Gear Shift Not Smooth - 2004 Civic Es8 Exi (1.5Cc)

manbes8

Question

HI all,

My 2004 honda civic ES8 (EXI -1.5 cc) car not shifts gears smoothly in 1-2. There is a gear shift is not smooth and then the car jumps a bit as the shift takes place. Sometimes this jump get feel really well (mostly first 15 minutes of driving) and later on its very low(Sometimes after that time it very smooth). There is moment it wont give the jump feel too.

Another thing i noticed, sometimes i need get the RPM in to 2500 ~ 3000 for 1-2 gear shifts. is it normal?

I need the help for this issue. I would like to know following things,

1. What is the reason for this issue?
2. Anything that I can do w/o taking the car into the shop.
3. Can I drive on this for a few days or do I need to get into the shop urgently?

Hi All,

I changed the ATF from the Stafford. After that also i had that small jumping issue once in while when i accelerating from idle. After 2 or 3 weeks car start to stop very silently in the Parking gear. So i did a engine tuneup. After that problem solved and all the noise came from the engine no-more coming. I feel acceleration is smoother than previously and gear shifts happens properly without any miss.

Thank you all.

I believe your comes with a normal automatic gear box (not CVT), and first thing is check when was the last time you changed your gear oil and if it has done more than 30-35k km's do a gear box oil change. Probably your oil must not be having the required thickness. If it doesnt work, you might need to show it to a good garage and get his opinion.

What's the current millage of yours?

However if you always face that you need to rev upto 3000 , then it could be a problem with your TPS as well ( but since yours isn't happening always, start with an oil change, that should sort out your problem)

And ya, better to get it checked and changed ASAP.

Hi all,

Thank you for the responses. I bought this car recently. I didn't know about when did last oil change. But i checked with Stafford then they said from their records last gear oil change from the 124K mileage. Now mileage around 131K. I didn't know that it was a full ATF change or fill it with the required balance amount.

I checked the gear oil level but it on the correct margin and i color also not black yet. This shift not smooth issue not happening every-time as i told earlier. Yesterday night and today morning i didn't feel it much. I think only two or three times i got that jump feel.

it could be an issue with the transmission specially when its cold. does it comes when the car is in working temperature as well ? or only during cold start?
