1968 Datsun 510 Sedan (Project Datto)

Its the new wave of overnight classic-car 'enthusiasts' dude!

Get an old car... do it up and quote an exhorbitant price.... then when they finally sell it... they even spread the word that it got sold close to the exorbitant price they quoted. It's happening a lot out there.

No offense to Komi anyway because the guy is not one of them anyway.

Exactly, even some reputed collectors seem to spread rumors of inflated sale prices.

But then again, doing a proper job can rack up some serious bills. If the rest of the car is as good as the paint job, the price 'might' be justifiable.

I ran in to Shane tonight who supplied the parts for the car in question. And it seems the owner has genuinely spent a pretty penny on that 510. But the thing is you can spend buttloads of money on a car but you can't expect to recoup it all back when the itch to sell hits you.especially if the car in question has not yet established itself as a mainstream classic.

I'm sorry to see this car being savaged on Facebook. The owner doesn't deserve it.He has done a superb restoration job....But one must be realistic about the worth of their vehicle when pricing it.

On a differrent totally unrelated note.I see some people on social media trying to make classics out of junk and quoting absurd prices.Especially certain old Japanese cars. All I can say to genuine classic lovers is to not buy in to the hype.Pretty soon this bubble will burst and prices will come down.

It will boil down to personal preference I guess. If someone is willing to pay what is asked, it will change hands. And if you're doing a car up to make money out of it, that's a risky risky business...

And MD is right, I've seen some common old cars with "sillara badu" plastered on trying to pass as "JDM Classics". To each it's own I guess :/

Not just the datto, even Shane's escort was raped on Ela Kiri.

I think the tag has something to do with the fact that givantha's 510 went for a similar price allegedly to a collector

Don't believe everything you hear...

Spec for spec a bog standard 510 would be superior to a bog standard Escort I think. The thing is the Escort has a much better motorsport record both locally and internationally. So it all depends on the buyers' preference and perception. With all the so called true classics at astronomical prices I am not at all surprised that buyers will flock to buy these cars. When demand outstrips supply, prices will fly.

Guys I saw a 510 4 door in ingiriya today on my way to bulathsinhala with my cousins. It was at a metal scrapper place. Couldn't get details on my way back as we got late to come. It was on ingiriya meepe road just passing the bus stand. Hope our forum members who live or pass through that way can have a look if anyone is interested.

Im daily travelling via Ingiriya towards Rathnapura side from Horana. Is it just passing Ingiriya bus stand?. If anyone interested, I can visit the place. Edited by H.C

You'll need to do a small detour, turn towards Padukka and pass the bus stand on your left. It was before the public library.

well, this is lying dormant and being worked on at a snail's pace at the garage, but i do have little bursts of sunshine every now and then. the seats are done, need to scruff up the last payment and go see deens. (if you see me under maradana bridge dressed in drag, throw some money)

also, i want to do something special with the audio. this is what i think about in between anatomy and physiology. my vision is to completely hide the speakers/head unit on this car, but at the same time have a kick-ass audio system.

so firstly, after some research online i fond out that it has been done before, by none other than the legendary Anth(ony) from new zealand with this 4 door dime. the front blower vents, which are redundant because i have an ac, are perfect mounts for 4" speakers:

and the rears, well, this is the coolest bit: the rears can be hidden away with some clever uphosltery. gonna take this up with deens and attempt it. shouldn't be too difficult.

also, these are gonna be powered speakers, running off a four channel amp, and i'll find a way of sticking a small sub in there as well.

found the perfect head unit which can be hidden as well, with a small display/controller which can be mounted under the dash.

now gimme back my car!!

I remember seeing a jeep mod where the sub was mounted in the rear seat (albeit at the expense of comfort) will go well with your stealthy vision for audio. Let me gey back home and find the link for you.

I was thinking of hiding away the head unit after you mentioned it. Maybe you can use a sliding door over it. The door can be blended to the dash/centre console. You can take it a step ahead and use a linear actuator to open and close it with a small push button.
