Yesterday was a potential historic day in automotive history as Silicon Valley, California carmaker, Tesla Motors, began deliveries of it's ground breaking and revolutionary Model S electric cars to customers at its factory in California.

thanks cali.....by the way you said sold out for the next 2 years in US only right?

Yup rameez. Currently the Model S is on sale only in the U.S. where there is a backlog of orders. Once the U.S. backlog is filled, international sales will begin. Tesla will build a RHD version of the Model S and they have agents in London and Tokyo so someone could bring the Model S down to SL.

I've seen both the Karma and Model S in person, and sat in both cars. The Karma exterior design is definitely sexier looking than the Model S, but exterior styling is the only thing the Karma does better than the Model S, and the Model S is beautiful already. The Model S is a much better car in every other way, and when one takes into consideration how advanced it's 100% electric drivetrain is, it's way ahead.

This is the concept for the Infiniti LE luxury electric car that Nissan is going to start selling in 2014 to go against the Model S. The Infiniti LE is going to be based on an updated Nissan Leaf drivetrain, but based on the puny specs Nissan has published, the Tesla already destroys it.

Front structure of the Model S

Electric motor in the rear of the Model S means a large front boot is possible

No engine in front also provides much greater crash protection. No engine to be pushed into the car in a frontal collision.

Because there is no engine in front, the front structure is optimized for crash protection. Model S is the only car in the world to get a full 5 star crash safety rating in every category in the 2012 crash tests.

Rear structure and electric motor of the Model S

Huge rear cargo area is made possible by the very small but powerful proprietary Tesla electric motor powering the car.

Massive rear cargo area

Underneath the cargo area, between the rear wheels, is the 416 hp / 500 NM torque electric motor. The Model S electric motor takes up only a fraction of the space of a internal combustion engine.

Electric motor is very small, but very powerful, and accelerates the Model S faster than a 2012 Porsche 911

Optional rear jump seats make the Model S a 7 passenger vehicle

The Battery of the Model S

Photos by Californikan

Model S battery provides close to 500 km of range on a full charge. Battery can also be swapped out in less than 60 seconds.

Low battery placement provides a very low center of gravity for amazing handling. Center of gravity is lower than some Porsches and Ferraris.

Battery forms part of the structure and helps the model S achieve the best structural stiffness of any car.

Battery design allows totally flat interior floor
