Toyota Corolla Ke50 Parts

Hi guys,

I went ahead and got my hands on a corolla ke50 lift back. It came at the price I wanted so got it. Now I have to work out the quirks before get onto serious stuff. I was hoping some of you guys will be able to point me in the direction of spare parts dealers who stock parts for old corollas. Ad if you have any contacts of breaker yards.

Cheers,

Sampath

^^ what he said! Superb. And happy for you. Hope this thread eventually becomes your build update. Looking forward to it.

Might I recommend an auto electrician: Malinga auto Electricals in belanwila. He's experienced with classics, and fixed my rpm meter without a hitch. Neat work. Excellent chap. PM for his number if you want.

Congrats on the Buy, however the asking price on that car was extremely high, much more than what the seller bought it for just a few months previously. So I do hope you managed to negotiate it down to a sensible number.

We all know once we see something rare like this we suddenly start thinking too much with the heart and too little with the head.

Maybe you guys wouldnt mind sharing the initial asking price and the price it actually changed hands at... Not that i am planning on buying one, but knowing what one of these is worth might help future restorers get an idea on what they should be spending.

Edit: I dont think it should violate any forum rules. And we dont need names and addresses of owners

The car was up for sale for 300,000..advertised with pics of it parked roadside just laying around...

Someone (no name dropping) picked it up (I'm sorry I don't know the price at which it exchanged hands but more than likely at a lesser price than advertised )

This guy washed it, parked it in a more decent place and took more appealing pictures and advertised at 350,000. He also proceeded to snap at people who noticed what this guy was trying to pull.

about a month later, reposted at 275,000. And Sampath will tell (if he wishes to) at what price he finally picked it up for.

But as mentioned, the car has found a good home. Can't wait to see it all dolled up :)

Hey Guys,

The car was advertised for 300K in Gampola. It was with a car dealer. But since the car was in Gampola I wasnt able to go see. When I called that guy at time he told me he sold it for 260k.

Then I asked the new buyer to sell it to me with a little markup. But he wanted way too much money. Quoted 400k and the best I could bargain for was 350k. I was tempted to go see it and make a deal. But dropped it because I felt the price was high.

Then it surfaced again for 275k. And I finally got it for 225k. And no, I didnt buy it to turn around and sell and make a quick buck. Im thinking of making it a more of a daily runner. Currently its at a mechanic getting a bit of a cleanup, initial wiring sorted out because I need to get it to pass a smoke test to get the license renewed. As soon as it is renewed she will be transferred to my name and I will start the resto project.

The car's interior not good, its pretty shot actually. I can get the seats sorted out. But can a upholster also restore door boards etc? Do you guys know of any place where they break Corolla's? I wouldnt mind shopping for some interior bits and pieces.

All the best with the resto....just by simple visual comparison how inter changeable do you think the interior components would be with the more common sedan/wagon variants ? I kind of thought the dash layout and some of its paneling was different...

Good for you bro! Good that things worked out in your favour. Can we see some pics of the interior. I'm sure someone around here will be able to point out a compatible alternative if you show them what you're working with.

The door cards are nothing more than a sort of chip-board. I've seen people make new ones by using the old ones as a template and then draping it with a vinyl material of their choice. If I can dig up those threads I'll post them here. (supposing your original cards are still present) The only downside to making new ones is you'll lose the detailing trims and whatnot on the original. It'll just be smooth.
Please post some photos!

  • 3 weeks later...

I had a car for two weeks at a mechanic whom I used to go to get very small jobs done. But he ended up being a maka bass on the corolla. Seemed like he was approaching it trial and error, without a holistic plan. SO ended up considering it a sunk cost and getting it to Jaliya's mechanic.

SO the car has been sitting at his garage for a few days. The guys been sick and is finishing up a job in hand. So hopefully he will start on the rolla tomorrow.

Things to be done immediately:

- Sort out the suspension. replaced everything at the maka bass but its worse than it was before. Hopefully not much is left to do. What worries me is that the wheels hit the wheel wells at full turn and Im not sure if this is due to an impact or whether wrong tire sizes.

- Sort out the brakes. Replaced all bushes rings. But still brakes are non existent. Maybe the master pump also needs replacement. Will wait and see the mechanic's assessment.

- Sort out an oil leak from the engine. Hopefully its a easy to replace oil seal and I wont have to take apart the engine. I really dont want to take apart the engine now. Planning to rebuild or swap it later.

- Sort out the wiring. Seems like the wiring has been chopped and messed up. For now it seems to be the biggest issue to be sorted.

- Get rid of the fart box.

Secondary plans:

- Get the body work done. There is rust all around. But I really want to get done with the Escort before I start on this one.

- Restore the interior. Hopefully I will be able to find a few missing bits and pieces locally. Need to roam around panchi a bit.

- Rebuild or swap the engine.

- Get the AC sorted.

- Change the wheels.

That's about all I have planned for now. I guess more will come about once I start running it.

Are both front wheels hit the wheel well at full lock? If so, it's defa caused y a bigger tyre. you can use a pair of spacers till you swap out the wheels maybe?

if it's just one side that rubs, it's probably impact.

Did the maka baas muck around the suspension by any chance?

Yes, both wheels hit the well. But one more than the other. This was there from the time maka bass touched it. But he never even got close to sorting it out. Once he was done, the two wheels were going in two different directions. Bloody lazy bugger.

One thing I wanted to ask you guys, I am thinking of an engine swap on this one. I dont want to go for a newer one like the 4AGE, prefer something more sedate. What is a good engine that will slide in nicely without major mods? Currently it has a 3K motor. I think the safest is a 4K or a 5K. Want to have a carb engine to keep with the period of the car. But prefer something with larger displacement, maybe a 1500. Currently its a 1200.

Any pointers? Any places that I should go and see to find an engine?

A 5K would be the ticket for you. I don't know if any can be found here, but they were on the KE74s and petrol Lite Aces of the era. A 4AGE conversion would mean you'll have to source an A series 'pedal box' (don't know the technical word for it- it's what the Aussies call it!) and these are supposedly rare. The 4K is a great upgrade from the 3K and the 4K can be tuned to get more than the stock 71hp.

I believe the "pedal box" referred to in 4A-GE conversions is the housing for clutch and brake pedals where the clutch pedal has the required "hydraulic clutching???" components for a T50 transmission. Prices varies from..well on what you need actually....whether it maybe just the pedals and the housing..pedal housing+resevoir, etc....I don't know about rarity...but they are pretty pricey...

Correct iRage! I learned about these conversions on rollaclub and from what I gathered, the AE71 pedal box is very rare and expensive (when found).
