Elantra gen 4

Kris

Recommended Posts

Hi all, this is my first time on auto lanka. I have been following the forum for few months now, and it is a great work you do. I want to know some information of elantra gen4 (year 2008 - 2010) such as

Fuel efficiency

Market price

Any known issues

Although I searched thought the forum was not able to find much information on the specific model.

Thanks in advance.

Elantra has a 1600CC engine, which was the same engine in my former ride, a Kia Cerato. It did about 8-9 km per litre in Colombo. Did a bit better (around 10) during long runs.

Market price should be around 3.5-4.0 mill for a 2010 or so Elantra.

The Kia Cerato I had was rented out and it was totally abused by the renters. Did around 100000km in just 3 years. Absolutely no issues. It did have a blown head gasket due to a water leak (which happened when the car was rented out). As an added bonus, it has a timing chain engine so you don't need to worry about changing t-belts.

Another bonus is that you can get parts from Hyundai Lanka and Kia Lanka both, wherever it is cheaper.

Guess you've not seen the transmission failures of local Korean cars, and they're less efficient when compared with their Jap cousins,.

Sorry to have burst your"bubble"C

There are issues that even the local agent can't fix.

True, but, for example from personal experience, you can get a used one imported from Korea for Rs. 70k for a 2002 Getz. It was a Mitsubishi A4AF3 tranny.

I myself had a transmission failure. The cause of it was monkeys at auto m*raj pouring in CVT oil instead of normal auto gear oil so I know about this problem inside out. The repair cost me 30k and Chandana (Nilwala Motors) took just 4 days for the repair.

and have you heard of transmission failures in 2016, 2015, 2014 allions and premios and axios?

What are the issues tht the local agent can't fix, can you name one?

I ask this question because I owned a Cerato, which was given out as a rent-a-car and abused and beaten every day for 3 1/2 years.

Hi Kris, I don't have a lot of seat time in the elantra gen4 (2006-2010) but I have rented the Fifth generation (2011–2015) a couple of times and I've found its surprisingly unstable at high speeds (anything over around 100kmph) even at lower speeds (around 60kmph and above) its quite fidgety under heavy braking which makes it difficult to drive with any level of confidence in bad weather. I've rented multiple cars and found the above to be true each time, which leads me to believe that its something inherent in the chassis setup or vehicle design, that causes this instability.

So in short: If you drive extensively on the highway and / or like me, don't have any advanced driving skills, this may not be the best car to drive. Please note, my experience is limited to the 5th gen Elantra so the issues I've highlighted may not be a concern on the Elantra gen4 but just to make sure; I'd suggest test driving the car extensively before buying it and I would suggest driving it on the highway as well before making up your mind.

All the best with your purchase!

+++++There was a guy who was quoted nearly a million from TL for a replacement Toyota CVT  (AL threads)

Most all agents get one part as a service item,.. The entire transmission.:D

Classic example.  BMW. Their auto trannies are made by another company,..and no dealer or user service items are there than a complete unit. so if there is a prob with a trans, they just replace it. it's not being able to fix the prob but the owner getting a a heart-attak upon seeing the estimate,..

I recall back in the 90's almost all car dealers in SL were not allowed to import auto trans equipped vehicles by the manufacturers.  Reasons sighted as " Incompatible local operating conditions" ( You may have been too young to remember.)

I'm happy to see that a few independent specialists have popped up for auto boxes in the island .  When it comes to failures even a manual was also seen in the threads,..It all boils down to usage Maintenance, or the lack of it.

Before asking some one to get a brain to use your own to start with. the original comments made were to help the writer of the thread to make an informed decision.and not to throw the poor guy's finances down the drain,.. I'm sure if we could afford it, We'll all drive something better.-_-

This is why the local auto industry is what it is.we don't even know how to maintain a car, let alone make one.

Hey Kavvz,

Thanks for your insights... I'm so far to hear any good of this car :), making me believe my decision to consider this vehicle is wrong. Can anyone let me know what is the best buy for 2 Mil. It should be automatic transmission since my wife would be using it.

Now let's see.

I have used the Kia version of the exact same car OP wanted to know about. It's got the same engine, the same transmission, same electronics and based on the same platform. Plus, my car was abused for 100,000km, was misused to cause a blown head gasket and warped gearbox wheels. And I've spent something like 50k to solve both problems.and I gave my opinion about the car based on the above experience.

You, on the other hand, didn't mention exactly what was the problem that you claimed the agent can't fix. You mentioned about transmission problems (probably through hearsay) and it didn't sound like you have even sat on a 4th gen Elantra, let alone own one. and finally you talked about history of auto gears yada yada...

and then you claim you are helping OP to make an informed decision.

Now tell me exactly why I shouldn't ask you to get a brain?

Hi Kris,

I'm not saying this car is a bad choice. I'm just saying that you should test drive it extensively before buying as it maybe unstable at high speeds based on my personal experience with the Elantra Gen5. I've driven the Elantra gen5 quite a bit and I would not recommend that car for your wife.

By the sounds of it, fellow member 'Crosswind' has a lot of experience with a similar model (the Kia version of this which is the same car but with a more upscale interior to it) so I would not rule it out entirely.

However I'd like to help out in any way I can, especially since the car is for your wife. Based on my ownership history / driving history, I can recommend three cars that would work well for your wife in order of my preference:

1. The Mazda 3- First gen 2003-2009, we had a 2009 or 2008 I think in the family) but any of the models are excellent. I've rented this car a number of times and found them very nice to drive around town as well as on the highway. The Mazda3  is very stable at high speeds and on the highway has the cruising comfort of a car that would be in a more expensive price range. Overall its very good value for money I feel. However, before buying one do check for any signs of rust as well as the radiator and thermostat as its comparatively quite costly to replace the thermostat on this model due to the way the engine compartment is arranged.)

2, The Mazda 6 -First Gen (2002–2008, we had a 2006) Again an excellent driver's car, and very safe and predictable to drive. I really liked having this car around. I ranked the Mazda3 over this car solely due to the fact that I believe the Mazda3 offers better value for money. Either of these cars would be an excellent buy. However do check for rust under the car along the rocker panels during your pre-purchase inspection.

3. The Nissan Tiida First Gen (2004–2012)- I had a preface lift 2006 version I think as a long term rental (6 months or so) and found it to be a safe and convenient car to drive and have about the house. Even though this car is an entry level economy car, it was quite stable at high speeds and I was able to drive it confidently in bad weather unlike the Elantra gen5. It was however in my experience at least, lacking in driver experience and was quite an uninspiring car to drive largely due to the CVT gearbox it was equipped with. That being said, if you are looking for a safe economical car to have about the house for your wife, this car would fit the bill nicely.

Kavvz, Thanks, was looking for something for 2 million. I believe these options that you have mentioned are over my budget.

Slightly over budget yes, but these are what comes to mind in that price range. Sorry but I can't think of anything with front and side airbags, ABS etc that I could recommend other than the ones listed.

As mentioned I'm a crappy driver so am a big proponent of cars that drive well and are also safe. Unfortunately the ones listed are the ones that I can personally recommend for your wife around that price point. Other members with more knowledge / experience may be able to help you out better with suggestions and I invite them to post below with out fear of taking this thread off-topic; as really this thread is as much about you buying a suitable car within budget for your wife and keeping her safe, as it is about soliciting advice with reference to the Elantra Gen4

Kris: ( I've got no idea on the condition of this car, I'm just posting as the topic is about a safe car for your wife)

How about this one? http://www.autolanka.com/view/mazda/3/31794.html

^^ Its only 200k over your budget and maybe you'd be able to negotiate it down a tad further?  Either way based on my experience its a nice safe (and sporty) car to have about the house and in my opinion at least, a much better option than the Elantra Gen4...

that price was too good to be true for a 2007 car ... guess what it is :D

" show room condition, servise have done ontime records avalable hand 2200000,53000*39 finance "

btw @Kris  if your budget is 2 Mill even   elantra gen4 (year 2008 - 2010) is out of range.

lol !!! No wonder! Also why on earth would you pay 53k*39 for a total of 1.9 mil odd + the initial 2.2 mil when you can buy a similar Mazda 3 for 3.2mil or so?

(If people are falling for those kinds of mad offers, I might as well jump in on that band wagon too! So, here, if anyone is looking to buy a nice, somewhat gently used Nissan, that is sometimes maintained at the agents and often parked inside with original from the abroad mud-stains, I have one for sale at 2.2 mil also :D

Nissan Teana with original mud-stains from the abroad! The previous owner left a can opener with toolkit and I can include that as well for its also from the abroad. Its a steal of a deal at 2.2 mil and....some other financing fine print we don't need to highlight.... can also include TWO remotes with the offer. You in? :D
