i dnt want 2 format it till i get my essential data off it n i reckon d only way is 2 jack d hard disk up to anothr PC but is dere any1 here who wud do it safely n cost effectivly??

U might have a problem jacking the HDD to a PC. I do belive they use different interfaces. Best is probably to move ur stuff over a network to a spare disk while u format. Assuming u have a network interface.

U wanna get this done professionally? "safely n cost effectivly?" Best bet is to get hold of a computer club, or some nerds. They love to do this sorta thing. I'd volunteer, but I don't have spare capacity.

Why don't you just buy an external hard drive (they're quite cheap now), hook it up to ur laptop, make it your boot drive (set it in the bios to external usb device) and install a fresh version of windows on it using a bootable cd. Then just transfer what you want to the external hd using your new win xp installation and reinstall xp on ur laptops local hd when u have enough space.

Hi Shaks,

Ironically I have one of those connectors which help you to plug a laptop HDD into a normal PC, but I am not in the country,

I do remember Datamaster selling that kind of stuff a few years back, so maybe if you get some free time you can pop in and ask,

But the simplest solution might be just to source a switched network cable, plug one end to your laptop the other to a pc with some space, run the network set up wizard in both PC's, share the hard disk of your laptop, access it from the desktop and copy the files you want over,

I am sure there are better experts in the forum who can advise you better though :)

Hi man, Hannibal here

Tell me:

1. is your primary partition is FAT32 or NTFS

2. Do you have more than one partition (e.g. do you have a D drive aside from the cd/dvd)

3. Do you save your data files on C drive or another drive?

Where are you located?

pls don't give it to someone who is clueless as they may mess it up and loose the data. U can't connect a laptop HDD direct to a PC but you can connect it via a small adapter

I'll help you if I can, will not charge anything.. I don't officially do hardware as a job (more a hobby) but I always help anyone I know :) If you can answer question 1 and 2 above then I should definitely be able to do something

cheers

Hannibal

mm. it seems a simple question to me, but u got many complicated answers. ok for my understanding what ur asking is that, u wants to backup all ur crap from ur laptop to another hard disk and then u wanna do ur OS reinstall. wats ur laptop, processor, memory and hard disk space. coz i dont find any issuse with XP SP2 or XP when it comes to reinstalling. give me a brif spec of it.

ok mate. do as i tell u if ur confident . :)

step 1.

try to find a PC that has more space to occupy all your data. (BACKUP) make sure to share the C: drive of the both C:\ drives (right click on the c:\ drive go and select share and security click on share)

step 2.

try finding a cross-over CAT5 cable and connect both laptop and the PC on the LAN connection (NIC) ( ask ur IT guy for a cable or if ur knowledgeable u can make a crossover cable using a CAT5 cable)

step 3.

go to network connections ( start - settings - network connections ) and select ur LAN connection. right click on the connection and go to properties. once ur there select the TCP/IP and click on properties and assign a IP address to both network connections ( PC and the Laptop ) both IP address should be on the same subnet mask. exp. IP= 192.168.1.5 mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.1.5 assign this to ur laptop. and once u have done that go to ur PC and start step 3 again. and assign IP 192.168.1.6 mask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.5

step 4.

try to do a " ping test from both computers " start - run - CMD press enter key. then type ping 192.168.1.6 ( dos command window )see if its replying. if u hav done as i mentioned u shouldn’t have any problems and u should see the reply from the other machine.

step 5.

go to start - run - and type the IP address of the laptop from the PC. \\192.168.1.5\c$ and enter. u should be able to connect and see the c:\ drive of ur laptop. if u are having a D:\ partition then type \\192.168.1.5\d$

now u can start copying all ur crap to the PC. it might prompt u for a password, then u have to enter the password to connect to ur laptop.

let me know if this answer is more complicated. i would be happy to assist u through the phone or if u have got internet access i would be able to make a remote connection easily.

wateva. let me know if u dont succeed, i will let u know a another alternative since u helped me on my car issue on the previous topic

cheers

ooops. sorry mate. i just read ur problem with ur laptop. ok wat i understud is that ur laptop aint coming up to windows login screen. is that right.

do this.

start the laptop , while its starting keep press the F8 key till it gives u many options screen and then select the safe mode to login to ur laptop.

this could help u mate. if u manage to login. try to uninstall ur anti virus application and other applications that u think no needed.. many applications could slow down ur laptop plus might hault initializing the windows login frame .DLL files.

i assume that ur registry is screwd up... that could be a reason. give a try n see. it should work mate.

drop me a message if it dnt work out...

i dnt think its a big issue its simple. ok how good are u in installing XP or Win 2000. if ur good in installing XP boot ur laptop from the XP CD and start installing. when ur installing use the 2nd option to wipe out only the windows or WINNT files on the OS and reinstall the OS without formatting ur C:\ drive then u will not lose any of ur data. but i cant gurantee u for ur favorites thatz saved on ur internet browser.

let me know if u can do it. if not drop me a message so that i can do a guide installation through the phone.

giv me ur comments...!!

Hi Guys,

This is my first reply in Autolanka forum. I have been visiting this site and reading the forum each and every day for more than a year but never put a reply. I just love this site, you guys are doing very well. Congratulations and All the best. Let me do a couple of lines about me.

I was living in UK for the last 5 years and returned to SL for good on the first week of January.

I am doing nothing at the moment, have a job in hand and start working on March.

Hi Shakir,

I can help you out man, I've got the connector as well. I can recover your data from your laptop harddrive and reinstall the OS also if you want. I'm not charging for it, yeah, we can meet up at Hilton Cafe one day but you should let me pay for the cheesecake

Do let me know sharks.

Take care guys!

Yes sharks,

What Nascar told is true, you can easily solve your problem in that way but, you must be careful man,

Just follow the steps what nascar told, but when you do the installation remember to double check the switches before you press them. Try it and let me know. Hope this will work out.

You can mail me on [email protected]

Take care.

if u have money goto unity plaza and get a hardisk external cover (mobile rack) to ur laptop hardisk. i assume that u dont have warranty for ur laptop so it is easy to remove the hard disk and fix that hardisk to the external casing and u can connect to another PC via usb cable its easy and backup it or format or anything

the casing 2.5inch i think for laptops.

i think probably know it

bye

hey there

From what you say you cant boot up

hey = see if you can boot into safe mode? if thats possible you might be able to use a network PCMCIA card to get the data off. Thats definitely preferrable to opening up laptop (try not to!)

If you can get to safe mode, you can plug in a network card, and copy your files, then format.

GOSH! just had an idea

if you have a Windows XP CD you might be able to reinstall windows XP and keep your existing files

if that fails, try the unity plaza external laptop hdd case idea.. thats gotta do it

keep me updated, tell me if it doesnt work out I'll try to find some time..

Thanks!
