Project Escort Mk1 4 door 1100cc

Recommended Posts

I am doing up a 4 door 1971 Escort Mk1. 4 door as I have 2 young kids. No expenses spared. Every thing bog standard with no bubble arches or anything. Only extras would be Air Conditioning and some mean wheels.

I am struggling to find some nice old school 4x108 wheels in Sri Lanka. Can anyone direct me to any place?

My first option for wheels would be 15inchx6wide with low profiles.

Car came with 13x5.5 ET+19

Any thoughts on paint? I was thinking of pearl/candy sapphire blue.

Awesome.!!  Update the progress as you go.!

Just about the wheels, you may find that 6 inch wide is a bit too narrow. I`d recommend at least 7 inch. 8 would look great but may need to roll the guards and tires are not plentiful and expensive.

I know 4x108`s may be hard find, but do think about the correct offset as well. I know the low offset wheels required by these RWD cars are not easy to find (unlike FWD offsets such as -35 or -40 which are very common). Please dont use spacers or hack the hubs, find the correct offset with the right center bore for the car and it`ll be worth it in the long run. Good luck.!

Super-lights (wheel style) are a popular option for these.

Good to see another oldschool Ford build for once here. I still have the set of original wheels that I took off the Capri. 15 by 7 I believe, OEM Ford Clover Leaf set. 4x108 of course. I remember it being tough finding wheels that are a direct fit and looked good. Alternatively you can use adapters or modify the hubs to take a different wheel.

About the paint, keep in mind that the pearls and metallics can't be touched up if the need arises.

Thanks for the feedback, definitely not going to hack the hubs or use spaces. 6.5inch may be the maximum i could go with standard arches in the back without tyre poping out. Cheers.. I will keep updated.

Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely not hack the hub nor put spacers. I would like to have 7inch wide  tyres but might not work as not much space in the wheel arch.  Cheers I will keep updates posted.

Thanks for the feedback.. Those capri wheels are nice. I believe 7inch wide won't fit on these MK1 without arch flares.

Adapters are about 1inch wide. This would make my tyres 5-6inch..:) Last option.  Cheers

Have you had a chance to test fit some 15x7`s?  I honestly dont` know much about Escorts and what would work.  But my RWD car (BMW E30) had 14x6`s from factory.

I found that even 16x8`s would fit without any modifications, with just the right offset.

Here`s test fitting some 16x8`s, ET 26 offset :

if you're referring to the wheels on my Capri now, those won't fit for sure. The wheels I suggested were the ones I took off and they would be a direct fit for sure. Because the Clover Leaf came on the Escort XR3i originally. While it's a later gen escort, I'm sure the fitment wouldn't be a problem.

The Wheels I chose for my car needed a lot of modifications to fit. They were 16x8 114.3x5. I had massive arches done and the hubs re-stud.

You're right about adapters taking up an inch but you can correct that with the backspacing of the wheel. Adapters have some debate around them however.
