harness from him)

HUSSAIN (077 6267414, 0777721262, 0770707696)

No. 441/4, Sri Sangaraja Mawatha, Colombo 10

I guess you didn’t have any problem in finding parts for your engine. They’re everywhere! :D

That’s about it for now. I will find you the rest ASAP. Stand by. :)

My Lancer was neglected for over a year and it was just sitting in a garage and rats have feasted themselves on the main wire harness! :( It was badly damaged so I had to find a harness that was an exact match to what was in the car. I didn't want to do a cheap "insulation tape" job on it.

No, Parts are NOT readily available. This is what took most of the time. (Close to 2 months perhaps) I had to find a harness and the only place I found one was at the Panchikawatta scrap yard. Those fellows removed it from a car right in front of my eyes and gave it to me.

The reason why it took so long was because I wanted it to be perfect and just like the original specs. I doubt you’ve seen a Lancer A72 that has a PVC insulated wire harness and according to the factory spec. colour codes. :) It’s really hard to find a car this old with all electrical components in working order.

And yes, I guess the electrician was a slow coach as well! :D

Hey Davy,

Thank you very much machang, some really useful contacts as I see.

Btw is it LP Gunaratne? Heard they do a pretty good job - anyway I was to pay them a visit as both my rear door winders are screwed up & also I need to ensure that the beedings are all good & smooth.

Well as you said my garage guys didn't have much issues finding engine stuff - in fact I replaced all 4 pistons with new ones.

My immediate requirement is to hunt for an "inner arm" for the wiper/s. AFAIK they say its impossible to find one but will need to adjust a compatible one. I will defa contact this guy soon & will try my luck. Davy, thanks once again mate, cheers!
