I was offered a Peugeot 407, a 2008 made diesel one with an engine capacity of 1490cc bought with a permit and which is accident free and with a mileage of 70,000. Is the price reasonable?

A 407 for 45 lakhs.. Haha who is asking that price? And the 407 never came with a 1.5 diesel. Are you sure this is a 407 we are talking about?

Yep according to the info he gave me. Anyway I’m a noob when it comes to vehicles.

Why? what’s wrong with 407?

Lots of issues with them. From the auto gearbox to electronics, although the engine is know to be reliable when maintained properly using genuine spare parts. But of course, expensive. Some of them were bought by people who found it to be a cheap car to buy, but of course not cheap to maintain. If you really want a good to drive Peugeot, a 406 is better. Relative to a Japanese car of the same year, a 406 costs more to maintain but its still manageable.

But since you are new to the topic of cars, I say a Civic FD1 or Mazda 3 will offer you great pleasure, comfort and reliability/cost of maintenance for your budget. They look good too and are even more solidly built than most modern Peugeots.

My uncle sold his 2008 manual transmission 2.0L diesel 407 for 2.2 mil just before the lock-down. Mileage was around 120k. So you decide whether worth it or not. AFAIK 407's came with 3 different diesel engines. 1.6L, 2.0L and 2.2L. Just check the engine capacity.

Thank you for enlightening me. So can you please suggest me a good sedan for 4 mil that will not be a white elephant and at the same time offer driving pleasure. Can  a civic fd1/Mazda 3 be bought for 4 mil. I asked for this in a separate thread, but didn’t get any response.

I’ve decided against it. Thank you

Those 2 cars can be had for less than that. Search up some previous autolanka threads discussing the above cars using the Google search bar and alot of info will come up. Your budget range (4mil) has been covered so many times in the past.

The Civic FD1 has a 1800cc i-VTEC (R18) engine which is quite a nice unit. Can even get some cars with options like sunroof, paddle shifters and leather. The Resale value is strong but not as strong as the 1600cc FD4 variant. Parts are reasonably priced for a 10-15 year old car and have good availability. the agents have parts too but of course you will get robbed there.

The Mazda 3/Axela on the other hand is known as the poor man's BMW due to the solid Build quality and fun to drive aspect. Reliable car, parts are well available and a few specialist shops around too. There are only small differences between the Axela and 3 (engine capacity difference of 100cc, intended for different markets and a few options) search up the forums for more info. The 3 is slightly more powerful than the Axela. Can get a BK5P (2004-2008) car for less than 3 or even a BL5P (2008 - 2013) for less than 4.

This forum is a knowledge gold mine for Lancers too, I can't emphasize that enough. Read around about the Lancer EX and see if that suits you.

If you like hatchbacks, the Swift RS is also a nice car to drive and fairly new compared to the other cars mentioned.

Both had manual gearbox as an option but are very very rare. A few weeks back an FD1 manual and Mazda3 manual came up for sale in FB.

Whatever the car is, take it to a reputable service center or inspection place like the Agents (Stafford for Honda, Colonial for Mazda, Unimo for Mitsubishi, A*W for Suzuki), CarChecks or Grease monkey. Drive and see if it suits your taste. Best of luck with the purchase!

Thank you for the response. I did dig the forum for Lancer ex few months back and found out the brat thread which offers hell of a lot of info. But my problem is how the car market dynamics have changed with the epidemic. The 2011-12 built lancer ex gls went for around 4mil before corona. But has it changed with the situation?

407 for 4.5 Mil is absurd. Plenty people here to support it and im pretty sure even to top end ones dont go beyond the 3Mil mark.

Anyway may i suggest a few cars within your budget that may be a much better buy.

Here are a few options. search each car in the forum and you can know its ups down and faults to make your mind

JDM:

Sedans

Civic FD, Accord (2008-11), Grace (Read about the DCT and Note that its not japan manufactured)

Lancer EX (2008-10)

Bluebird Sylphy ( 2008-11 Check for dashboard replacements and engine mount wear)

Axio ( Personally use a 2014 one, you should be able to find one for 4.5 Mil), Allion 260 (2008 ish),

SUV's

Honda CRV (2007-10)

Nissan X Trail (2008)

Toyota Hilux 2006-7 ( Not an SUV but daaamn its a hell of a buy if you can dig around u can find one for around 4.5 mil)

L200 -  2008 (also a nice all rounder)

Hatchbacks

Toyota Passo (Personally used and can recommend, 2014 for 2.8Mil, 2018 is 3.8 Mil), Aqua (Same but maintenance is tricky, 2.9-3.5 mil), Vitz (Popular in LK market), Auris (Basically a corolla hatch, 2010ish for around 3.7 Mil)

Honda Fit GP1( Check the oil burning engine issue), GP5 ( Check for DCT issue)

Mazda Demio (Underdog car but a pretty decent pick)

Nissan March( Used both K11 and K12, Its a good buy except for the really low height in AK12)

Euros

Audi A1 ( Read well about it, its not the best option but you get the Audi logo for 4.5 mil if that what you need )

BMW 320d 2004 ( check around and you might be able to find one for 4.5-4.8 mil)

Mercedes E200 2004 ( Great car, high maintenance , you can find one within your budget)

Wow. no way? Decent price. (Despite all you buggers making fun of it: At that price and mileage I'd certainly give it a whirl ! )
