Nissan Note Hybrid

2016 Nissan Note Hybrid, kind of hybrid and ev. Here the e-POWER system features full electric-motor drive, meaning that the wheels are completely driven by the electric motor. The power from a high-output battery is delivered to the e-POWER’s compact powertrain comprised of a 1200cc gasoline engine, power generator, inverter, and a motor. In conventional hybrid systems, a low-output electric motor is mated to a petrol engine to drive the wheels when the battery is low (or when traveling at high speeds). However, in the e-POWER system, the petrol engine is not connected to the wheels; it simply charges the battery. And unlike a full EV, the power source originates from the engine and not just the battery . Moreover according to Japanese media this car does 37kmpl but not sure whether this car will import to Sri Lanka because SL car sale people are the trendsetters in SL auto market and they believe TOYOTA IS THE BEST LOL.

This vehicle is getting so popular in japan this year and this is the best selling car in Japan first quarter 2017. The system is bit like a diesel-electric locomotive. Claimed to be a fuel efficient car (37km/L) but can't see this car in SL market somehow why?

Well...it is doing well...so far in the top 10 rankings of cars sold but it is not getting that popular. You really can't base a car's success by quarterly sales figures in Japan. Usually whenever a new model gets launched that model becomes the best seller for the first few quarters. This happens mainly because people who are buying a car usually pre-order or wait until its release when a new model is about to be launched. So when the car actually gets launched all those pre-orders and the orders of people who waited start getting fulfilled over the first few quarters (this also creates a pretty long wait list..). Happens all the time in every category. Happened with the CHR, then the Camry, even the XTrail, then the Note was the best seller until the Aqua facelift was released...then the Aqua got kicked out of the top spot for the Fit facelift. A better figure would be the comparison of annual sales figures.

As for why its not brought to SL...probably because the car sales people don't know how it will be taxed ? So unless some guy is willing ot take the risk and order one I guess the carsales won't be taking the risk.

I've seen couple e-notes in SL car sales (actually in ######.lk site & i haven't driven any e-note therefore can't share anything real about this car like pickup, handling and level of comfort). However those car sales people quoted me 4.9mil -5.5mil for e-note. The biggest issue in Sri Lanka why this car is not getting popular, the local agent is not resourceful enough to handle its after sales services, not doing proper marketing campaign to promote brand nissan (same for Leaf, even today Nissan Motor Corp launched their next gen leaf but local agent has done nothing about new leaf in their social media sites) and settled down with Indian made crappy cars,

Well to be fair...agents usually focus only on the models destined for their own market. So they are not going to proactively promote and stock up on parts and expand their skills base for a car that they are not going to market themselves. Only instance they would do all this is if and when the market gets flooded by grey imports. Also, cars like the e-Note and even the new Serena and the New Leaf are quite complex to fix with all the automatic driver aides. So the agents need to invest a lot in training their staff (learning how to fix the Pro Pilot system and auto parking etc is not going to be a one day in a workshop kind of affair) which would not make economic sense to do if their isn't sufficient cars in the market or they themselves are planning on selling it (for example the X-Trail hybrid which they actually do support after they themselves started selling the car and quite a lot of grey imports started coming in).

For example....Mitsubishi launched the Eclipse cross over, UML is not going to start promoting it until the model is destined for the SL market. At first TL did not support the Prius or even the Allion/Premio and any parts that were needed had to be ordered 6-7 months in advance and even then they couldn't fix cars like the Prius. However when the market got flooded with the thing and even TL themselves brought down the car, then it made sense for them to invest in setting up the necessary support framework.

Agent should be able to anticipate, what things gonna be happened in the future  unless ended up like local nissan agent. The best example is nissan leaf. Just see how many Leafs sold during the period of 2014-2016 in Sri Lanka, but local agent was not proactively involved, they took more than 3years to adapt to EVs. Because of this lateness in providing after sales services though currently they are conducting multiple free vehicle checkup programs to attract leaf customers but nobody is going to their doorstep to do repairs, other garages and service centres were able to attract those customer by giving the best service. Low re-sale value for nissan leaf also happened in Sri Lanka due to the poor service of local agent because customers have a doubt when buying a leaf whether we have a proper responsible place to maintain our cars.(In fact due to hot climate lithium iron battery get degraded soon also a big issue behind poor resale value of Nissan Leaf). However local Toyota agent even they were not directly importing allion, vios, axio, vitz, prius, aqua they were promptly attained to repairs related to those cars. Knowing these scenarios, SL vehicle importers don't want to take the risk by putting themselves into troublesome situations because if the customers started yelling at them by saying "look there is no one to get repairs done for our cars, now you'll are responsible for that". As a result of that currently nissan is washed out from the local car market though they were able to become the best selling automaker in globally. Therefore including e-note, new tiida, quashqai and leaf wont import to SL in big numbers.

However in 2003-2010 nissan agent did their job brilliantly but now they are giving their 100% priority for cheap indian made hatchbacks. Currently customer awareness for e-note is also low, therefore we could only see these cars in our roads, if SL customers massively request local car importers to import this car only.

Issue with the Leaf was the price even with 5% tax importing a brand new would have cost over Rs. 4.0 Mn. where as the recondition was around Rs. 2.4-2.8 Mn. They wouldn't have sold that many to make any economic sense. High initial depreciation in Japan and UK with tax re-baits for EV made sense to import slightly used to SL rather than brand new.

Nissan would have also been reluctant to offer due to the car not adopted to our climatic conditions. This is evident in high deterioration of battery in Leaf in SL.

Some of your points I do agree with. The Nissan agent as an agent is not the most effective of agents..then again nor is the Mitsubishi agent. Toyota got their act together a bit because they suffered quite a lot in the past (like I said...when cars like the Prius, Allion/Premio started coming in Toyota could not support it). Like I also said....agents do not invest in these unless the market gets flooded with grey imports (giving them reasonable business sense to invest just to protect and support the brand) or the agent themselves want to introduce the car in the country (having to stand behind their product). Even without these a decent agent will support their brand, however, it will cost the car owners (now we all know how willing Sri Lankan car owners are when it comes to maintaining and fixing their cars).

An agent is definitely not going to promote a vehicle they are not going to sell just because it got launched in another region. Doing so will be perceived as the agent endorsing that particular model in the local market which open an ugly can of worms for them.

As to whether a car model gets introduced in a particular country; the decision is not entirely up to the agent of that country to make. It is up to the head/regional offices, who will send a technical team to assess the market and advice the agent as to what resources they would need and how much it will actually cost them...that is apart from assessing whether the model will be safely operational.

The agent anticipating what will happen in the future...hmmm...well that is not as easy as it sounds is it ? Hybrid technology has been in consistent development for the last decade. So has EVs...and just as that is evolving we are looking at FCVs. On top of that we are getting ICEs that are getting nearly as efficient as Hybrids. So the technology by itself is changing. FYI..whilst Nissan introduced their e-Power system in Japan sometime ago, it was only a few months ago (May or so ?) I think that Nissan Motors themselves decided that the e-Power system might be introduced outside of Japan. Then on top of that add the indecisive policies of the government....things get even more complicated to predict.

One might argue that if the car salesmen could predict why couldn't  the agents. Well...car salesmen didn't predict anything...they just quickly reacted to a trend. Hybrid taxes were cheap so they brought in Hybrids...EV taxes got cheap they started bringing in EVs. The agents unfortunately do not have the luxury of reacting so rapidly to "trends" because they do have to go through a proper chain of command and processes.

Then there is also what Kush stated about the price. Agents bring only brand new vehicles. Toyota and Nissan did try bringing in used cars from their dealer network in Japan; however with the certification and warranty requirements that they as agents were made to give by their parent companies, none of them succeeded in selling used cars.At the end of the day the public's mentality was that if they could buy a used Corolla for X LKR, why would they go to the agent and buy the same type of car for 300-500K more.

So yeah....its not just the agents...its a mixture of many things.

Back on topic...the e-Note probably is not doing that well because for that price point you get much better alternatives. Also, for the most part the average Nissan cars have not been that impressive the last few years and have felt seriously short of expectations.

Even in Japan the Nissan cars are not doing that well. The e-Note is doing well because of the whole "new model effect" and the X-Trail has been in the top 40 in sales rankings. The Leaf is no where near what was expected in terms of sales in Japan, the Serena with all the Pro Pilot and fancy gadgetry got a bit of attention but that has been dying down too. Nissan had the best selling luxury MPVs but that too is losing out to the Alphard/Vellfire. So yeah....its not an e-Note thing but more or less a Nissan thing.
