Ek3 Acceleration Issue: Low Pickup

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My car is EK3 1996 EXI manual one. My car having an issue with the acceleration as below.

When the accelerator is pressed and keep steady, I feel like car is not pulling forward properly and the car doesn’t get the speed as it supposed to do. (feel like car doesn't pickup well)

This doesn't happen all the time and in such cases, what I do is release the accelerator and press it again. Then, it gives proper pulling power and car speed gets increased. (this also doesn't work some times :speechless-smiley-019: )

I feel this issue mostly when going on higher gears (3 or 4) and also feel acceleration is jerky.

Any help on this is appreciated.

Thanks

Ruwan

I think your engine might have a slight miss. My suggestion is if this has not been done in a while to do what is referred to as a tune up, which is to change the plugs, check the plug wires and contacts, clean the throttle body, replace air filter if necessary and adjust ignition timing if this is possible. When your engine isn't producing as much power as it used to you can experience this type of issue. Do the simple things first and then see if it resolves your problem. If it doesn't in an EFI car the next thing to do is to plug it to a computer and run a diagnostic.

There is a slight possibility there is an issue with your clutch, pressure plate or the flywheel as well so do get that checked out as well..........

Thanks Don,

I already replaced the all plugs (NGK) and did a throttle body cleanup, tuneup few time ego. That didn't fix the issue.

I guess what you meant by "Running a diagnostics by connecting to a computer" is doing a scanning of the car electrical system for faults. Is that correct?

Can you please let me know a good place to get this done?

Can this type of issue occurred by a bad sensor? (Ex: TPS sensor)

Thanks

The diagnostic is probably best done by the agent since it isn't hugely expensive. If it finds something you can get the repair done elsewhere

Most of the case will be fixed after the proper engine tune-up. So you must also try with cleaning injectors as well. Not only plugs. if there is a TPS sensor issue, then definitely you will get the engine light.( yellow)

alos you must install Honda genuine parts for best performance

When you depress the accelerator, you will not get the pulling power ? and jerk. I had similar issue with my Exi 98 and after change the Fuel filter, Injector cleanup and correct timing. Now all gone

Check below items

  1. Timing – this must be done by the Honda specialist. And check the timing belt position as well
  2. Fuel consumption – should be 10-12km in Colombo
  3. Colour of the exhaust – silencer – less carbon
  4. Try with another ignation distrubuter

So the ECU is normally should be ok , if there is no engine light (when you on the ignition the engine light will come and should go off in 3,4 seconds)

Thanks Siri.

1. How much will it cost a fuel filter?

2. Is there a good place\mechanic that I can go to do a engine tuneup and check the first point ("Timing – this must be done by the Honda specialist. And check the timing belt position as well")

Thanks

From agents it is 8K, but it's Korian. you can try with TechMotors for the Japanese parts.

I do not want to start a fire adding best mechanics names on this forum nut .... you can search and find.

so if you can afford, go to agents, for a best service.

start from simplest,

TEST 1:

get ur car to a silent road.speedup to 60kmph. i bet now the car is on 4th gear. now stop gas and wait until the car get down its RPM nearly 1500 rev/min. now foot on the accelerator (full throttle position)

Note: in this test don't expect for a quick acceleration. only thing you should worry about car jerk (misfires)

TEST 2:

speedup the car again to 60kmph . shift to 3rd gear to rise up the RMP to 3000 and foot on the accelerator (full throttle position).

please update the forum with the result.

Motivation: engine misfire problems related to "ignition electrical path" are noticeable in low RPM.in fact it is there in the high RMP, but difficult to be noticed

Might be the clutch plate. You can do a small test to inspect the issue.

Start the car

Apply hand break

Shift to 1st gear

slowly give the clutch without accelerating.

If the plate is good, engine stalls

Slippery plates will let it will keep running
