BMW E60 530i

If you're talking about a pre 2007 model with a M54B30, which is an extremely good engine IMHO, has the following common problems with age (which can be dealt with quite easily)

  • Cooling System failures (expansion tank/radiator/hoses/thermostat housing/water pump)
  • VANOS seals failing
  • Crank Case Ventilation (CCV) valve failing
  • Oil leaks (Oil Filter Housing Gasket, Valve cover gasket, Oil pan gasket, Rear Main Seal)
  • DISA valve failing

Do a search for them online. A lot of info!! With some preemptive maintenance, the engine at least is pretty reliable.

Good car, it has so much power it'll easily cruse at 200km/h all day!

As for economy, if you 're thinking about it, don't buy one.

Maintenance, I cannot recommend an independent place other than the agent. they recommend a service/inspection every  10.000km or one year.

Common issues, lack of maintenance/abuse+rough roads kill them.

The engines have been known to turn the engine oil into Marmite.(sludge)

Thanks @Twin Turbo & @c1nder for your valuable comments. I did some research on the internet also. Normally I don't think about fuel economy when buying and driving a car, but it's good to have an idea. ;)

Following car is for sale on ###### and it's 2003 model which I think some features in 2007 model are not there.

Any idea on this? Also I would like to know a comparison between 320D 2010/2011 and 530i E60.

Its against forum rules to link external sites. Fuel economy wise don't expect more than around 5 city and 8 out station. Never liked diesels much. More trouble than petrols and almost no resources online if ur a DIY'er.

Spot on my friends M54B25 does around 5-6 in the city and on the highway with cruise it does around 9-10.

check for one with full service history.

and regardless what TT has mentioned above there are many independent specialist other than the agents. Not sure why he had said so.

I Twin Turbo has bought into the idea the mechanics at dealerships know what they are doing as they have had official training.

This is what all dealerships like you to believe. But sadly it's more a case of monkeys with the official kit. I'm sure there are knowledgeable guys, but they earn very little money and the good guys go and set up shop on their own after a while.

Usually their electronic diagnosis systems are the best though the other popular specialist has similar equipment.

What is however not under debate is European cars are best handled by specialists. Frankly this is due to European cars not being as obvious to dismantle as the Japs and the specialists can do a job in 1/2 the time safely. I'd you want to take it to the dealer every time it's up to you. But I can assure you most jobs on a BMW can bhandleded by any competent mechanic.

I don't take mine to the dealership anymore in the UK after twice they tried to scam me with repairs that did not need to be done. I have found a well respected specialists who has done an excellent job and on the side the charges are also cheaper. That wasn't why I switched.

E60 is somewhat controversial BMW mainly due to radical design departure and even there was a bmw enthusiast petition to fire chief designer Chris Bangle at that time. The consensus is that LCI cars (post 2007) are much better in terms of reliability and the quality of materials used.

If I am correct there is not much E60's in the island and to find a good sample one for a reasonable price will be bit challenging. I have seen some E60 of 2003 advertised as much 6.0 million. You can get a 2011 F10 523i for around 7.7 mil and F10 is a much better car IMHO.

Yes there are places working on Beemers but would you trust your car with them?

Well we all known Milroy, there is apparently two new places in pelawatha and kohuwala that specialises in Beemers. And of course I believe gtam from ITMC is also capable of handling German cars.

To add to the list of things to lookout for, I think the fuel pump issue was also common in the e60
