I've been feeling depressed and annoyed all Sunday and today as well , eventhough this was kind of expected. Yes we can blame Bush, China and India but I'm afraid we have to blame the Chinthanaya for screwing up the economy. If our economy was on a better footing we could have weathered the storm a lot better.

Inflation is rampant, interest rates are sky high, large export oriented manufacturing companies are re-trenching staff, Turnover of local market manufacturers/supplier and dropping like crazy, while the freakin government spends like crazy on themselves. We could lose GSP+ in the near future and our governer of the CB says that GSP is not that important. Does he even know that a large number of smaller garment factories are running because of this advantage? Thousands will lose their jobs.

Did you guys read about the story regarding the ministry of nation Building that was carried in the news papers a few weeks ago? Less than 10 officials using something like 63 vehicles and a monthly fuel bill of 750,000/-:blink: !!!! And they're supposed to be nation-building!!!????

May be we've all interpreted this wrong.... SL govt is probably doing nation building .... it's just that they've not specified which Nation it is... :angry-smiley-048:

well on those tiny moped thingies...

personally i'm on the opinion of making it compulsory to have a license to any motorized vehicle that's used in public roads.

I've faced too many instances where both teens and older folks not having any sense about how to use a road safely and to do so with minimal hassle to other road users...

Even if one of those things hit your vehicle and bugger off...you have no way to track them down cos they wont be having plates...

Well said Velocity!

Machan I remember in Autoblog.com that the most highly demand car was the Suzuki Swift 1992 model that it fetched around USD 7500 ( Which was the Brand New Price At That Time )

Few years back if you were in a SWIFT all the big Mercs and Hummers would look down upon you like a piece of shit.

But oh well now its the total opposite. In the next couple of years you will see all the Big Names will have to look upon the more fuel efficient small vehicales. ( A repeat of the 60's )

1960 when the fuel crisis occurred Sri Lanka was not that much affected.... But Trust me. We are now so dependant on Fuel and also our Economy is so FRAGILE, that soon Sri Lanka will have no strength economically to pay the OIL Bills.

Soon we will be rationing FUEL and all Big Vehicales and Luxury Vehicales will loose there market value over night.

If some one thinks that the FUEL PRICE Will ever go down it will be a Dream ( Unless US starts to RE DRILL again and also in Alaska) . All the Stronger Economies are bidding Higher for Oil to get more to run their Economies. We will be like puppets who have no financial Capability to do anything

A serious observation. I just saw so many Bullock Carts back in operation when i was going down south. <_<

Last week I had a visit at Reva showroom which is located close to Pizza Hut - Union Place. Currently they have stopped importing the car since it's price would be around 3 million including all taxes. As they said, they have only sold 6 units (for past 4 years) and the car has been introduced with a price of 1.6 million ealier and they said that, they have one used Reva that would be sold for 1.7 million.

Despite of all these, most discouraging thing on this car is, the batteries it has (totally 6) might have to be replaced wthin 1 and half years and the price for replacement (only for 6 batteries) costs Rs: 400,000.00 (4 laks).

So, the simple theory is, even you have a car having a fuel economy of 10 Km per litre, you would not have to pump gas worth of 4 laks for 2 years !. :violent-smiley-099:

I've been feeling depressed and annoyed all Sunday and today as well , eventhough this was kind of expected.

Dude, try not to think about these things. Our nation has been screwed, its just getting even more screwed, thats all.

Don't blame the leaders, they are only as good as the people who elected them.

To solve the problems here would require a paradigm shift in the way people think. basically, Sri Lankans will have to take responsibility for the problems instead of blaming others. Not only that, they will have to learn to think - and solve their problems using reason, logic and sense, without outsourcing these problems to corrupt clueless uneducated people.

Since that won't happen in our lifetime, its best if we try to find something like oil. After all, take the saudis. They are not the brightest people on earth but they can afford to be stupid, and to throw money at problems they encounter, with the hope that eventually, statistically, they will reach a solution. Our people try that too, but sadly the money is lacking, ergo the present situation.

Well, you have two choices as I see it. Either shrug, laugh, and say to yourself "Just another day in SL", or continue to fight the system and fail.

It's like when a bus driver decides to overtake. Not even Moses himself can stop the bus driver. So might as well give way and let them do it.

The time has come here, when the living envy the dead :D

Is Japan facing a post-car society?

Could the country that gave us the NSX, Godzilla -- and the other Godzilla -- and The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift be on the verge of giving up cars for good? With car buying down by close to 33-percent since 1990, Japan is claimed to be in the grips of kuruma banare, which, for Japanese carmakers, is the polar opposite of hakuna matata.

It's being labeled the "demotorization" process, and it involves large numbers of people in Japan's urban centers not buying cars. Surveys have revealed a variety of reasons, from the cost of purchase and ownership, to vehicles simply not being status symbols anymore, to cars being passé -- as in "so 20th century." The greatest worry is that young folks are simply not into cars, preferring cell phones and gadgets to Cubes and keis. Losing their audience before the love affair has even begun is no doubt causing JDM manufacturers to lose sleep.

And the even worse news is that the trend is expected to continue, with another 1.2-percent drop in sales predicted this year. Japanese carmakers are fighting the perception that cars aren't cool or worth the price by expanding their marketing and sales efforts in an attempt to form emotional bonds in other ways. It is certain, however, that they aren't the only ones interested in the outcome: Japan's kuruma banare is expected to befall Europe as well. Thanks for the tip, catgirlshyla!

well guys...end of the day...government is corrupt...there are lotsa of financial mis-management, skim-offs, rip-off etc etc etc

so though world oil prices have gone up...we're feeling the hit stronger all thanks to mess ups by those who are in power imho :violent-smiley-099:

like someone right pointed out...the present prices are with an import tax... government can't afford to reduce this tax and give us some relief cos this is one of their biggest revenue generators... and it is a very expensive government to maintain...

middle class and the low income bracket folks will take the biggest hit as usual... Little bit of war propaganda and some folks will easily forget and even justify these price hikes and whatever else the government does :(

Have you guys noticed that Galle road remains closed from galle face hotel to fort after that bombing incident to this date causing huge traffic jams wasting lotsa fuel for the country and also loss of productive hours. If closing roads was a viable solution to bombings i can understand... :(

we not only have corrupt officials but also insanely stupid ones :action-smiley-060:

Today morning I have seen on TV that India is going to reduce or remove taxes on fuel to reduce the fuel prices in India. Unfortunately our government doesn't want to consider it even.

this news item explains that government imposed an additional import duty on diesel any truth about this reuters news?

"COLOMBO, May 28 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan oil retailer Lanka IOC LIOC.CM on Wednesday said it had raised diesel prices by 20 rupees ($0.185) per litre from midnight (1830 GMT), the third increase in a week.

On Thursday Lanka IOC announced a 20 rupee hike in diesel prices, and hiked again by 10 rupees a litre on Sunday, in line with fuel price increases by state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corp. (Ceypetco).

Countries across Asia have been hiking subsidised fuel prices as the global benchmark U.S. crude CLc1 hit a record high $135.09 a barrel last week, before falling back to $128.30, still up over 30 percent this year.

The subsidiary of Indian Oil (IOC.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) said it had to increase diesel prices after the government imposed an additional import duty.

"On Saturday we were not aware of a custom import duty 24.50 rupee surcharge on petrol, with that we still make a 1.50 rupee loss on petrol and incur a loss of 24 rupees on every litre of diesel, so we were compelled to increase diesel by 20 rupees," said Lanka IOC managing director K. Ramakrishnan."
