Was Prabakaran At Bombed Location?

Recommended Posts

The Air Force says there was strong speculation that LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabakaran was at the location in Killinochchi which came under an air raid this morning. Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Andi Wijesoriya said “we heard about this and are awaiting confirmation.”

Wow...

This must be the remaning beech hisar unit then :)

any idea whether Migs and Kfirs operate side by side or was it done by one type... heard it was a low flying dive bombing mission which is usually undertaken by the 27's

No news on tamilnet just yet but defence blogs are super active

as much as i like to believe that, highly doubt that will be the case mate.

Most probably Pottu will replace Praba and Praba's wife might be the "symbolic" leader for the outfit...

But his loss will be a strong blow to them...morale wise :)

Bit too early to comment on the strategy used.Yes it was mix-squadron formation, used Kfirs & Migs.

MiG 27 is a dedicated Ground attack Jet. Very accurate low level bombing can be done. Recent good results came with new Low-Low-Low strategy!

Not All KingAirs are HISAR!

'revenue license fees for vehicles in the Western Province to be increased by 200% - 400%'

ripper, can you please name few blogs you were referring to

beginning of the END at least! be positive MAN!

in the interest of automobile fans in this form i'm not going to comment on this as it'll turn into a full blown 'useless' argument on the 'foolish' concept called archiving peace through war.

i wish i am as optimistic as you mate, specially when it comes to sri lankan politics. i lost what was left of it when chinthanaya came to power.

Here it is...

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 23 January 2008, 13:11 GMT]

Liberation Tigers Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan Wednesday evening refuted the claims by the Sri Lanka Air Force that it had hit a location of the leader of the LTTE Velupillai Pirapaharan Wednesday morning. Stating that Colombo was spreading false propaganda, Mr. Ilanthirayan said the SLAF attack targeted civilian settlements at Vaddakkachchi twice between 11:10 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. and in the evening between 5:15 and 6:00 p.m.

Mr. Ilanthirayan was responding to questions raised by media in Colombo.

Earlier in the day, the SLAF had claimed that it had hit a key LTTE base describing the target as LTTE's nerve centre and stating it was awaiting confirmation on whether the LTTE leader was residing in the target, which it named as "X-ray base".

Colombo was engaged in such false propaganda, also during the Tsunami catastrophe and on many occasions earlier, he said.

In Last sortie they've used two types of birds. Kfirs and Mig27M's. Normally for low flying sorties they use MIGs. this time Kfir used "Dive bomb" (To Get An idea of "Dive Bombing" Watch Movie stealth. buggers used to bomb a place in Myanmar or somewhere in South East asia using that method. ps: Don't bye those fake Aircrafts though :action-smiley-060: ) method to bomb the place. cos Delta Winged aircrafts isn't effective in low flying sorties. they've used 500lb Bunker busters plus 2,000 lb MK84 Hammer type Dumb bombs to bomb the hell out of Tigers. Amazing thing is Our boys using 70's technology to Beat the Crap out of Kotia. :angry-smiley-048:

bit about the Beach King Air 200 HISAR

HISAR provides customers with an advanced ground mapping and surveillance

capability that is similar to the technology used on the U-2 spy plane. The X-

band radar weighs approximately 250 kg, including the onboard workstation, and

is designed for installation on almost any business-class turboprop or

executive jet aircraft, or suitable unmanned aerial vehicles.

The system provides precise imagery and intelligence under almost any

weather condition. During the typical modes of operation, the radar provides

wide-area moving target indication, narrow sector searches, strip and spot

searches, and sea surveillance. The system can be used for a wide variety of

mission applications including border surveillance, coastal surveillance, oil

spill detection, disaster assessment, and economic exclusion zone monitoring.

There are also a large number of integrated options that can be added to

the HISAR system to meet a customer's unique requirements. Some of these

options include forward-looking infrared (FLIR), long-range optical sensor,

and a variety of enhanced radios, datalinks, and ground stations.

Variants of the HISAR system are currently operational in the U.S. Army's

Airborne Reconnaissance Low-Multifunction (ARL-M) program.

With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global

technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, and

business and special mission aircraft.

I suppose the delta wing's only drawback would be the need to maintain higher air speed over the wing surface to maintain enough lift...

It doesn't say that you can't operate at low altitudes as long as the air speed is high enough

possibly the munitions we carry and the weapons systems we have need for us to slow down a bit... just thinking aloud :)

just remembered that the most famous delta winged aircraft ever, the concorde had a tilting nose for landings to provide better visibility to the pilots :)

possibly due the air craft wings having to maintain a steep angle of attack to harness maximum lift at lower speeds...

not the best for slower flight speeds on an ground attack combat mission :angry-smiley-048:

THE LTTE in total disarray ordered the closure of all shops in Kilinochchi and maintained radio silence following yesterday’s decapitating air strike on a hideout known as ‘X-ray base’, at Iranamadu, frequented by LTTE leader Prabhakaran around 11.15 yesterday morning.

Although the fate of the Tiger chief was not immediately known, the military was confident that he could have been in the heavily fortified bunker at the time of the raid. "We are awaiting confirmation from our intelligence operatives on the ground," a high ranking military officer told The Island adding that he was almost certain Prabhakaran had been there at that time. "The bunker has been reduced to dust," he claimed, "several LTTE leaders may have bee killed."

He admitted that deadly bunker busters weighing about 1,000 kg each had been used as the SLAF ‘didn’t want to leave anything to chance’.

Migs and Kfirs, on a low flying mission had targeted the base, located East of the Iranamadu Tank in the Kalmadukulama area the SLAF sources said.

Military Intelligence had been watching the LTTE leader’s movements in the Wanni during the last few days. They had reported their findings about his presence in this hideout to the SLAF.

According to Air Force spokesman Wing Commander Andrew Wijesuriya the sorties were carried out on information obtained through real-time air surveillance and ground reconnaissance. He also said that the targeted location had been under reconnaissance for some time. Combat pilots had confirmed that the target was accurately hit, he said.

The Defence Ministry said in a communique that the air raid had been timed for a "special" activity that was going on at the LTTE base.

However, sources refrained from commenting further on the issue. They said the targeted ‘terror hub’ was located in a thick jungle patch, North of the LTTE's runway in Iranamadu. The area has been long demarcated as a ‘high security zone’ out of bounds for civilians.

The SLAF has been continuously supporting the ground troops in their ongoing operations in the North and the Vanni.

On November 26, it was reported that Prabhakaran had received minor injuries in an attack by the SLAF but the LTTE website denied the story.

However, the LTTE leadership was furious that a number of its top leaders, as well as second level local leaders, were also targeted in the combined operations by the armed forces and the police commandos in the recent months. In retaliation they have started attacking civilians in the deep south and other parts of the island. (Courtesy: The Island)

well ... it does spread a little cheer and hope that the war would be soon over which makes the common man temporarily forget the rising cost of living ....

personally i'm not that optimistic about a quick finish when looking at how Israel (with a much more advanced military) is still fighting with the Hamas group. Even though they eliminated a few leaders via gunships/rockets the group seem to be still active ...

you have a point but you gotta remember that uncle Velu is almost a god to these guys... His demise would be a huge huge loss since his existence over so many decades putting on stiff resistance is what turns on the ltte supporting diaspora abroad...

Diaspora is the cash cow...

If Praba makes an exit chances are the diaspora support will also thin down a bit.. there might be internal power struggles within the outfit with pottu, charles and soosai not trusting each other etc...

Don't think it'll finish off the outfit overnight but it'll be the beginning of the end :)

Hell if there's peace, we can have a nice AL roadtrip in those areas :)
