Nope....still not a Halo car...a Halo car is a car that a manufacturer puts all its design and technological R&D efforts in to which subsequently trickles down in to the rest of the product line up. Like with Honda, the NSX was a halo car...all that R&D finally trickled down to their Civics and Accords and such. The Supra never did that. From the first gen to the Mark IV, the Supra what was used in other cars...predominantly the large and midsized sedans. In fact the 2JZ-GTE for which the Supra is venerated for never even went in to the Supra first...it went in to the Aristo. The first generation Supras were based on the Celica (Camry/Carina) platforms and even the Mark IV Supra was based on the Z30 Soarer platform (which was released in 1991 as opposed to the Mark IV's launch in 1993). So...it never was a HALO car. It was a flagship sports car...but not a halo car by definition. THe Supra was always based on already existing general technology.

Toyota never had a Halo car after the 2000GT. The GR Super Sport will be in sorts of a first after so many decades (not taking in to account the LFA here).

Fair enough you may have a point...

But does R&D always trickle down into everyday cars from the Halo cars? If that's the case my previous Teana, Sylphy & Versa were missing some major Nissan GTR parts / influence!! NISSAN OWES ME $'s !!! ?

Technology transfer/trickle down is not a direct transfer of parts. Halo cars are supposed to inspire the consumer and get them excited about the brand by showing the brand's design and technological capabilities and imagination and get people excited about buying the lower cars as they see little bits of the halo car in them.

Different components trickle down...specifically design cues and most often know how. Nissan is not the best of comparisons because Nissan was broke and pretty much got in to the habit of redesigning Renaults for its product lineup and replacing proper composite parts with plastic parts :D But if you think about it...there is a lot of know-how that transferred from building the GTR in to Nissan's own engines....it is not by some sheer luck that Nissan made the world's lightest most powerful 1.5L engine...nor that they have some of the nicest, crispiest and balanced Japanese V6 engines (albeit all connected to absolute shit gearboxes). In the older models....if it wasn't for the R32/33/34 GTRs do you really think cars like the Gloria/Cedric/Laurel/StageA would actually exist ? Cars that pretty much pushed their engines to the max as well that is well balanced (for its size) and has an amazing AWD system ? (which by the way was what smaller cars like the Sunny and the ATESSA systems were based on).

Honda is a better example....the new NSX...the design cues have moved down to their other models (the S660 looks like a baby NSX).

Lexus' LFA....a lot of the engine and transmission control, suspension know how have been transferred down to other Lexus and Toyota cars (like the funky suspension some new Corolla versions have which adjusts its hardness depending n the yaw of the engine...things like seat design are there as well. Even with the GR Super Sport which is pretty much the TS050, the high performance Hybrid power train system are moving down to other cars...(part of which is what is driving the LC300, Lexus LS, etc.. Hybrid systems). Work in their lightwork engines for the TS050 did effect the development of the worlds's most powerful 3 cylinder engine (for the GR Yaris...).

The Supra did nothing of that to the brand's lineup except get fans excited with power (which ironically in stock form the sedans had more or less the same of). Now if all those suspension systems (well..to be fair the Mk IV's suspension system was its own) and gearboxes and engines first went in to building the Supra and then went in to the Crown, Aristo, Chaser, etc...then yeah...it would be somewhat of a halo car....but it didn't (most fan boys do not necessarily know that...the JZ group chats are always interesting). So, obviously Toyota had no qualms about getting BMW to do up a model..it was not a halo. It was just a flagship car....

Flagship car : Typically the best and most insane car and the most important car that the manufacturer has...

Wow! What a read...I'll have to Google up some more backstory on that: Thanks @Gummybr

(The R390 sounds like it was pretty amazing: I didn't know Nissan had anything so badass! Also kinda funny that it was the transmission that was the weak point- if it can be called one...)

There was a one off Yamaha as well called the OX99. That was the time Japanese manufacturers went crazy.

On the topic of bonkers Japanese cars....Aspark showcased their Aspark OWL at a Tokyo Motorshow a few years ago...2017 I think ?

It was supposed to be a 1900 (or something-ish) horse-power EV Hpercar..claimed it did 0-100 in like 1.5 seconds or something...was planning to build..20 (or 50) each priced at 3.2MIL USD :) So yeah...there are still some crazy Japanese car makers out there..

That would have blown Tesla out of the Universe if they built it, but then again the price..... Yes there has always been bonkers cars by the Japanese like the Eliica a 8 wheel electric prototype. But sadly none of them saw the light of day. Also another forgotten car is the Nissan MID4 the first car to have the HICAS system and the predecessor to the ATTESTA 4w system

I found the MID4 GORGEOUS ! The NSX looked so much like it as well :)

As for the Owl...production was to be this year...no wonder what happened to it. As for the price tag....there are quite a few bonkers rich Japanese out there..so you never know.

Earlier today Nissan had yet another digital unveil for their Infiniti QX60 Monochrome concept. As with the Z, the QX60 concept is apparently a near to production concept. Again...there were more hints about the tech than what they had for the Z. So far it seems like the QX60 will most likely get a variant of the VC turbo V6 with a improved CVT and AWD system. Hmmm....
Now we in Asia do not get the QX60, however, the QX60 has been based on the Pathfiner platform...so this very well could signal the platform for the upcoming Pathfinder in this side of the world (albeit with more regionally appropriate engine choices).

Next Gen WRX ?
Traditionally (well since the LeVorg has been in existance), the Levorg has had the same front end (with some softer edges and such) as the Impreza. So I suppose we should not be surprised to find the next gen Impreza having the same face as the new LeVorg which is already out. In fact the wider scoop and some of the accents around the headlights sort of show that.

Sometimes I wonder whats happening at Nissan. I vaguely remember seeing a story mentioning that Infiniti will be dead in a couple of years time (I think it was part of the restructuring plan at Nissan). Whatever said and done Infiniti has moved away from Nissan from the design aspect. These new concepts look futuristic and much better than what Nissan designers have come up with.

  • 2 weeks later...

I havent watched BTCC for sometime (after the Primera glory days) but interestingly a Japanese make is again making its mark and its a 5 year old car that is no longer sold in UK.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motorsport/how-infiniti-salvaging-its-reputation-btcc

Question is what happened to them 5 years back when the car first put out, if with a little work it can trouble the new comers how good it must have been 5 years ago.

Next gen BRZ/86 teased ❤
The new BRZ/86 was teased at Subarufest in the US last weekend.
Not sure if this is a major refresh or the actual next gen....but probably is the latter as some of the articles also say the new model will be revealed this Fall and released in Spring 2022 (considering the current BRZ/86 production has ended and orders are not being taken...that is a long long wait)
Yeah...those wheels are straight out of the GR Yaris RZ120708090_10157266062586603_3340020479936953275_o.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=NseUUMkTpVYAX9feF1N&_nc_ht=scontent-itm1-1.xx&oh=1d21cbf359344cfe1edf08e925f5b640&oe=5FA2DAAC High Performance.

Lol. Funny meme! Yes, the MX-5 would be a more fitting candidate I guess, but on the brightside: Well at least its in something...

I'm just surprised they are reviving the rotary. (Didn't do so well in the Rx8 did it...?)

No unfortunately, I never did! ( It was a decision that was driven largely by limited finances as well as the unreliability of the RENESIS 13B-MSP engine, however that decision to this day remains one of my biggest regrets... )

Uhh...that article is a bit misleading....the MX-30 was unveiled at the Tokyo Motorshow last year...but went on sale only around June/July this year and then a few days ago they released the Hybrid.

Mazda was putting a lot of hope in it but sales have not been too great for the little crossover. Saw it at the motorshow and at dealerships...the design itself is nothing to write home about...looks like a CX-3/30 that got some body mods. The range is only 200km. Why ? Well because Mazda felt it was not necessary to have more than that..that was exactly what they said ! That this would be mostly for city use and anything more than that is not needed and that the larger batteries and and other equipment would make the car too expensive and production would cause too much pollution and anyone who wants more should go buy a CX-30 or a 5. Would have loved to test drive one but there are none around. Apparently everything from the sound to the accelerator pedal feel has been synthesized..and strangely feels nice.

As for the rotary...yeah..they have been working on it for sometime and claim that the new one is much more efficient than the old one. I guess they are betting on the fact that if the rotary is mated with some sort of electric assist system the overall range and emissions would favor them when calculating to see if it was eco friendly.

Sad thing is Mazda is not doing too well. The MX-30 has not created the huge bang they were expecting. The CX-30/3/5/8 are losing out big time to Toyota and Nissan. Their line up is self cannibalizing as well (why still have the CX-3 when the 30 is there ? and now with the MX-30 hybrids they will literally be kiling off the CX-30 market themselves. A new CX5 is needed but COVID ahs not favored Mazda...The 6 is no where in sight and the 3 is barely keeping up with the Corolla). A lot of hope is placed on the RWD next gen 6 and the RX-9 (if it ever happens)

Really? I wonder why its not selling? I really like the design, but then I've been a big fan of the CX-3 for a while now (the CX-30 is bigger right?) and the MX-30 looks like a great progression. As for the range limit to 200km- I totally agree with Mazda's logic, it doesn't make sense to build in all that range, there's too many negatives and little payback... Its like sticking a big ole V8 in there. Nice to have, but how many of the target market would pay extra for it or appreciate having it in there? Only one>> Me. :D

Aww... man. First Nissan, now Mazda too? Only BYD is doing well in this market huh? Crap. The future looks bleak!

"The 2021 Acura TLX Type S's 3.0-liter V-6 will make 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. That horsepower figure edges the Audi S4's 349, but falls shy of the BMW M340i's 382 horsepower."

Weird grill aside, the car looks pretty darn good. And anything that can hang with an S4 is a pretty  big deal I think...Impressive!
