Chinese Stereo Headunits

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I need your advice on chinese stereo headunits especially in getting it shipped to Sri Lanka.

I have found a chinese brand joying which specialises android based system and their products good reviews on youtube and amazon. The seller is very accomodating will assist with getting the right type headunit for my car and is also willing to ship it stating that it is a gift. I can either choose DHL or EMS for shipping.

My concern is once it arrives in SL, would it held by customs?

if so, would anyone have any idea about the duty for these products and what sort of additional documents that i would need to submit to clear it?

Probably yes If the package is heavy and/or big.

DHL/FedEx/TNT will pay taxes for you and you have to pay them when you're receiving it.

If you choose EMS, or normal/Rgstd post, you have to go to the central mail exchange (if it's held at customs) at DR Wijewardhena rd and pay taxes personally.

You can findout tax percentage from Customs web or call DHL and tell them about your intentions, they'll tell you approximate tax amount based on value of the item.

Usually the customs officer will just ask you about the value and no docs will be necessary. My experience is that if the customs are very relaxed if they sense that the item is for your personal use and not for business.

Good luck.

If you want good quality sound,.. Look elsewhere and FM reception is at best right under the tower.:(

Basically, you get what you paid for.And yes, there maybe exceptions but you can't test before you buy apart from the above mentioned hiccups.

If you want to buy Chinese buy locally after experiencing the quality, if you buy from a local you may get a reasonable warranty too. Might be worth few extra Rs.

Ask the seller if he can use the Global Shipping program. That way you pay all the fees including customs clearance at once to DHL, and they will deliver the package to your doorstep. I've used it twice thus far with camera equipment.

@terrabytetango global shipping program is for sellers from US and Europe. Not for sellers from China

@Djin if you are buying from ebay or aliexpress, ask them to send thru EMS or ordinary post. Its cheaper and don't worry about Post office customs people. They will charge u a reasonable sum (in most cases, less than 1000 bucks). I bring down many personal stuff through ordinary post, from car parts, tech gadgets, books, household electronics and I even got a chandelier (in a 4ft x 4ft x 2ft box some time ago. I have never had a single bad experience with post office or customs.

During my visits to Central Mail Exchange, I have seen cases when importers were treated badly by customs. In ALL those cases, they had imported stuff which were questionable. For example, one guy imported a dozen 5kg tins of whey protein and claimed that it was for a patient dying from cancer. Another guy had things hidden inside things. Another guy had imported a boxload of LED Drivers. If you do that, expect to be screwed nicely. The post office customs guys can smell a rat a mile away.

If you import something for personal use, don't worry.

There was also one more pleasant experience I had with SL Post. I brought down a wristwatch last year and during transit, the box that carried the watch had got damaged. The post office in SL had resealed the box in a polythene bag and sealing wax. Also had left a note saying the package was recieved damaged. I asked the postman about the note and he said that's needed if I am planning to claim insurance for the damaged package (which I used to make a claim from eBay).

Agreed with @Croswind.

Have imported various stuff (electronics, car spares, gadgets, watches etc) over EMS in the past, and whenever I had to go to the Central Mail Exchange, I was treated with dignity and respect. Politely explain why you have imported the item, and most of the time they will let you go with very little tax charge (I once paid no duty whatsoever on some plastic cladding after explaining to the customs guy that they were impossible to source locally - which is probably not entirely true - but they looked odd enough to be considered a rarity).

Apart from being the more expensive, I felt that DHL and Aramex pay a bit more when it comes to taxes (which you have to pay back to the courier). I've used DHL and Aramex on many occasions when the seller would not post directly to SL, ruling out regular post. Every single item shipped via DHL and Aramex got taxed and in the case of DHL carrying some suspension parts, were about to get taxed HEAVILY.

On the other hand, via regular post, most packages were delivered to my doorsteps without a single rupee of tax. Some were reasonably heavy and/or medium sized boxes carrying things like motorcycle headlights and other car parts. The rare occasions I had to go to Central Post, my experience was similar to Crosswind's and Kirala2's. Be honest about it and if they see that you're just bringing this for your personal use, you'll pay a very reasonable amount and be on your way.

On a bit different title

Now they have this plethora of Chinese dvd players ranging between 12000 to 17000 with all the usual bits .

Any idea if they last a reasonable time?

Seems pointless to spend for a premium kit as it is never used,

In dire need of a reverse camera to save my wife from scarring everything in my lawn and garage

Ideas?

I haven't heard of any incident of them dieing prematurely however I heard that if those Chinese set ups are exposed to sunlight often the display gets shot. Also if you are looking for proper sound quality these aren't the stuff for you.

If you don't require tons of features you can pickup a used 6.5 inch JDM set up for that price, it will have reverse camera input.

Please do guide me to a place in Kandy where I can find a JDM one. The DIN size is a bit weird though.

That looks like Toyota's 7 inch/200mm.

The 7 inch set ups fetch for a slightly higher as they are a direct fit and look nicer. You can still fix a 6.5 as well using plastic fillers on both sides.

Shiffer recently bought a used JDM set up from Gatambe. I'm not sure from which shop though.

Some used spare parts shops have a stock of Japanese head units as well.

Alpine and Carrozzeria are the top of the range ones and are bit hard to find
