Really isn't much difference...the CVT and the type of compressors, etc..make the 260 a little bit more fuel efficient, but then the 260 is a heavier car than the 240 and there are other things that makes the difference small. You ahve to understand that engine/gearbox wear and tear plays a part in how efficient the cars are....sometimes the older car with more wear and tear is less efficient than a newer car...but sometimes a newer car can have more wear and tear than an older car.  SO you need to understand, for an old car how the vehicle has been taken care of (maintained) plays a huge deal in how good fuel efficiency is. For example, if the engine and gear box is not working optimally then  fuel efficiency will suffer. Same goes for suspension, brakes, etc...

The biggest concern you should be having right now is not which one of the two is more fuel efficient. Your biggest concern should be to find a 240 or a 260 that is not abused and has been maintained properly and is honest. The Allion has always been a car that has been popular for dressing up. I.e. people hack them..and then make them shiny and turn back the mileage reading when it is time for a quick sale. Because in SL...the shinier and lower mileage the Allion/Premio/Axio; is the more valuable it is.

So...if you come across an honest car that has a some what verifiable service history, and you get a clear report on an 3rd party inspection report, buy it. It doesn't matter if it is a 240 or 260...

The 260 would be slightly better because the CVT keeps the engine spinning at the most efficient rpm. During long trips the 260 would definitely give better fuel figures. There are few points that you should be aware of:

A budget closer to 4million is the territory of the lowest priced 260s show up and highest priced 240s show up. So you’ll be having a marginally better chance of getting a good 240, but you might be paying closer to that of the price of a 260.

Again getting a newer car is always the best thing, but most of the 240 and 260 are beaten to death by now. So you’ll have to be extremely careful.

Considering the 260, it’s a bit harder to maintain than the 240(cvt gearbox requires oil changes at every 40,000km, otherwise the unit will fail)and the AC compressor, engine mounts and shock absorbers require replacements around 100,000km. But most of the 260s might be well over 120,000kms so you’ll only be having some minor fixes to be done.

240 is easier to maintain in every way, because the powertrain is simple and parts are a bit cheaper. But 260 is a bit more comfortable and powerful than the 240.

I had a 121(which shares most of its parts with the 240 such as engine and gearbox )previously and now I own a 260. 121 was cheaper to maintain.

Both 240 and 260 are good cars for what they are (comfort and economy) but they are boring to drive.

Buying a 260 at that price point is like copulating with a call-girl from Swaziland. You're better off looking for a 240 in good condition - one with proper registered owners (ideally) and verifiable maintenance records. If you end up buying a dressed up 260 that is rotten underneath whatever fuel savings will be negated by a massive repair bill.
