New Toyota Harrier 4th Generation to be unveil during June 2020

Dear All,

Brief below will provide a quick snapshot of features & specifications of all new Toyota Harrier 2021 model. Appreciate your comments.

The 4th generation XU80 Toyota Harrier is set to premiere in June this year in Japan. New model will come along with advanced styling & feature updates that make the vehicle even more unique & sportier than before, leading the path towards a new Urban SUV genre.

Main Features:

1.Exterior

  • The new Harrier XU80 has a front view that emphasizes its sharp and fearless styling through the continuity of lines flowing from the front upper grill through to the headlamps. The signature lamps emphasize the individuality and technical advancement of the new Harrier, enabling it to be easily distinguished from a distance.
    • Projector LED Head lamps with L shape DRLs
  • Despite a simple structure, the side view offers a dynamically changing body cross section that creates a rich expressiveness while giving a powerful sense of movement.
  • The combination of a narrowed coupe cabin with sports car-like wheel housings extending from both sides of the body gives a generous ruggedness to the rear view.
  • The light from a thin, sharp line of tail lamps and stop lamps gives it an overwhelming sense of presence.
  • LED High mount Stop Lamp ( Long Type )
  • A total of seven muted colors will be available, including Precious Black Pearl <219>, Slate Gray Metallic <1K9>, White Pearl Crystal Shine <070>,  Black <202>, Sensual Red Mica <3T3>, Steel Blonde Metallic <4X1>, Dark Blue Mica <8X8>
  • 19 Inch multi spoke alloys with 225/55R19 Tires

2.Interior

  • The center console presents a wide and imposing impression of a horse's saddle. It combines with an instrument panel set within the edges of the saddle to present a generous ruggedness with an emphasis on individuality.
  • Extending out from the instrument panel to the door trims on either side, the rich and full dashboard presents a generous breadth, wrapping around the occupants to give a sense of security and comfort.
  • The interior employs tactile synthetic leather to create the image of a natural-looking silhouette wrapped in thick leather, and bentwood-inspired*3 wood tones and piping throughout, presenting a casual air of quality.
  • TFT - Wide Touch center display along with Electrostatic heater control panel
  • A panorama roof, used for the first time by Toyota, is equipped with electric shades and electro-chromatic windows. Dimming the windows fosters a feeling of quality as soft light penetrates the cabin.
  • The interior employs low-contrast browns, grays, and blacks. This calming atmosphere gives the interior space a feeling that is both chic and mature

3.Platform

  • The new Harrier uses the TNGA (GA-K) platform for its basic structure. This creates a highly rigid body with a low center of gravity in pursuit of both ride comfort and vehicle driving performance with a focus on driver sensitivity.
  • The TNGA platform brings with it the latest all-new Dynamic Force Engine and Direct Shift-CVT. Together with the continually evolving Toyota Hybrid System (THS II), the vehicle achieves a direct driving experience and superior fuel performance. With hybrid specifications also including 2WD models, the new Harrier offers more options than ever.
    • 2.5L Hybrid engine (THS II) : A25A-FXS with two variants;
      • Front Wheel Drive
      • Four Wheel Drive (E-Four)
    • 2.0L Gasoline engine : M20A-FKS with two variants ;
      • Front Wheel Drive
      • Four Wheel Drive
  • The suspension system benefits from MacPherson struts at the front and a double wishbone setup at the rear. The front and rear suspension geometry has also been optimized to produce a well balanced rigid body. Through thorough tuning and testing, Toyota has pursued a ride that is both solid and graceful.
  • To improve steering convergence in the new Harrier, from the first moment driving off and then on the highways, shock absorbers that ensure smooth pedal stroke even in very low speed ranges are used. This enables the driver to feel the tires gripping the road.

4. Advanced Features

  • The new Harrier comes with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS ) Package which includes;
    • Pre Collision Safety (PCS) : Detects pedestrians during the day and at night, as well as cyclists during the day.
    • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) : Supports High Way cruising
    • Radar Cruise Control (RCC) : Includes advanced vehicle speed detection function to support dynamic cruise control
    • Adaptive High Beam (AHB) & Adaptive High Beam System (AHS) : Support night time visibility
    • Road Sign Assist (RSA) : Support road sign detection to limit speed etc.
    • Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) with Parking Support Brakes (Stationary Objects) : Helps reduce and/or mitigate damage from collisions during low-speed driving in parking lots, etc.
    • Blind Sport Monitor (BSM) : Detects approaching vehicles which are in the blind sports
    • Rear Cross Traffic Auto Break : When moving backward from the parking lot, it detects vehicles approaching from the left and right rear of the vehicle
    • Active Cornering Assist (ACA) is employed for braking control to prevent under steering at corners.
  • The Digital Inner Mirror, used for the first time by Toyota, enables recording of images to the front and rear of the vehicle while driving.
  • Coupled with an electric power steering system that responds quickly to steering wheel movement and provides light steering, this creates a feeling of comfort in the vehicle's responsiveness.
  • The hybrid model features a 100-volt (alternating current) / 1,500-watt accessory power outlet. This not only allows the use of electrical products using the same electrical outlets found in the home, but also enables the vehicle to be used as a power generator during blackouts and other times of emergency.
  • Dedicated Communication Module (DCM), Display & Audio system comes as standard with few varients
    • 8 Inch Display, Audio HIFi with 6 speaker system OR T-Connect SD navigation system with 12.3-inch TFT wide touch-display screen, with Smart Device Link (SDL) and other smartphone connectivity. The JBL premium sound system (9 speakers) creates an advanced and realistic acoustic space.
    • Apply Car Play / Android Auto compatibility
    • Smart Phone Connectivity enable to Start the vehicle engine & Air Conditioner via MyToyota Smart Phone Application.

Toyota revelaed the model on th 13th and showed the base grades on the website. However, what is interesting is..Toyota never officially stated what the engines were and all the reports were based on speculations made by the Japanese journalists based on Toyota's trend and the fact that underneath it shares the platform with with the new RAV4. ie. 3ZR-FE being replaced by the M20A and the 2AR getting replaced by the A25A. No big deal..it is accurate with high probability.

However, the thing is the actual performace of the engines is still a question mark as the other specs were not released (eg.weight and such). The weights and such initially were specualtions from the journalists based on the RAV4 and current Harrier and came with a disclaimer :) saying those weights are probably close (and are supposed to change based on panoramic roof being standard or not etc...). Also, being an Urban Crossover Coupe the belief is that the driving dynamics will be different comapred to the RAV4..thus, the vehicle might be dfferently tuned.

The next shocker is going ot be the pricing....again..speculation is that it will not change too much from what it currently is but will slightly go up so that the pricing for a variant starts where the similar variant RAV4's pricing ends.

That is the hybrid variant right? So most probably an Atkinson cycle engine. So when considering the total output of the vehicle it will be the engine plus the hybrid motor output totaling to 298ps (178ps from the engine plus 120 ps from the electric motor) as a system (based on https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/toyota/32186311.html)

Refer below Toyota original press release on XU80 Harrier, where they officially details about engine specs, weight & other features.

https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/toyota/32186311.html

That was not there before when I first posted it on the 13 ! Just the first part :) Like I said..the first indications of the power outputs and weights were purely based on speculation from the car magazine journalists. There were also questions about the logo as to why it has the Toyota logo as opposed to the Harrier logo (if this means this is a global model or a Japan only model..as the previous Harriers were and if it is to be sold out of Japan if it will be the Harrier or something else). People seem to be quite keen on the old school Harrier logo. Also...a little dissapinting that the Turbo 2L has been taken off.

If it goes outside...would be interesting to see if it can compete with the Euro coupe crossovers it was intended to compete with.

Anyway..there are now uncertainties about when any of these cars will be made available. Whole of Japan got put under Emergency Situation and Toyota, Honda and Nissan all announced earlier today that their production is dropping down to 70-80%

Well YOU better know what was actually happening earlier and the whole story/background before being a smart a$$....The earlier press release DID NOT have the engine specs and the weight figures etc...they were merely speculations by auto journalists . So...just because you found an updated press release and then made a thread a few days AFTER it was announced  does not make you the smart aleck you think you are :) . Members these days...such amazing key board warriors :D

Yes..the 2L Turbo is not planned for this because underneath it is the GA-K platform in a crossover guise (which is the RAV4). The 2L Turbo was not planned for the platform.

Few unique things about new Harrier.

1. Instead of Harrier emblem as in previous generations, new model carries Toyota emblem on front grill. This can be an indication that Toyota's future plans to launch this model in other markets. Some claims that there is a chance to launch it in USA as Toyota Venza.

2. Long Range LED High Mount Rear Stop Lamp.

3. Dual exhausts

4.Digital Inner center mirror, used for the first time by Toyota, enables recording of images to the front and rear of the vehicle while driving. So no need of after market dash cams.

5. A panorama sun roof, used for the first time by Toyota, is equipped with electric shades and electro-chromatic windows. Dimming the windows fosters a feeling of quality as soft light penetrates the cabin.

6. Dedicated Communication Module (DCM) powered with MyToyota Smart Phone Application to Start the vehicle engine & Air Conditioner remotely.

7. Packed with advanced Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) features including Road Sign Assist etc.

Such a shame that the 2.0 Turbo isn't going into this generation Harrier.

Given the engine specs and price of the 4th gen in Japan, the Harrier would become non-existent on Lankan roads with the coming generation.

Some one really does like to repeat things whlst not paying attention to what other people say :)

Didn't I say the same thing about the logo and possibly going international ? ?  Did I not also make statements about it being a crossover coupe and how it would actually compete against its European competition ? Maybe I was day dreaming...

One should know that although production ready prototypes carry the Toyota logo (which is what the Harrier's images are right now), the final market version may have the model specific badge for the JDM market (so any implying that the badge has been completely ditched is not accurate as nothing has been revealed. It may or may not appear). The Corolla that was showcased in Japan before release had the Toyota badge but the domestic market variant had the Corolla badge. In fact Toyota has always had a history of retaining their model badges for the JDM market. People who do not know much would say things like that the RAV4 badge changed, etc....but that is because they do not realise that cars like the Vitz, RAV4..had their dealership line badges and were not model badges. There is a reason why Toyota is taking away the dealership badges (and I hope certain pundits would know this); that is because Toyota is moving away from seperate dealership lines (supposed to be from May 2020 but probably will be delayed) and all dealerships sell all Toyota vehicles.

Will the new Harrier be a global model...probably since that is the direction Toyota wants to go (reduce JDM only models unless it meets a specific market need). Will the Harrier be a Toyota in the export market ? No one knows...because it is a luxury crossover it might get badged as a Lexus in some and Toyota in others (just like the older Harriers were).

For the record..stopped by the Toyopet dealer nearby today during my self isolated walk. The dealer does not have official specs yet but have an 8 page pamphlet announcing the model (but reserved for past customers) and that has very limited info. Pre-orders will be accepted from May onwards (assuming virus does not have any effect on it) whilst dealerships will reach out to current Harrier buyers and other key customers from now itself.

Yes...it is not going ot hit the Sri Lankan roads becuse of the tax structure. With the TNGA platform (which Toyota actually learnt from Mazda thoguh their partnership); there are new engines, drive trains and suspension systems being made which makes the car more integrated (like the SKyActive PLATFORM). So the 2L Turbo engine is one of the old school engines (the AR family, although the 8AR itself is only about 5 years old). The only TNGA car it is being somewhat used in is the new Crown (which is not dong so well over here)

It is not a panoramic SUNROOF. It is a Panoramic ROOF (easily misintepreted by many). It is the first time a Toyota will have a panoramic roof The roof has an electronic shade.. But yes..you are right..Panoramic sunroof was there in the current Harrier. It was even there in everything from 90s Hiaces, to Corolla Touring Wagons.

Here is an interesting graphic displaying the entire Toyota/Lexus Crossover/SUV Lineup and where each model stands in the chain.

HI Zeristo,

Thanks for your comments.

Yep, you are correct.

Actually even current 3rd Gen XU60 2.0L [without Turbo] is not that popular in Sri Lanka after 2017 duty revisions. That's why you hardly see XU60 face-lift [i.e. YoM 2017 and above ] models here in SL. So there is a high chance that XU80 might not appear here in SL, unless there is a duty revision.

Regarding comment on Panorama roof; yes it's available in the current XU60 also.

But the uniqueness of new model is nothing but it's a Dimmable Panoramic Roof.  Electro-chromatic feature of the glass allows controlling the degree of light pass-thru, which Toyota claims for the 1st time they have implemented for a Panoramic Roof.  ( uniqueness has nothing to do with electronic shade or Panoramic Roof ; as both features were there for sometime... so no hype to create !!! 🙂 )  If you carefully see video attachment time stamp 1.35 & 1.40 you can observe the difference of dimmable feature.  Also you may refer spec shared by Toyota for clarity.  Thanks

Okay..obviously people are not getting waht this Panoramic business is.

A Panoramic ROOF is different from a Panoramic Sunroof.

A Panoramic Sunroof is a multipanel sunroof that covers a large proportion of the roof so that it has a panoramic view on top. These panels can be tilted or slid accordingly. So it is a portal on the metal roof that covers a large area.

A Panoramic ROOF is a glass panel roof (sometimes taking the place of the entire roof panel). Can the Panoramic roof have sun/moonroofs ? Yes...it will be a seperate panel within the Panoramic roof. Many people do not realise the difference because they simply go by what it looks like rather than the construct of it.

EDIT : Because of the difference, how it can be covered/controlled and the frame around it will differ.

The current Harrier does NOT have a panoramic roof. It has a panoramic sunroof (electric moon roof). The Harrier first got a large sun/moon roof like this in the U30 series. It started off with the AIRS grade and was offered as an option in all the other grades. In that it was called a multipanel moonroof.

EDIT Below is the option selector for the current Harrier.

image.thumb.png.9528069f44c52c4fec943439fce4136e.png

The new Harrier has a PANORAMIC ROOF. Which means the entire roof panel is a glass pane. The shade is controlled electronically. This is the first time a Toyota has had a Panoramic ROOF. Previous vehicles have had only Panoramic sun/moon roofs.

Why is the difference important ?

In the past vehicles did not get panoramic roofs primarily for safety reasons and cost. Glass and other types like vinyl coverings could not provide the required level of safety. In a car, the roof is an integral part for its safety and stregth of its structure (providing a safety cage for the cabin), putting a glass roof meant added weight as well as more flex in the body. The panoramic sun/moonroofs were safer (at least felt safer) because the roof still had a large metal component and the panoramic sun/moon roof was just a portal on that metal roof (it really was not that much safer than a full panoramic roof) and the manufacturers tried to maximize on the metal component as much as possible. In modern times it is not that much of an issue because materials (especially glass) have improved and car design (crumple zones, etc...) have changed.

Second reason it never caught on..especially in hot climate countries, was because of the heat factor...in the past the technologies that were available to cool the cabin and the panoramic glass itself were limited unlike these days. Which meant things like the AC had to work extra time to keep the cabin cool (which effect fuel economy). Having a manual curtain for a panoramic roof is also not a very good option. Because it needs to be rolled it takes up cabin space and to minimize the space being used it would have be made of thin material which would not be good enough to keep the cabin cool. Thus...is the olden days...panoramic roofs were pretty much a novelty feature and not very popular so manufacturers stayed away from it.

EDIT : Replaced Mazda 121 image with a Lexus NX that has an actual Panoramic Roof. See ? N...glass that covers the entire roof. minimal framing in front. The glass pane literally seals against the windscreen

There is no such hype in Japan. The hype was in the foreign media, specifically from Malaysia. A few Japanese magazines picked it up and quoted it as foreign fans doing renderings with the hope for one.

One of the original articles that actually it first appeared on is  (and what has been taken and redacted above):

https://www.wapcar.my/news/Allnew-2021-Toyota-Harrier-GR-Sport-rendered-1916

(as a couresy, it is customary that if an article is copied and pasted, you credit it)

The GR Sport line up is NOT intended to compete with the Merc AMG or BMW M performance packages. That is mainly accomplished by Lexus' F line-up and are the actual models that are to compete with the Euro premium marquees. The Malaysian article refers to the AMG and M package line ups to give an idea as to what GR SPORT is (and what  the GR line up is) not that it comeptes with it. As even the Malaysian article explains, the GR Sport cars are not exclusive Sport cars but cars that have sport inspiredtune ups. So do not assume this to be a sports SUV like the GR Yaris was a sports hatch.

Pre-orders are actually going on for selet customers. What will open up in May is mass market pre-ordering. The orders that are currently going on are for people who are currently looking to buy a Harrier (they are given the optionof purchasing the current model or order the new one..and yes..there are some good deals on the outgoing model).

Right now there has not been a Harrier GR Sport announced...but Toyota quite often announces this well after the model has been launched. The actual Hype that has been around Japan for a while is a RAV4 GR Sport, news of which started buzzing around since Oct/Nov last year and at the time was expected to be seen late 2020.

For those who are interested about the GR lineup..read on:

The old, or current structure that is getting phased out; has three levels.

Level 1 : GR Sport : Mild suspension upgrades and cosmetic upgrades to improve handling. The GR Sport variants are equivelant to the RS trim levels in some vehicles in the past. So these are standard road variants with additional, but minimal welds, same shock struts but with stiffer springs, etc.. They are not necessarily sports cars..but cars with improved handling. GR Sport cars are everything from a Harrier to the Voxy Noah, Vitz (soon to be announced Yaris), Prius/PHEV, Prius Alpha, GT86, CH-R and the Copen . Typically steering is a bit more tuned to be more direct and the ECU is programmed to make the acceleration sharper, etc...

Level 2 : GR : This is where the sport cars actually start.  More welds than the Level 1 cars and strut bars and braces...so far the GR variants have felt a lot more tighter and crisper than GR Sport variants. Also there are level exclusive shocks (at times adjustable) and additional brake updates. Steering and ECU is better tuned to be sharper and aggressive. Not necessarily more powerful but the way it is tuned to deliver the power it is a lot quicker and sharper than the GR Sport. THIS is what is called a GR car. Not the GR Sport variants. The Harrier has never had a GR variant and probably won't.

Level 3: LGRMN imited edition sports cars. This has more agressive suspension..but most of all an upgraded engine.

Now...according to the new way toyota is going...you get

GR Sport : As before. Europe has a Corolla Sport GR Sport which is supposed to be launched in Japan as well next year.

GR <car name> (GR Supra, GR Yaris): This takes the place partially of the GRMN but instead of being limited they are catalog models (i.e. mass production models). So far we have the GR Supra the GR Yaris. Rumored to have  GR Corolla.

This is a simple example that prove some ppl try to show-off that they know everything and assume they can mind read others to make public statements. Let them have fun. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Attaching original Japanese post published on 18th April 2020. All other so called Asian magazines might have refereed or copied stuff from here. Those who know Japanese please read thru.

This is a simple example of a certain person putting their own made up spin on things just to prove someone else wrong and not take any other view that disprove their own ! Which is fine...however, when a person publishes incorrect information and not willing to except or admit the falses ...well...that is not me having fun...that is the other person being a bad community member. So let these people go on with their denial.

Here is more back ground info for those who actually want to know

1.

That is NOT the first Japanese article to refer to the new Harrier GR Sport. In fact this is not even the first time we have seen renderings of the new Harrier. Living in Japan I do see what the hypes are first hand. There is NO such hype in Japan as indicated by certain people !  In fact most serious media and fan bases were distracted by the likes of the GR Yaris and Fit and RAV4 GR Sports and GR Corollas.... The first images of the new Harrier came up in January or so of this year (one of the first articles https://bestcarweb.jp/news/120849)

20200126_Callender_TOYOTA_2020_08.jpg

You have to admit, the rendering is pretty damn close...best car magazines are really good at it. A few renderings of a possible GR Sport Harrier made it out after this was published. It was based on this design and the current GR design elemnts of new GR models. Then everything died off.

the new Harrier was revealed on the 18th of April and a few foreign media sites (specifically from and a few other SEA COuntries) covered it but also put in a rendering of a GR Sport Harrier. the Japanese media picked it up stating that the foreign fan sites are drawing up GR Sport Harriers. Even the Japanese site a certain person linked to just states it was on SNS/Internet.Whether this GR Sport Harrier is one of those original sketches...I honestly cannot remember. However, it was the foreign sites that pretty much announced it and then created some buzz about it. For the last few months Japan has been hyped up about the GR Yaris and new Fit and then everything died up because of the virus and now the hype is what will happen to all these new models and delivery of new vehicles in general.

2. There was no mind reading invloved. Considering the content on certain posts, it is obvious where things have been taken from. When something is a direct copy and paste, it is customary to refer to the original document (that includes Toyota news releases as well). Beyond that, when a written post refers to specific information that only a few articles have stated, it really does not take much to figure out what a probable source could be. Yes...I do appologize that I assumed a certain poster took the content directly from a specific web article, but that does not change the fact that what was stated by the individual was wrong.

Now...about the actual car...some things that people are noticing in terms of design queues:

1. The Panoramic Roof...first time in a Toyota

2. Toyota badge...could be because of a global model and Japanese market could still get the Phoenix (like inthe Corolla)

Both have been pointed out by the other person and discussed above. Two other things:

3. This is the first time the Harrier has gotten a gear shift lever on a seperate floor console. Previous models had it on an extension from the dash.

4.  First time ever the Hybrid Harrier gets a FF variant. Thus, trying to poach a bit more of the market.

Yes...Panoramic SUNROOFS have been there since the 90s or 80s..even the E100 Corolla Touring Wagon had a variant with one as well.....This is a panoramic ROOF....which pretty much translates to a glass roof with an electronically controlled tint/curtain. Aesthetically and functionally is it much different...well...is an Iranian green apple the same as a Fuji red apple ? Yes...but no..but sort of..but kind of..

Having said that...yes there are Lexuses with panoramic roofs that were offered ....in some markets you can custom order a panoramic roof which your Toyota dealer well get done through an authorized fabricator (kind of like how there was a convertible Trueno AE86). But it has not been a standard offering on Toyotas.

Having said that...yes there are Lexuses with panoramic roofs that were offered in some. In fact even the electronic shade..although a first for Toyota (which is the highlight) has been on Lexus models before. Also, in some markets you can custom order a panoramic roof for your Toyota which your Toyota dealer well get done through an authorized fabricator (kind of like how there was a convertible Trueno AE86).

Below is an image of a Lexus NX with a panoramic roof

Lexus Japan Releases Special Edition NX 200t & NX 300h | Lexus ...

As you can see....the framing is minimal and most of what you see there is interior trim (supported by the minimal frame)....the glass roof literally seals up against the windscreen. The panoramic roof in some vehicles slide back as an entire unit.

Now compare that against the panoramic sunroof that is offered in the Lexus R (and the Harriers and other cars). There is more framing due to the railing mechanisms on the side and the sealing mechanism on the front. The frame in front of the first pane that is usually covered with a glass coated metal panel or glass and in some cars it tils up as a wind defloector.

Does it do the same thing ? Yes..gives you a wide view of the sky...but how it does it and what is underneath is somewhat different.
