It's possible you have had a leak in your a/c system by your discription. and the compressor is not working as a result.

Start diagnosys by taking the car to an a/c workshop to do a pressure test to confirm .

Before you suspect a gas leak ensure that the AC clutch engages when the AC is turned on. Keep an eye on the AC compressor pulley. When the clutch engages the triangular shaped plate on the front of the pulley should rotate along with the pulley. If it does not engage it can be AC relay or the switch. However, when the gas pressure is below a certain point the compressor is protected by a AC pressure switch which cuts off the AC clutch. This is another possibility.
