Project Capri

Hoonigan

Question

Hi all,

So I've been trying to find a Capri for some time now but haven't really been very successful.

I'm trying to do a resto-mod and I have a few very specific things I want to do to it. So an abandoned car that needs body work, paint, interior work etc fits the bill perfectly. I don't really care if it's running or not either.

The few I found were recently restored or 'modified' and asking prices were a bit on the high side and I would anyway have to roll back some of the work already done on them and this would make me overshoot my budget by a mile.

Basically, I'm looking for a Ford Capri (preferably MK1) in shabby condition for around 3-500K (not set in stone, maybe a bit more depending on the condition) If any of you gents know about one close to what I've mentioned above, please be kind enough to drop me a PM. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Thought I'd update the thread with what has been going on. While I have nothing to show as such, a few things have been happeing.

After the undercoating was completed, checking, testing and test fitting componenets have been going on. Seals, bearings and what not are being replaced where needed.

The front struts have also been converted with the coilover conversion kit and now have height adjustability. They have been mounted with a pair of new KYB oil shocks. Rear shocks are to be replaced with new ones as well.

Things slowed down due to a few unavoidable hurdles in the recent months but are now pushing to get the car into a paint booth by the end of the month. (fingers crossed) The engine is yet to be fired up which is the biggest worry I have now, with it's old injection system being a possible issue.

In other news, thanks to Sajiv and Sam, an article was done on the Capri on the new T&T issue. I'm waiting for the pics myself so it's just the link for now. You can download the mag for free from the link below.

So here’s a lesson to be learned; “Do your research before diving head first”

At the time of buying the engine, I thought that the Cologne 2.8 injection engine was running on the EFI system with an ECU and a handful of sensors and injectors as “regular” cars. Turns out I was pretty wrong.

The engine runs on a mechanical fuel injection system built by Bosch. Apparently it was widely used on a variety of manufacturers ranging from Mercs, VWs, Fords and Porsche. Me being the noob that I am, didn’t realize this until recently. But since it was apparently used quite extensively, I’m sure at least some of the more experienced forum members here would have come across this.

Nevertheless, for the benefit of who may like to know, the following diagram explains the basic operation of the system. The “Fuel metering head” is right in the middle of the intake manifold and the air filter. The draft of air drawn by the engine goes through the metering head and lifts a circular plate off its seat which is attached to an arm and a plunger which rides up and down a chamber revealing or closing a series of holes which determines the amount of fuel going to the injectors. The injectors are also mechanical and are basically spring loaded valves that open under fuel pressure. And they do not pulse like the EFI injectors and stay open as long as there is fuel pressure from the metering unit. Because of this, the system is known as “Continuous Injection System” or a “CIS” in the States.

Anyhow, I managed to dig up some manuals, wiring diagrams and troubleshooting guides online and finally Roy and the guys managed to fire the engine up. It is far from running smooth but it does run which is a relief :)

Supra_Natural was kind enough to point me towards the Megasquirt EFI systems and I did a bit of reading into it. Megasquirt sure sounds like a good option for a car which does not require emissions testing. The site extensively provides guidance on what to look for when sourcing injectors, throttle bodies and pretty much everything one would need to put together an EFI system from scratch. They manufacture a fully tunable ECU which can be purchased as kit that can be soldered on your own. This can be used to convert a carbureted engine to EFI or to improve on a factory EFI system.

Cool! :)

Trust Supra to find something called Megasquirt, sounds like a porn movie title.

Any updates on the bodywork?

LOL yeah it sounds dirtier than it is.

The spoiler is yet to be finished. The mock up done last time didn't look right to me so I asked for it to be slanted back a little. And then the car was hoisted back up so that was not completed. We will get test run the car and take it to his workshop to finish it off. There is a bit of surface rust forming here and there which is a bit worrying but we are trying to get some paint on pretty soon. Speaking of which, I spoke to Sarath (you may know him) last time I visited, who will be painting the car. His work seems pretty good to my eye. Any thoughts?

Hmm I do know a painter called Sarath but I'm not sure if he's attached to Roy.It's Ranga(tinker) I know well...Anyway yeah have a look at a few cars he has done.See if they have ripples and dull areas.More than the paint itself its the prep work that most painters get wrong.

It could well be the same Sarath as he is not attached to Roy. He has a paint shop closer to Kiribathgoda town. I went to the shop and the work in progress cars there seemed pretty good.

That's the guy..I've seen his work and it is indeed very good.My father knows him well and speaks highly of him too.

You in SL?...Drop by if you're passing Kiribathgoda.

It's been months and progress had been painfully slow. A long list of little things to do to get the car up and running fully before the test and the final tear-down for paint and final assembly.

While the E30 lights were the first plan, They seemed a bit disproportionate and we ended up with a set of smaller sealed beams. We adapted a bracket and has full adjust ability.

Exhaust is complete from headers to tail pipes, little bits of rust around window frames attended to, new radiator mounts fabricated and the radiator given a home, new brake lines went in all around. The read drums ended up staying on for the sole reason of getting things to move along. Will revisit the rear brakes after the car is out of the shop.

We finally figured out the right fuel pressure and now have to run an in-tank pump which needs to be adapted to the tank and plumbed.

And the spoiler, which was to take a matter of days to complete, is finally on.

I almost gave up on the ducktail Davy. Just want to wrap this up and get the car into a paint booth...Speaking of which I've listened to my gut and GTAm's advice and have decided on a a little bit more flashier colour. I know this isn't the first time I decided on a colour but I'm sure this time it will be final :)

I've also given my daily for a coat of paint to the shop I've been eyeing to do the Capri so I will have a first hand sample of their work this evening.

Hooray! I remember this conversation from the beginning of the project. Good move. :)

We have touchdown gents! The car is on it's own feet. They plumbed the water lines and aligned the radiator and the fan shroud. A few years of gunk stuck in the fuel system was also cleaned out including the mechanical injectors which apparently cured the engine of a bad idle. I heard that they kept it running for about an hour today...one of those days that the job really gets in the way of more important things!

There's an exhaust leak on one cylinder bank which needs to be looked at and hopefully we will have the car moved to Sarath's paint shop soon. Speaking of Sarath, he did a number on the Bimmer and I'm sold on his work.

Just to refresh your memory, here's how far we've come :) The picture really doesn't do enough justice to how meaty the rear tyres look (even though I say so myself)

Looking good machan, must be good to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Couple of things I noticed, First is there enough clearance for the front tires when the steering is on full lock? Based on this pic it looks like they might rub the arches even at a minimal lock angle... Also, you seem to have a hell of a lot of ground clearance, going to go lower?

Well things have slowed down every time I thought we're on the home stretch so won't count the chicks just yet :D

The front has just enough clearence from lock to lock. We made sure of it during the fabrication but yet to fully test it out....especially once the car is fully loaded and any height adjustments on the coilovers are done, which would answer your second question.

The rear leaves have been cambered as far as possible, I will have to use lowering blocks to reduce the wheel gap once the car is fully settled with the spare, rear seat and what not are loaded. The fronts will be lowered a bit with the coilovers. However, this would only solve the wheel gap and would leave some undesirable ground clearence. But I guess that's the price I will have to pay for the bigger wheels.
