Hi,

When stop a car which has auto transmission , what is the correct way?.

its feel some shock when shift to D when the start the car 1st time of the day.  Some one advised  me to  shift the gear lever to N then stop the engine and pull the lever to P position  to fix this .  Is that correct ?.

Tks

Service brake = Brake Pedal next to the accelerator

E-brake = Hand-brake/Parking brake

1. Apply Service brake fully

2. Shift the car to N

3. Apply E-brake fully

4. Release the service brake, Make sure the car is stationary (make sure the car is held by the E-brake)

5. Apply service brake again

6. Shift the car to P

7. Release the service brake

8. Switch the engine off

Get used to this routine. You'll be doing it this way by muscle memory in no time

The shock felt is not when shifting into D. It's when shifting out of P. This is common especially if the car is parked in an incline and it's because the weight of the car is held by the transmission. This happens if you stop the car by shifting to P before engaging the parking brake.

So engage the parking brake always before shifting to P. The steps given by @Hyaenidae is spot on. If you are familiar with the car and the place where you park, you can eliminate step 4 safely, but always good to make sure.
