What Has Happened To Bmw 320D S?

Nishan.dj

Question

Guys,

Sometime back, I remember there were many 320Ds on the road. May be because of the permits and all. But nowadays It seems I hardly see one of them. Any idea what has happened? Any common issue or something? Appreciate if you can share something. :)

Thanks

When I was stalking car listings for a 46, the majority of the listings were for the diesels (compared to the Petrols). So I wouldn't say they have 'died off'. Considering the age and possible maintainance issues, quite a lot of them may be spending a lot of their days in garages.

which means, not worth to buy such cars in SL (Assuming garages means to repair) ?

Many Diesel BMW's of the 90s and early 2000's have been reported to have issues running on our local diesel. One of the main issues for E46's was the diesel pump failing, which was in the six figures to replace at a specialist. In addition to this E46's in general were a bit more finicky than the models preceding them electrics and suspension wise. Might have been a combination of the above that have lead to a decrease in numbers, but generally I see quite a few (often diesel) on the roads each day.

Can you use 2C turbo engine on tis car? Then it will be cheaper to maintain.

I do hope you are joking mate.

@Nishan I got the same adivce from esdeez and a few other members regarding diesels. I ended up buying a 318i and I'm still in the process of patching it up. Whether it's worth to buy or not depends on you I think. You definitely need to sacrifice a few weekends and dip into your pockets. For me, I'm still in the honeymoon phace and look past the time spent in the garage and have good time behind the wheel. It's definitely a fun drive and I thnk one of those cars that have aged really well aesthetically.

I don't think a BMW is the right car to buy if economy is the primary concern. There are plenty of other cars to buy for economy.

One buys a BMW for what they are as a whole car. If you gut it and dump a Toyota engine in it, you're no longer driving a BMW, which would defeat the whole point of buying a BMW.

BTW, it's not just the engine and tranny, pretty much everything else about them sell at a premium compared to a Jap so you won't be out of the woods even after an engine transplant.

Whats the point of buying a BMW if you want to take the engine out. Its an integral part of the engine. A Toyota Corolla with a 2C engine would be a lot cheaper to buy and to maintain.

To be quite honest, if you are concerned about cost of maintenance and running then European cars are probably not for you. In Sri Lanka people buy cars simply for brand prestige. Whatever rocks their boat I guess. But to understand why the BMW 3 series outsells every other car in its class in the UK, you need to drive one and understand. If you don't well then its not the car for you.

And it sounds a bit like you are on the wrong forum too :P I know you think you are being sensible and being honest, but this an automotive enthusiast forum and what you have suggested above is akin to somebody taking a pis on the great bho tree in Anuradhapura. :)

It is true that you can buy Toyota corolla with 2 C engine. But it is very common for srilankans to buy europaean cars and put diesel engine... There is a famous baas in waliweriay who modfies benz car for diesel running using 2C engine. So BMW also can be done.

people dont car what is inside the car if they have outside look and cheap running car.

So why not buy them cheap and put reliable engine and use?

My freind just buy BMW 300- car.. he is now removing engine to put in 2c turbo. I will put pictures once job is done. Good mechanic we know is doing the work. Engine, gear box and computer box all cost only 3 lakhs.

Assuming you try to say that people look only the look of a car;

It is not always correct. Some may do but most don't. Its true most fall in to brand loyalty and things like that but the original condition of the car is always valued.

You may alter what is inside but it will not give additional value to it unless it is a genuine job to enhance the performance of any part of the vehicle.

And most probably if you do such modification, hopefully you will keep the car forever.

You sir, are an idiot. If people can't afford to run European or any other non-japanese vehicles, then they should not buy them and stick to buying sensible Japanese cars leaving the interesting ones to people who will appreciate them and run them properly.

But putting Japanese diesel engine will not change value of car, it will be making it more attractive to more more car buyers who not worry about later engine problem. Europeean cars putting out too much smoke when racing becasue of bad engine. with japanese engine you dont get that problem. many BMWS also making lots of smoke

when japanese diesel engine inside, servicing also no problem. Only troubles with suspension bush and other parts, but good lathe shop can also fix many bush (Bush gahanawa)
