New Tax Structure for Cylinder deactivation option?

It seems more and more auto-makers are parting with the downsizing trend and going back to bigger capacity engines, but with cylinder deactivation option.

For example Audi Q3  with smallest engine of 1.4 L has been "upsized" to 1.5 L + cylinder deactivation in the 2018 model.

It will be only a question of time when the Korean and Japanese(Suzuki first?) also provide this feature.

In my opinion this feature should be considered for Tax calculation, since our authorities are excessively reliant on  engine capacity to decide the Tax structure.

The question would be how to define the average/mean Engine capacity, because it is dependent on the driving style and road conditions.

(PS: yes Hybrids with all cylinders deactivation are still taxed at max Engine capacity instead of Emissions/km in  this twisted system, so this post in only intended for sarcasm unless some one with contacts to the Fince ministry sees this?)

The tax system (in no country) is based on engineering principles. Vehicle manufacturers and importers have found novel ways of evading taxes. This is the reason why kei cars came in to existence in Japan  and this is the reason why van importers to US imported vans with rear seats and then removed and threw them off before selling the vans in the US.

It doesn't make any sense to have a tax system which is based on science. In Sri Lanka at least, it all boils down to maximizing government revenue, so expect another novel system in the coming budget.

Most fair and workable tax structure for SL will be based on the CIF value as we don't have the sophistication and the resources to manage tax based on emission levels.

Simple principal higher the value, more luxury leading to more tax.

This should take care of the idiotic tax structure we have where Mercedez C-class will be tax less than the Toyota Corolla

You must be kidding. CIF-based tax structure existed in the past and that was the most abused structure!

At least the current structure cannot be abused (unless manufacturers themselves do that - which will not happen) and everyone is clear on the exact amount of tax that needs to be paid even before they import a vehicle. So clearing agents and random johnnies can't cheat the customer either.

Personally I believe this is the best structure from a Sri Lankan-market perspective.

And is it really a bad thing to have less Marutis and more Jap Suzukis or less Corollas and more Audis????

I'm not complaining will be ordering a C200 paying Allion Tax or may be less.

But this tax system has made certain vehicles go out of market Eg: Prius, Rav 4, X-Trail which are used by average Jonny

Only problem is they treat the Audi just like they did their ali-passa Corolla and then go around complaining these brands are not good.

The average Johnny is now driving a Civic, an Audi or a Wagon R instead of a Pryass, a Corolla, a Bulto or a Kwid. So what do u prefer? Average johnnies with Audis and Civics or average johnnies with Marutis and Axios?

Personally I would prefer having Mr. John Bass from Wattala area to be a key decision maker because, he once claimed 'you should have sufficient qualifications buy a car'. That's the only way you can keep average johnnies off the road :D
