One of my friend trying to import Toyota US 4 Runner from japan. Once i also had this idea. But I dumped it bcoz its useless waste of money. Now my friend have that fever. He wanted to know the legal side of this. One of worker in DMT told us that in Sri Lanka there isn't way to register left hand drive vehicle. Is it true? He badly want that vehicle and there's no right hand drive car on that model. Please anyone have any idea about that legal matter.post-44148-0-22854600-1333448798_thumb.jpost-44148-0-54329600-1333448758_thumb.jpost-44148-0-96415200-1333448774_thumb.jpost-44148-0-89548300-1333448787_thumb.j

You can convert, just the cost becomes a lot higher. There are specialist companies who does these conversions and they fabricate the necessary parts for the conversion. Funny enough there is a Sri Lankan company who converts a number of American marques like hummers for re export I believe. The vehicles go from the port straight to their factory and then gets shipped out again to the customer.

Ya. I've heard that too. but they're not agent in hummer. I think they're just 3rd party like Merc and AMG.

I don't know the real facts so couldn't say much. and I don't think It will stand as company fitted as original.

has your friend given a toss of a thought at how difficult it will be to drive a LHD vehicle in this country? he'll never be able to overtake!

You have a good point my dear, that a one reason i didn't do that first time. Even right side we barely survive. But my Friend stayed long time in US and he had experience but in SL roads i don't know how to manage. He isn't willing to drive it day today life. He first tried to lour from US but It cost twice much than japan.

No actually 4runner chassis related to Tacoma which aslo North american model. and way tougher than Landcruiser. Its like living in heaven the suspension is like in a pillow to inside and monster from outside. Total different experience. Like land rover or Lincoln.

its not about experience, u just cant see the road :) if im not wrong isnt it illegal to drive a LHD vehicle without a permit/LHD license? + the vehicle must have board that says LHD

No they are specialist companies not connected with the manufacturer at all, and from what I've heard the quality of work is good as most of these vehicles are customised for people who can pretty much afford it. AMG is the performance division of Mercedes Benz so that is different. But that is what you will have to do if you want to bring it to SL.

First off, sorry for reviving an old thread.

But does anyone know where the overseas vehicle sales is located? Or any contact details?

I have plans to to bring my wrangler diown to SL and want to see how it has to be done and at what cost.

Thanks in advance for any information.

its probably easier for you to buy a wrangler here machan. at three-four times what you paid there. there's just too much red tape. i think you need to have used the car for over 5 years or something. not sure tho.

I doubt it will be cheaper. A brush through the D*MO site left me lightheaded. And there aren't many used JKs popping up for sale.

I bought mine brand new and because of non existent taxes here in Qatar I got it pretty cheap. I plan to use it for about 2 years and send it back home.

there used to be a permit scheme which is now suspended, but the requirement of usage depended on the age of the vehicle. If i remember correctly, the five year requirement was applicable for vehicles close to 10 years of age. Anything less than 3 (or 5 I forget) years requires just 1 year of ownership. I heard some rumors that people working overseas will be able to bring down their vehicle at the point they are moving back permanently under reduced taxed and duties. I will have a poke around the Import Control and Customs departments next couple weeks while on vacation to see what my options are.

The reason I'm looking into this now is cos I'm planning on some modifications which will be too much of an investment to lose if I have to give the car up here. For anything I have to convert it to RHD and that's why I'm searching for this operation in Sri Lanka which will be easier than getting it done from Dubai.

The permit for foreign exchange scheme is still present (well at least it was in December/January....the rate at which SL regs change who knows...) and what was suspended was the gift permit scheme.

If the car is less than 5 years you need to have owned it abroad for at least 1 year; more than five years you need to have owned it for 3-5 years. They used to issue the permit for LHD/RHD but as far as I know, now they only issue the permit if the car is RHD, which means the car needs to be RHD before arriving in SL. At least that is the normal process. Would be interesting to know if there is an alternative for LHD to get the permit on the condition that it is converted upon arrival.

Under the scheme you still pay all the normal duties/taxes.Only advantage is the valuation of the car is lesser as you are allowed to bring a car older than 2 years. So make sure you use it for 2 years or more before bringing it over.

Thanks for this information. I must've confused it with the gift permit. I will dig a bit deeper on this then. I was planning to use it for around two years anyway so in this case I will see at what point it will be most beneficial based on the rate of depreciation stipulated. Hopefully the scheme holds up :S

So far I've heard that LHD to RHD conversions are readily done in Dubai and since the JK wrangler is offered RHD as well, the parts should be available. Only thing is that I will have to deregister from Qatar, ship it to Dubai, get it converted and shipped over from Dubai. Would rather do it straightaway from SL if the cost is comparable.
