Porsche cayenne - Hybrid

peugeot407

Question

Guys, I need your help on deciding to buy a Porsche cayenne  - Hybrid  2012.

  1. How is the hybrid system holding up with our local conditions?
  2. How good is the agent support?
  3. Any independent service providers ( V***wa motors for VW/Audi... )?
  4. Cost of maintenance compared to other European makes?

This is what I found doing my own research.

  • Hybrid system in Porsche is comparatively reliable in our local conditions. In fact agent has never replaced a hybrid related component in Sri Lanka.
  • Extended warranty up to 10 years is available with agents  (240K per year).
  • Most of the service components are shared with other VW family vehicles ( Audi Q7/ VW Toureg). Thus service items could be locally sourced.
  • Brake and suspension components are unique for Porsche and have to sourced from the local agent.
  • Since the Hybrid version is very uncommon in the UK ( in fact TDI version is more fuel efficient and cheaper in UK market) will face a difficulty in importing used spare parts.

This is not directly related to Porsche but VW.

I own a VW Transporter and bring down spare parts directly from Germany whenever is necessary. The agent costs in general 2-3 times as much as direct import. For example clutch kit + flywheel costs around 400000 from the agent whereas I brought  them down for only 80000.

The independent workshop that you mentioned use Chinese no-name parts sometimes which I don't like. Plus they messed up with my vehicle even though the charge was quite high.

If you own a vehicle from VW group you should own their Elsawin and Etka software. That way you can get yourself familiar with components of your car and related repairs. Actually I do most of repairs on my vehicle by myself now. This is the final outcome of being ripped off by all major workshops out there!

How do you directly import parts from Germany? I tried E-bay but most of the time parts are cheaper at the company when shipping cost is considered.

I used to visit Germany quite often. On an emergency I get a friend to ship them here.

A lot of sellers on U.K. eBay are willing to ship directly here. But parts are more abundant on German eBay (and other places ).

Actually ever since I manage to source parts at a price cheaper than Toyota parts of a comparable model.

Hope you have deep pockets.

Things go wrong with age. Most of them near completion of the warranty.

Best is to check with the agent they have a comprehensive test which is not expensive.

Macan would be a better bet if you want a Porsche.

The thing about German cars is they need attention. Always fix properly with the original parts and never skip service intervals, and you won't be let down. So maintenance history is important. Otherwise just forget it and go for a jap or Korean shoebox which gets you from A to B.

How deep should the pockets be.

Can it be maintained for a price close to a jag xf, 520 or A6.

What are the main issues to look out for.

Are there indipendant mechanics or any place to maintain it.

Could parts be sourced in the net.

And anything else i should know beforehand

The fact that you are concerned about the maintenance cost and looking at independent garages is a giveaway that it’s a financial mistake,

for expensive motors like these expect at least 1.5 times average Late model merc ownership costs, let alone repairs. At least 1mil, in maintenance a year, given u run liberally, with just maintenance, NO REPAIRS
besides people are running away from aquas with hybrid batteries why would u want to be stuck with a pointless hybrid from an exotic manufacturer with deficient support just because they came in cheap through a loophole and now they are cheap for the obvious. Don’t board a sinking ship mate.

Jag Xf; I’d except it to be more troublesome but the Audi A6 and BMW 520d are fairly cheap to maintain cars, and with almost no issues,

like I said a hybrid cayenne will be heaps more expensive to maintain than the above. If you like the exotic market, if looks aren’t a problem, and IF RUNNING COSTS ARE IMMATERIAL then go for it. Don’t attempt it even with a 6 figure Sum set in your head for maintenance And repairs, it will disappoint you.

It will not be a daily runner.

A weekend car with some occasional long trips.

So would do 5000km per year.

Which means it wouldnt cost much for periodic maintenance right?

You will need to do an annual service irrespective of mileage (20K km or 1 year) depending on age and total mileage cost of this would be Rs. 60-100K. Ok for a premium Euro for a year. Average Toyota / Honda could cost same for 1 year / 20K km (4 services)

If you opt for the hybrid you could have issues with the generator and battery both will cost millions of rupees to put right. There are no used parts and even if you get them down you will need to reprogram the ECU for the new part and I cant think of anyone who will be able to handles this.

On plus side you can get a extended warranty for a fee up to 10 years. Most of the cars have this and if you get a 2013-14 you could have 3-4  years of peace of mind. Good luck after warranty expires.

There could be few vehicles where these were repaired recently which could be a plus as they could last may be for another 3-4 years.

Generally these cars were brought by enthusiasts and only few by rich/ politico morons  find a car from the 1st category you will be safe.

Generally they are reliable compared to other Euros and wear and tare is much better, when it comes to trim, leather seats etc..

Majority are low mileage less than 5K km annually and mostly parked inside day/ night.

There are few specimens around, suggest you get in touch with the agent as they will be able to help you out.

well at the end of the day its your money but as others have advised you if you are so concerned about maintenance and hardly run it why bother with an exotic hybrid? Ever considered an X5 M Sport or Audi Q5 or Q7? Plenty of specialists to keep those in top nick and spare parts available plus it should be less painful to own in the long term and even easier to sell off when the time comes.

hi :)... Just my 2 cents here...... I have owned 2 euro cars so far and these are my general comments.

Generally if the electronics in these cars give way... there will be a lot of problems..

The rubber components also get hard, brittle  and break due to the SL weather.

Things like roof upholstery may start to sag... infotainment screen may burn out.

Sensors start to malfunction.

u might spend more time in the garage than on the road.

Trained personnel are extremely difficult to find. The worst thing is even if the previous owner maintained these cars to the best of his ability these problems will occur.

Used euro cars can be a headache and I have had some bad experiences ....but the driving experience is amazing! I hope this one is good tho.. waiting to see what you decide.
