All you need to do is verify from the RMV that the duplicate CR has been legally obtained. If there's another vehicle with the original CR, they will be in trouble, not you. No one can be 100% certain that there won't be another vehicle with the origin CR.

At the same time, if you buy a vehicle with an original CR, no one can be 100% certain that there won't be another vehicle with a duplicate version of the same CR. Get the documents checked. That's the only way.

Thinking about the revenue license information in the RMV database. Guess when a DS office issuing a revenue license, they check it with the RMV. If more than one license issued for same CR (same chassis number), that should be display.

But not sure whether they have allowed one-to-many relationship in their  Database which should not. :P

Shouldn't be a problem ideally -you can verify from RMV (or you'll get to know when you're transferring ? - just kidding )

He he.. thanx for the information matroska

Yes, vehicles with Duplicate CR's are offered 10% less than the threshold level lent by most banks/NBFI's

Also one day transfers are usually not permitted on cars with duplicate CR's

Vehicles with a duplicate CR demands a low market value, so if its a genuine duplicate CR and can be verified as other members stated and also the vehicle is in good condition ,  you could grab a good bargain.

Faced a similar situation long back where lost the original book of a Chevrolet Cruise and sold it off well over 200k of market price at that time as no one wanted to buy it sadly, though we took a genuine duplicate CR for it.

Yes they actually take a bit of time - if someone has gotten a transfer within a day for a duplicate CR it's probably by greasing a palm or two.
