GoPro is a brand, so there is no 'generic' GoPro. They are generally referred to as action cameras, and in the last year the market has been flooded with go-pros as well as dozens of similar knock-offs.

I use a generic chinese made one I got off ebay for about 50usd. No big complaints on quality, and it comes in a metal cylindrical body so a lot more durable than a go-pro. Plus you cant beat the value for money..

There's 2 cons though.

1- angle; the go-pro ha sa recording angle of 170 degrees while this has only 120, so it's a narrower field of view.

2- No back screen; so no previews. Hence it takes a few trie dto get the position/angle right.

May I ask what you're buying it for? If you're gonna stick it at the end of a selfie stick and walk around with it, I say dont waste your money. Get a regular camera, you get better battery life, flexibility and to an photo quality.

Mine looks something like this:

Thanks.

Recently saw something recorded with one of which is square & comes with a water-proof casing too and the video was of very high quality. Just like taken with a professional one.

Yes, the idea is to use with Mono-pod / stick in crowded and confined area.

Thanks again.

I have a Hero 3. I bought it specifically to mount outside the vehicle and record away when offroad and to mount on a handlebar. It has a few neat built in features like time lapses and slow mo. And the wide angle does give an awesome look to the footage.

It is best used is as an action cam (obviously) and it WILL get annoying if you try to use it as an all-rounder. And while it does video great, it is not great with stills. Unless you plan to use the camera with possible water and/or other physical damage, you'd be better off with a point and shoot.

Been using my original GoPro Hero Here for quite a number of years, they can take quite a beating, I wrecked the casing recently on a karting run, but the camera still survived! I will echo the comments above, unless your not using it for the purpose action cams are intended for, you are better off with other options, then again, the new wave of gopro knock offs are good alternatives.

I have a xiaomi yi which I use mostly to capture stuff which involve water; rafting, abseiling, canyoning and general fooling about in beaches and pools. Sometimes I attach it to the car for type of footage Tharinda captured. It's cheap enough for you to not worry about losing it or damaging it. I love it for the value (the camera and the waterproof casing cost me less than $70) but the video quality (even at 1080/60P) is not the same as a Hero 3+ or a 4.

You can use almost all the the std gopro accessories with yi.

I use a Mobius. Quality is pretty good at 1080/30, and the best part is that it has separate video monitor pass through which is of lower resolution. Perfect for FPV applications, nearly everyone in our club uses them on their quads and planes.
