Hi

To me it looks like gearbox pressure isn't enough during cold start.. It takes time to build up the pressure inside the gearbox..

However when was the last time you changed the gearbox oil? how much have u done after changing oil (if u did change the oil) and whats the ODO meter reading now?

If you haven't change oil, then i would prefer changing the oil and see whether you face similar issue.. If it does then its time for you to go for a gearbox overhaul or replace with a recon

Cheers

Hey

Rather than looking for a gearbox replace, try changing the gearbox oil with a recommended brand for ur specific model.. Um not quite sure about the price as it may differ.. But i hope it should be not more than 10,000 .. please do check with the agents / or someone who uses the same model.

May I know the Year of manufacture of ur car? Is it a CVT gearbox or conventional gearbox?

If yours is a conventional gearbox, cost should be less... If its a CVT gearbox then oil cost should be somewhere within the budget i've mentioned..

exact same issue was experienced in YOM 2001 Nissan Cefiro that belonged to a relative - the car was maintained poorly and the issue was fixed after replacing the transmission oil..apparently there had been some build up due to transmission oil not being changed for years.

Then the first step is to change the gearbox oil with manufacture recommended one and observe whether it will resolve your current issue

As others have pointed out above regardless of the cost the most sensible thing to do first is to change ATF (with Nissan Matic-D ATF fluid, I guess). While at the ATF change make sure you get the bottom pan removed and cleaned up of any residue and also the ATF filter(screen) changed.

Hi Rumesh,

Is ATF change through a machine for that old car recommended?

Thanks

Changing oil via machine will cost more as it will require more liquid.. Still there is a tendency of some residue to be left.. either way not quite sure whether it will make a huge impact.. Isn't it @Rumesh88 ?

Most economical, safest and almost complete way to replace ATF is to first drain through the drain plug. Then remove the pan, clean it, replace screen, fix the pan back and fill with fresh ATF. Pull out the ATF return line from the cooler (connect a clear hose to extend the line for better visibility), start the engine and keep on adding ATF to replace the fluid drained through the cooler return line. You need to keep pace with the ATF pump to avoid transmission from running dry but it is not too difficult. Once you notice fresh liquid out through the return line stop the engine, reconnect the cooler line and adjust the fluid level as required with the engine running at its working temperature. You should end up filling ATF close (1/2L more or less) to the specified capacity of the transmission.

Hmmm.. that's too bad.. Where do you live machan ? i think now the best thing is to show this to a mech or gearbox specialists like Nilwala motors and get their opinion..
