Armored 7 Series

i was looking at some pics online from the incident today (since LBN is still not on) and saw pics of the armored 7 series.

it looks to have taken quite a hit specially from the first pic where hoses and stuff are all out. plus the windshield and the rest of the car all have holes...guess that would be shrapnel...

plus are those tires run flats...?

'Fuzzo', could you post a link to the news site you were browsing? Thanks.

yup, damn looks like that car took quite a hit, and amazing how effective that armouring was! the passenger compartment looks completely intact. what the hell is that hose thats hanging out running from the grille to under the front bumper?? some kind of beading?

good advertising for the company who did the armour plating.

i think this is the first time those bmws were tested against a LTTE bomb.

but what i thought was, why coudnt the driver still continue with the driving.

Because i have seen that any Driver who is well trained should be able to drive a car if its operational at last 500-700 yards away from the Danger Zone.

Because any person who gets out from that car can be prone to any Sniper Attack !!!

Pretty impressive, must be a powerful engine as well-to support all that armoured weight. So what happens to this car now? is it repairable? lots of shrapnel holes so guess it would take a lot of body work. Anyone knows how much these cars are worth?

they're probably 740iL (V8) or 750iL (V12) cars... i'd assume the latter...

The car's exterior shell was not penetrated, not in any significant way at least, so technically the driver should have been fit enough to keep driving. Good point there 'velocity'.

Interestingly in the pictures of the incident there are no other Beemers visiable; however I distinctly remember reading that the convoy consisted of four identical amoured limos and other security vehicles. Could it be that the other armoured 7's were in drivable condition and drove out of the strike area?

LOL, i have watched those V*P Driver Training Videos.

:)

anyway truly worth the amount spend on these. I think these cars were air freighted as well during the CBK regime...

Hi Guys,

Talking about the driver being able to drive away, remember when a bomb explodes its not onlt shrapnel that cause damage, its also the shock wave it generates, which might be dampened by armouring but it cannot totally protect against the energy, so depending on the strength of the blast and the proximity to the blast, you might get knocked unconcious momentarilly as soon as the blast happens,

I think in this case support vehicles might have arrived really fast and evacuated the people in the vehicle, thus no attempt of driving away might not have been needed,

also notice the landrover seems to have slammed into the beamer, maybe there was other vehicles obstructing its path .......

Certainly money well spent, its a real pity though that this has started again and the frequency has picked up a bit,

Rather than the open convoy vehicles the commandos use they should be provided with armoured land rovers as well i think, those rovers offer absolutely no protection, forget about bombs, not even bullets .....

the presidential security personnels landrovers are heavily armored. i was at barista the day the presidant returned from india and saw the armored defenders.

even he only had 2 cars ...so i don't think the defence sec. would have had 4 bimmers..

No This is not the first time BMWs and armour plated Mercs displayed the superiority in Sri Lanka.

In Dec 1999 Former president Kumarathungas life was saved from a suicide bomber even when she was satanding outside the row of V*P cars. One Merc too the whole sharpnel attack.she was driven away from another damaged BMW.

In December 2004 a BMW assigend to one V*P caught in Tsunami at Yala. The car was washed inland 250m from where it parked.car was very badly damaged from outside but only a new battery was needed to restart it after it was transported to colombo two weeks after the incident.

But the third car didn't display the same spirit at "piththala Junction".The car was disabled few meters from the incident.Initially because driver stoped the car as the airbags blocked the visibility.then came the unexpected series of electrical and pneumatic faults.soon found a faulty comuter disabled the main computer.A damaged hydraulic line is blamed for the unexpected pneumatic lock. This caused V*P locked inside and faulty computer prevented a manual release. Now the rest of the fleet is re-programmed for a higher scale attack.A vital hydraulic line is temporary secured and will be re-positioned soon by a German engineering team.So no worries VIPs.

Yo! An inside scoop! Alright! What else you got? Know anything about the the Defender being turned into the Beemer, like someone mentioned? Was it trying to shield the car from the 3 Wheeler by getting in between or what?

Wrong info again machan! The defender was positioned slightly left and aft of rear left door...called "seven o clock position" all the way throught the ill fated journey. The blast simply threw the defender towards the BMW.No one of the escort jeep recalled seeing the three wheeler and never had time to do all mentioned "heroic" moves.

Anyone wanna see (possibly) the first ever picture taken of the blast? :)B)

Armour was never penetrated.nothing happened inside exept some minor upholdstory damage and some loose artilcles thrown inside due heavy vibration.Hyd line was damaged low right aft of the engine bay.now relocated and secured.Computor snag is a bit of a problem and under study.

Possibly terrorists wanted to test the car.Now the car will come out even stronger for next test with some added Sri Lankan touch to it!!!

ok, I just saw that the driver was hurt and the V*P had a gash in face, I assumed there was some penetration. Could just have been an interior panel comning lose. IMHO the armor did its job, I only wish the hoses/electricals in the bay had some protection (steel or kevlar brading) so the car could've been driven a lil longer (and ofcourse run-flats). Do you know what kinda engine it had?

I agree with you on testing the car, it seems like the terrorists were testing the limits of the armor, hope the govt. can remedy the situ fast.

I am looking at ur pics; is the location of the fire where the 3wheeler was? or did a nearby car catch fire?
