Cruise Control

mdinuth

Question

Hi,

I have an Axio Hybrid 2014 and I use highway most of the time. I felt, it would be really useful if I have cruise control option in my car to maintain constant speed in highway by releasing accelerator pedal. But unfortunately it didn't come with cruise control.

* Is there a way to plug cruise control unit for Axio Hybrid? Suggest me a place too.

I have seen some advertisements in ###### for cruise control units for Prius and Aqua. I tried to contact them and they said those units will not work with Axio Hybrid.

Thank you

Dinuth

Cruise control is something that comes best when factory fitted. I feel it isnt safe to fix an aftermarket device risking your safety for a few more km/L.

I too feel its not safe to fix after market cruise control system.

Also i don't believe cruise control could save more fuel than good control of right foot unless you are driving on a complete flat road. As per my experience cruise control unnecessarily shift gears and rev to keep up the speed you assigned when your car slow down slightly on a hill kind of place. If you are not using cruise you just control your right foot and let the car slow down a bit and pick up speed on flat again. (I mean just try to think of a practical scenario).

But cruise control is useful if you have a Diesel vehicle that is equipped with exhaust braking system. When you enable exhaust braking and go down hill you don't need to apply brakes and it will not turn off your cruise.

Anyways I personally don't use cruise on long trips because its so boring and i might even fall asleep.. :speechless-smiley-004:

BTW, bottom line is if your car is not equipped with cruise keep it as it is and don't fix after market cruise control system. Hope you have heard about the mysterious sudden acceleration accidents right? If you don't going a little away from cruise control towards sudden acceleration issues, certain cars are equipped with brake overriding mechanism where if by any chance if you get this issue your brakes are powerful enough to stop the car. For those automatic transmission vehicles does not have this feature you could simply put to neutral and apply brakes and do not pump the brakes for any reason because when your throttle is at full it will not give vacuum to your brakes.

Please correct me if i'm wrong..

When you bought a 2014 car didn't you want/check if Cruise control was there? :speechless-smiley-004:

Does your highest spec axio have cruise control? If so check if you got the dummy wiring on the same spot on your car & check with a specialist on Toyota and see if you could get a used cruise control stalk and fit it. Might need programming.

Cruise control can be retro fitted in Peugeot's by getting a used stalk and programming on Peugeot planet.

- I have Axio Hybrid G 2014 which doesn't have cruise control inbuilt. :sad-smiley-050: In vehicle customization also it was not available as I ordered the vehicle derectly from a factory order. I want cruise control option not to save fuel, for the ease of driving in highway only.

- I contacted Toyota Lanka for this and they said they don't do any modifications for vehicles.

- I have seen lot of videos in youtube in fixing cruise control units for older corollas also. There is a risk definitely in plugging 3rd party units which can crash your car. That's why I want a specialist or a good place which can help me on this.

In Sri Lankan high ways available at the moment, you will be on the road maximum for 2 hours, even if you are going all the way to Matara. I really don't think that is enough of a distance for cruise control to make a difference via fatigue.

I do a lot of motorway driving and only start to feel fatigue past the 2 hour mark, approaching 3. I usually just take a break. I have cruise control but rarely use it, as I feel that at time if i I didn't even have throttle control, I will slowly lose concentration and fall asleep particularly when driving by myself early morning. Motorways are rather boring to drive on. Mostly straight roads, not much traffic at that time and constant speed. I'm sure this is different to others but the fatigue argument still holds true methinks.

Also I would not trust a retro fitted cruise control system. The safety override is particularly important in an auto vehicle. In a manual you can always just press the clutch and brake if the throttle does not disengage when braking. Also newer systems are quite complicated. My system accelorates and brakes to maintain exact speed and the car is manual.

A suggestion,

Sell the Axio Hybrid

Buy a 4DR5 J44

Transfer rest of money to fixed deposit

Drive around 70km/h even in high way

LOL

This is doable in most premios, allions and prius as some of the grades of these vehicles came with cruise option (most of the time car came pre-wired and ecu firmware came with cruise option.). If the car is pre-wired, then it's matter of installing the cruise stalk with correct part numbers.

Edit

Checked the part catalog, non of the models came with cruise option for axio hybrid (NKE 165). Since this new axio is a b platform (belta platform) model, toyota might have moved these options to larger cars like camrys and premios. However Cruise option was available on previous Axio (141) models.

Thanks a lot for your reply. How to check whether it is pre-wired or not?

He's already answered your question. If it was never available as an option in the platform in question, it will probably not be wired for it either.

A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago. It was raining, though not excessively when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the Police Officer what had happened, he told her something that every driver should know -

NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON..

She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain....
But the Police Officer told her that if the cruise control is on, your car will begin to hydro-plane when the tires lose contact with the road, and your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. She told the Officer that was exactly what had occurred. The Officer said this warning should be listed, on the driver's seat sun-visor -

NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE ROAD IS WET OR ICY,
Along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed – but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the road is dry.

The only person the accident victim found who knew this, (besides the Officer), was a man who'd had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries..

NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.

Even if you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about it, it's still worth it. You may have saved a life.

The above statement is only half-true but nevertheless, its good not use cruise control on wet roads.

Cruise control DOES NOT make your car take off like an airplane. That's absolute bull. However, with the cruise control on, drivers tend to relax and when the conditions are bad, its always good to be in control yourself at all times.

Highly recommended dont use after market cruise control systems, and it will damage engine other than accidents due sudden acceleration

Wow, such misinformation, much bullshit. Do you know what Hydroplaning is? It's the phenomenon of the tire riding _on_ the water that is standing on the road surface rather than through it. This happens when the speed of the car exceeds the tires' capability to displace water around the contact patch. It will happen regardless of whether cruise control is used or not, if the vehicle is moving fast enough.

Or the thread depth is too shallow to disperse water to keep the rubber in contact with tarmac. I think what happens when Cruise control is on during wet times is that the driver instinct part is lost at the throttle control. Drivers feel when the car is losing control and reduce the throttle. That helps in overcoming aqua-planning. Same situation with using older tyres at the front if u happen to buy only 2 new tyres.

That still only happens with speed. If you drive slow enough, even bald tires will displace water. It's all about time vs displacement.
