Ford Escort Mk1 Restoration Project

I admit the car IS flawless, and it probably DID cost the owner around that number to do it up. But an enthusiast puts money into a project not because he can mark up the price when selling. He does it cos he's loving the restoration project. Another example, Komi's integra; If you sum the price of the base car and the upgrade parts/labour and put it up for sale, that car might not sell, but at the same time if you offer komi a 100+k on top of what he's spent, he probably wont take the offer either cos its more than a bag of cash to him.

But you certainly know more about these cars and their ownerships/prices; I still feel people who buy these 'ready-made' cars are depriving themselves of a very special experience. Different strokes for different folks...

I have to agree with Watchman.

The car looks a good purchase for somebody though, but some do say life is about the journey not the eventual destination :)

True about the journey. You tend to form an attachment when you restore a car yourself. However I would say the more practical and smarter thing to do is pay a premium for someone else' hard work, frustrations and corrected mistakes.

7.7 mil to be precise. That was not due to the crazy local market unlike overhyped Capris,Escorts,7s etc...TR3s go for about 30000 pounds in the UK so that price is about right especially considering the rarity in SL and that car is in the mintest of conditions.

As for Shane's Escort. That is one of the best restored cars I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few.The attention to detail is amazing,I remember he redid the entire paintwork because he didn't get the exact shade of grey he wanted.

Wow, that is most impressive... If the car was a minter then that still seems like a sensible price really... I didnt know the specifics just heard it as a story from my mechanic.

And yeah machan, Shane's car really needs to be seen and driven to be properly appreciated.. Without a doubt it's in my mind it's the best Escort in SL at the moment... When the Mexico gets restored that might change though lol.

Can anyone guide me to places in Sri Lanka which has British Ford parts? Any particular place in Panchikawatta or any used part importers who bring down these parts?

Thanks.

I spotted this MK1 at Pelawatte. Is this the same Mexico which was discussed in this forum? This was a mint body. couldn't get a closer pic.

No it isn't.. this is a normal two door escort done up as a mexico. Very well done though.

Mechanics can really take the steam off of a project. My mechanic has been missing for about 2 weeks now..

For an update, the swapping the carb, plug wires and repairing the fuel pump exposed another problem. Seems oil is leaking into the spark plugs and that kills the engine after driving it for a while. Well that was discovered about 2 weeks ago. So instead of taking apart the 1100 engine decided to build up the 1600 engine. Figured no point in putting money into a engine that I am going to chuck anyways. That's where the mechanic did his third disappearing act.

With the problem of not being able to move the car I cannot get it to a garage to get started on body wrk. But enough is enough. By hook or crook, ie. either by driving or towing it will get out of the garage this weekend. Im done with being mr. nice guy!

  • 2 weeks later...

So I gave up with the idea of running the car for a while before starting on the body work. Got in touch with a couple of tinkers who were recommended by friends. They seem to be busy. The earliest one can take my car is in another two weeks. And the other guy is booked for another 6 weeks.

For the moment the car is in limbo until the tinkers get free. And still no news from the mechanic to build the engine.

i guess I'm not the only one in a rut...I guess you have to allow enough time to get things going. After all, you can't exactly rush things along with cars like these. Better give it time and get the job done by the best tinker you can get hold of. Not like you want to patch things up later on.

Spent some time at the garage yesterday. ANd because I was there, we got around to dismantling my new engine. Took everything apart. So on Monday it will go to Lal & Nihal and also we will source new parts depending on the recommendation. Monday will be the day we will decide if we bore and put int over sized pistons or if we put in sleeves and use the same sized pistons. And hopefully be the end of the week the engine will go in the car.

I can see this month draining my bank account dry with both projects starting to move forward. And to make matters worse its school holidays.

On the hunt for pistons and rings. Seems they are not as freely available as I thought. :( Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm quite sure you can find matching rings if you aren't too worried about using a genuine Ford part or import high quality stuff. Piston rings are comodities. Good Jap ones are probably better made too.

No idea who the owner is, but a decent work, needs some more polishing and shining for the body. I saw this last week at Delkanda, may be while getting ready for the exhibition

I couldn't find it on the site known for ''quick'' deals. Curiously though, three Capri examples turned up. One project car supposedly in Boralesgamuwa and two daily runners for above 1mil. Then again, this is the site that had numerous vintage cars for sale in H'tota of all places!
