I recommend SAS engineering for A/C repairs if one is around Nugegoda or Kohuwala.

In my experience they have never overcharged me after installing unnecessary parts nor have they messed up anything with any of my cars over the years, it has been almost a year after my last service and it still works like a charm.

I think they are far reasonable in price compared to most major names in the industry, and have been in operation well over 30 years in the same location in front of the Kohuwala cemetary entrance

First of all I must thank The Don for starting this thread. This thread will hopefully through time will be able to concentrate all the scattered information into the topic.

1. I have a Nissan March AK-12. I bought it in November last year. All this time the vehicles we have had were maintained by the company my father was working in. As the March was a personal acquisition I had to personally look into its maintenance and I did not have any previous experience to rely on. Through talking to people I found that there is this guy called Ravi Perera at No.595, Kandy Road, Bulugaha Junction, Kelaniya, just 1km after the Peliyagoda Flyover on the left hand side if your going to Kelaniya. Contact nos are . 0722-142143 and 0723-444444.

He specializes in Nissans and actually do not accept other brands of vehicles unless the person who owns the vehicle is a long standing customer, friend, relative etc.

His technical knowledge is very good especially as it is centered around one particular brand. Parts are cheap and his work is quality. Prices are very reasonable. The bottom line is that in my humble opinion if you have a Nissan he is the guy to go to for major repairs. Not knowing him much those days I have left my vehicle with all the documents and there has never been a scratch or anything out of place.

Cons.

As with any mechanic going to him has its slight flaws which if not pointed out I do not think would be a complete account of him. When you are good you will be stuck with so much of work sometimes more than you can handle. This is one disadvantage going to him. That is at one point of time he will be having so much of work. So you will have to give him two to three days maybe even a week to repair your vehicle unless it is a minor issue.

As I live in Mount Lavinia it is quite a hassle to go to Peliyagoda to fix every minor issue.

So my next question is are there any good garages that members could recommend me from the Mount Lavinia area to fix maybe minor issues that may crop up during the day to day running of a vehicle?

2. Headlight Cleaning

March Beatles are notorious for discoloration of their headlights. There was also water leaking into one of my headlights. Found a great place to do headlight cleaning and re-beading of headlights.

Randunu Head Light Cleaning - No.57/B, Papiliyana Road, Nadimala, Dehiwala. Contact Nos. 0776 273 477, 0714 255 322.

If you are looking for a repair/replace in following areas, I could recommend Eranga - who works in "Abiramy VTA Car Care Centre" @ Divulpitiya, Boralesgamuwa

- Any suspension related work, including.... ball-joints, rack-ends, brake hubs, brake caliper, hand-brake
- Engine related: timing belt change, water-pump, tappet cover

I have been working with him for 3 years for any above specific issues and always he nails it perfect. Also, good thing is he is very calm while doing his work. The vehicles I had him, Mitsubishi Lancer, Galant.

Engine tune up - Auto lovers, Gampola. 0779213155. Highly recommended for tune ups as I've done mine a year ago. Did a great job. Cleaned the MAF sensor, throttle body, spark plugs, inlet manifold, intake valves, fuel injectors & egr. It took almost 6 hours to do the job & it cost half the price wt they charge at Toyota Lanka for a tune up.

Repairs - Wasana Care, Welisara. A good place for all minor repairs. I've repaired my suspension systems & changed the engine mounts, spark plugs & check engine light issues. Very reasonable pricing with good work.

For those traveling on the Kandy-Colombo road and have problems with their ride near the Mawanella/Kadugannawa area (hope that doesn't happen):

There's this recently opened service center called Auto Kleen (can be found on Google maps) and they specialize mainly in Fuel system & diagnostics. They are very friendly, professional, have reasonable pricing and use quality products like Meguiars and Wurth when servicing the cars. They stock genuine Honda, Toyota, Suzuki & Mitsubishi service items & even document the work with pictures too. Went there for a fuel system tune up and they ran into a burnt out socket in the fuel pump and worked overtime until 9.30pm to get it solved. Two of the people working there drive a Honda Crossroad and a VW Jetta MK5 so that shows their enthusiasm. Also, Jayasiri spare parts, fuel station & the Suzuki A*W Agent is located a 100 meters right beside them.

For general repairs & basic service, I'll recommend Siripala Motors (0777075687) located in Uthuwankanda. He is also friendly and has reasonable pricing. But he isn't the best for hybrids and sophisticated vehicles.

Guys, Any recommendations for fuel/ignition system issues fixing around Kadawatha area? I am having a slight delayed start problem but not always. Checked the battery today and it was fine. So it could be something else. If you know any place to go for around Kadawatha area (or any good place you'd recommend), please let me know.

Location: Hapuarachchi Motors, Ruwan's Garage (Old Nawala Road, put into the road across from the Audi Dealership and take a right or use Google Maps)

Fixed: Engine Mounts + Timing Belt on a '98 Starlet

Price: 7995 for Timing Belt (7000 after discount when Ruwan got it down to his garage from T0y0ta Lanka). 18,500 for 3 Engine Mounts (15,500 after discounts delivered to Ruwan's place by AUT0KITZ) and 5,500 for two "Razers"/ Bearings for the Timing Belt (again delivered to his place from another place I cannot quite remember) + 2,500 Labor for all these things.

Time Consumed: Morning to Mid-Afternoon

Opinion: Ruwan is a very humble and great mechanic, he does everything by himself so prepare to spend some time. Many people show up throughout the day and I've observed him throughout his day and he refuses to take money on some things also and says stuff like "Apo oka podi deyak ne, Salli ganna puluwanda?" when changing spark plugs and etc. Since I was there since morning was offered a tea. Saw him refuse to put on a fake part because "I'll just be wasting my time fixing because it'll break in a few months". I felt like 2,500 was a steal to replace all three engine mounts and a timing belt. He also has some other guys who show up for certain other specialist stuff (There's a dedicated "electric guy", "AC guy" etc.) but bulk work is done by him. If you show up unannounced he'll drop whatever he's doing and check your car immediately (Good for a quick diagnosis on something).

highly recommended only if the person has time to spend with him since he does all the work by himself. Very reasonable prices for labor.

For A/C Repairs, I recommend Thinon Engineers, which is on D.M. Colombage Mawatha, just past Kottu Labs and the MAS Active building. Ask for Mr. Prasanna who is the owner. He's very friendly and has been in the business for ages. He charges around 10k to 13k for a complete A/C system service, and his work is solid.

For mechanical work on Japs and especially 4x4s, there's this place called R.D.S. Motors down the Pitakotte-Thalawathugoda road. They know what they're doing, but cost-wise sometimes tend to be on par with T0yota Lanka, St@fford, and AEmW

For Nissan March cars, there is some ex-AEmW guy who has his own shop somewhere in Borelasgamuwa. He specialises in March apparently.

Location: Sampath AC (The location isn't tagged online, next to MAS Active there is a cushion shop, take a left after the shop there should be some tiny boards, opposite to the Open University in Nawala), Phone Number = 072 445 2847

Fixed: Complete A/C Service + Change of Air Filter

Price: 6500 for the AC Service + 1400 for the Air Filter on a '98 Starlet

Time Consumed: About 4/5 hours?

Opinion: I first met Sampath at Hapuarachchi Motors, he's actually the go to guy of Ruwan's when fixing ACs. He fixes ACs there as well but he asked me to come to his shop in his house and I would recommend you do it there as well. He removed all the parts related to the AC (other than the Compressor unit itself, the blower etc I don't know the names of them all) and thoroughly cleaned all of it (my god some of them looked disgusting), he cleaned the air gate and added sponge lining to it because odours were leaking into the cabin, checked my radiator looking thingy which is related to my AC (I'm really sorry I'm bad with names) for leaks and checked the compressor condition by checking the pressures. Put in new gas (he claimed it was Nitrogen) and then cleaned the back of my cubby (where the blower was located and also had half the dust of the planet behind it). My AC went from 12* C to 4* C and ECON now cuts off at 7* C (it used to cut off at 12 initially, he claimed it was because of the dust). Also replaced the AC Filter. I've added some pictures for reference.

Hello all. I have crawled out from under my rock to humbly request your help. The Starlet's brakes are no longer sufficient for emergency stops, and the wheels do not lock up even if I stand on the pedal. Brake pad replacement did nothing. I believe it is time for new discs in the front. Could the AL alumni please point me in the right direction of getting this attended to? I don't mind paying more, as long as a solid job is done, without needing a revisit.

As always, your input is greatly appreciated.

terrabytetango,

I have forgotten  your name on the Al, because few years ago you was a regular writer to Al.

Can you give your vehicle model and year of manufacture. To my knowledge some did not have a brake booster.

Long years ago, I remember changing a bigger master cylinder then solved this problem.

I normally do not attend to any automobile mechanical repairs, still if a person contacts me then I study the replacements already done and attend them. Due to my other Automobile service.

To my knowledge this was a recurring problem on most Starlet's had.
