Lancer CS 1/2/3, ES 5, Mazda Axela

ramdr

Question

Guys,

Looking to by a car with a budget of 2.2mn to 2.8mn. Heard that lancer cs1,2,3 are good options but those are with GDI engines. and 1300 cc engine of CS1 may consume more fuel.

What would be the best option in terms of fuel consumption, reselling value and overall experience?

Lancer CS 1/2/3, ES 5, Mazda Axela?????

If you came across another thread pls share.

For 2.8 you can get a lancer that is less than 10 years old easily - ideally a CS3[The GDI ones are at the lower end of the spectrum around the 2.2 Mill mark] . Fuel consumption won't differ a lot between the 3 models. Resale-wise the ES5 would have the edge.  Overall you would have a higher probability of finding a really good lancer for that budget.

CS1 and CS3 Lancers did not come with GDI engines so you don't need to worry about them.

As for CS2 Lancers with 1500CC engines there are both GDI and PFI versions. Easiest way to recognize one would be checking the CR (the book) - if the car was imported brand new it should have a PFI engine as the local Mitsubishi agent, Unit#d Mot#rs, didn't import Lancers with GDI engines AFAIK. Only reconditioned JDM imports came with GDI.

I think @Davy would be able to provide a more detailed reply on how to differentiate a GDI CS2 from a PFI CS2.

Most of the GDI CS Lancers are pre-facelift ones. A majority of them are CEDIA.

The GDI engine can be identified by it's different intake manifold and fuel injectors. Some GDI engines came with an engine cover that has the GDI logo on it. Some also have the GDI emblem on the front fenders near the side indicators.

@ramdr, The CS Lancer has been discussed at length on the forum. Please search.

@Davy I did some googling and found some pictures of GDI and PFI 4G15 engines, can you take a look at them to see if I got them correct?

It looks like identifying the PFI engine is rather easy even if the engine cover of the GDI engine is not present. As @Davy said the intake manifold (those big pipes behind the engine) is a dead giveaway

Yes, pretty much.

The EFI version of the 4G15 engine that came to Sri Lanka on brand new CS Lancers came with a different intake manifold than what is pictured in the photos you've shared. The intake manifold, rather than branching off into four near the throttle body, it continues as a cylinder, horizontally where they branch off from the underside of the cylinder. See photo below:

The 4G13 engine looks like this too, right?

This pic is from @Sampath Gunasekera's CS1 thread:

So, @ramdr, now you know how to identify a GDI Lancer... Just pop the hood and take a look at the intake manifold. To sum everything up;

SlR2axF.jpg

S2P8ScQ.jpgIf the intake manifold looks like this and/or if it has a engine cover with GDI lettering and/or if it has a GDI emblem anywhere on the body it's a reconditioned JDM Lancer CS2 with a GDI engine.

nsB0ZTa.jpgIf the intake manifold looks like this, it's a reconditioned Lancer CS2 with a PFI (EFI) engine. (So you shouldn't turn down a CS2 just because the CR says it's reconditioned; it could still have a PFI engine)

Es8P2ph.jpgIf the intake manifold looks like this, it's a Brand New import Lancer with a PFI (EFI) engine.

Yeah. All three (4G13, 4G15 and 4G18) engines look pretty similar. The carb version of the 4G13 (only came on the pre facelift CS1) can be identified easily due to the different air intake assembly.

The info plate riveted to the firewall in the engine bay has the model code (CS1, CS2 etc) and the engine code (4G15, 4G18 etc) printed on it.

You're very welcome!

We expect a fair return for our help though :D once you buy your new Lancer/Axela/CIvic you should share some pictures of her with us :)
