Thanx a lot for the info Hola... actually hola, i have a N/A and havent done any modifications to the car ...its all stock...what would happen if i install the muffler, with out the header?

In terms of performance it wouldnt make a very big difference. Changing the muffler is only one part of the jobto make it a full performance exhaust you'll have to change the header and the exhaust pipes as well. Using bigger pipes that match your muffler would make the exhaust restriction low. And machan equipment such as catalytic converters increase the exhaust restrictions. So what some people do is they remove that as well. But this would be disastrous on the environment. But if your catalytic converter is not working and if you dont plan to replace one(ofcourse you wouldnt do it in srilanka) i dont see a reason as to why you keep it.

Archon checkout the picture below it'll show you the difference between a stock exhaust system and a full after markat one.

I d suggest dropping in a K&N cone air filter if it is a smooth beat you need.. though it would not be as loud.. there is the good possibility of you gaining a few extra bhps along with the lovely humming sound... and yes there are aftermarket parts available for ya engine..

The Marino GT uses a 4AGE engine and the rest uses the 4AFE engine.. a good thorough search via ebay would give ya plenty of results based on the 4AGE engine but if you hunt correctly you could get the header for the 4AFE too...

Hey Nim.... I too underwent the same agony buddy.. there was a time when i was crazy to get this shit over it and went to a dude specializing in pipe work.. unfortunately.. he was not willing as it is quite complex and time consuming...

@ Hola - Yours aint a VTEC... a 4-2-1 would do you good man.. 4-1 would give much higher speeds though..

Hi neXGen! ya! my one is a 4AFE that means the valve train is designed for economical use as i remember :( but still it has good acceleration!!!...yes i really concerned about installing an open air filter in the future...and i will remember the brand you said..thanx!! actually, primarily i expect my muffler to worn these 3wheel guys and bikers form getting my way all the time when im driving...!!! haa haa sounds funny ha? but hope that it will work! at least a little :lol: "masso elawenawa wage waduk!!" haa haa haa!

Really muchang i drive by the horn rather than the steering!!!! it is the reality ...sorry ppl... most of our SL ppl ignore if the horn is pressed once! they need at least 6 beeps to get the attention.... and they almost make no response to the headlights....

Just coz others drive like idiots, it is no reason to do the same urself. Coz as far as the other road users are concerned, YOU become one of THEM. And u loose the right to complain if ur guilty of the crime urself. U want some support (from people with brains) then do the right thing.

Hey Hola, off to a great start encouraging people to drive better. But of course, u'd rather the Lions club do the preaching. Great positive contribution to the community that.

:blink::blink::blink: Hola said it as a joke!... nothing serious in it ne? :(:(:(

Archon

U'd be suprised at the things Hola says and the things Hola does. We've had to deal with him for a long time in this forum, so it isn't entirely without experience. Thinks he's summin of a rebel, apparently.

what is that thing machan? what sort of a engine is it?

oops sorry! the header seems to be just a one part of this engine! ....made a mistake!!!

This pic shows a header right!!! previously i was confused, as i was used to call this the "Exhaust Manifold"

If yours is the 4AFE, i could kinda point you towards where the sun shines bright ;-) I would not suggest getting a beat muffler as Nim pointed, it would reduce your fuel efficiency to a good extent as it might increase the backpressure and thus your engine would have to work harder...

My engine frankly is a 5AFE model but via the good advice of porkster got the 4AFE header somehow installed into my car... so far the smoothness has increased and a good margin of performance gain.. after you hopefully get the header done you could then get the exhaut job done from the catback onwards.. once again there are certain specs which ought to be followed in order to make the new system work at its best.. this said you would not realize any increased fuel consumption..

Believe me these mods would come in handy especially when you wanna overtake some big ass vehicle who aint giving room... hows your fuel efficiency dude?

now this is getting interesting! Nim says it reduces the back pressure and you says it increase the back pressure! does it depend on the type of the muffler? and ow! my fuel efficiency! Errr....actually I used a fussy method to calculate the efficiency and it was not correct and it turned out to be 9.4Km per Ltr...(outstation + with in city ) ...im gonna calculate it once a gain soon...currently it is running on octaine95...

I also think muffler Reduce the Back pressure, and we need to call some specialist to answer this question maybe Nigel B)

99% Sri Lankn cars with mufflers dont have anything done to Header or any major modifications, and if u go for a Branderd muffler or Full Exhaust System u may get bit of power bt Normally Rear Exhaust reduce Back preassure and ur car will go bit faster,

Sorry buddy.. what i meant was that the normal beat mufflers which are just merely to sound loud are not fuel efficient.. there are barrels which would reduce backpressure namely Magnaflow etc... and reducing backpressure alone wont improve performance.. there should be a certain amount of backpressure in order to sustain the vacuuming effect of the exhaust gases.. as the gas moves out of the engine and into the exhaust pipe this vacuum pulls the gas outwards.. it aint called vacuum actually but somewhat like eh.. cant remember the bloody scientific term maybe permeability? :) if this required backpressure is non-existence it would seem that the engine would have to work a bit harder pushin the gases out thus reducing efficiency and maybe performance...

9.4 outstation n city? should do better considering it to be a Corolla based engine... well outstation mostly lol..

U see the people who actually know things answering on this thread man? Guys are starting to understand that coming in on these threads and saying things generated post-whore type "Really" and "Don't lie" comments and so have elected to stay out. Sad state of affairs in AL :(

Ya! i agree with you,,,, too much and too low back pressure both ain’t good for the engine! But Nim says after the installation of his muffler he feels a bit increase in performance....

Try searching for Magnaflow mufflers over here dude... not sure whether you could find em but would sure sound nice and give you a small increment hopefully.. better yet.. get the entire exhaust done! :) if you could save up, lets say, 40-50k you could get a header, resonator, muffler and also get the piping done too... plus you would gain some good bhps...

well as far as i can remember: if your car is 1.6 Liter, then the deal is simple(not really, but then if you work it out correctly) you can actually replace your Engine head (is this wot you guys are talking here?) with a GT spec (20 Valve) header. you see the GT engine is 4A-GE where as yours is 4A-FE, so if its a 1.6 only the head is different.

i had a Ceres 1.6 (ECT-S) and i was advised to make the change, of course after the header replacement you will have to change the transmission, breaks, clutch, etc. :P hehe.. better benefits. consult the experts.

Basically similiar to dropping in an entirely new engine yeah?

The thread's header refers to the exhaust manifold Kim... would it be possible to drop in a 4AGE engine to lets say a basic corolla chassis?
