Old Cars In Highway

you kidding me bro that is 176KMPH for a 70s car........ :sport-smiley-004: how was the feel of it......what is the engine capacity of it......i must take my lancer as well...cannot wait to test it.....when was this anyway.....???

The Germans have had autobahns since before World War II dude. I think the cars they made to run on it were made to run long distances at high speed because of that reason. Do you have the same confidence in the Jap compact class?

i dont think the jap compact class can come closer....but still there are some fast cars out there.........from the japanese...but still i think doing 176+++ in a 1969 is a bit freeky in my terms.

i doubt they check for seat belts as i drove a 6 sri 1969 benz on the highway.. they never checked us.. entry to exist took us 40 mins.. hit 110MPH.. could have gone faster but didnt have the balls to...

Whoa! You mean 110 KMPH right? Eitherway, at those speeds you need seat belts; not to comply with any laws that may or may not be enforced, but for the safety of the driver and passengers.

Well wiki states that some of the Merc's from that production year were capable of doing 200 kmph; so its theoretically possible. I guess the car's been well maintained to still be able to hit those speeds. However I can't help cringe, at the thought of doing those kinds of speeds in an older car with no modern crumple zones, airbags or seat belts!

that is great ...how was the maruti.....were you able to do over 110 at least.............???? it is more fun to drive and see a small car perform right to the edge

You must be bloody joking....

I have been on a Maruti on galle road (Moratuwa) which travel 130 KM/H, but it won't pass that mark how hard you try. Same car done 125 - 130 KM/H on E01 too. But I should say it was not easy or fun like I did 160 KM/H on E01 last Sunday on my Honda Civic EK3

Hell Yeah !!

Does the seat belt rule apply to all vehicles here?

The Gentlemen on the entrance will remind you to wear seat belts. I have seen many people ignore this, most of the time they don't have seat belts at all. Why risk you life ? Better keep safe at all costs. I always wear seat belts even I'm driving my 300 - Civic on a regular road.

it is miles, it actually didnt feel that fast.. so i checked with my brothers car following me.. and his read 174kph... so im sure it was accurate.. im not some idiot trying to go as fast as i can.. i was very careful and loved it... i know about the seat belts.. im actually looking for an original set of front belts.. they are rare to find and hence extremely expensive,,

my car is a 2000cc in line 4... its in perfect running condition with all maintained uptodate.. it had a genuine 48,000 miles on the clock till 2004( D*MO confirms it) so you can imagine.. now the clock reads 64000miles..

i doubt you would feel as safe in a Japanese compact class as those cars are light.. my w115 weights close to one and a half tons and was extremely stable at high speeds..

been on the highway a few times after this.... and i would still choose the old fuel gazzler over anything else.. purely for the driving pleasure..

I put my 15 year old Alfa 164 on the E01 yesterday and I must say, it was like putting a fish in to water... :)

The old Euros, regardless of age takes to 100kmph + cruising so naturally. The only glitch I realized was that one of my rims have a small dent that causes a vibration at 100+. A trip to Macro will sort that out.

The MB W115 is a graceful machine. The E01 is where it belongs.. along with all the old large displacement Euros that were languishing in the congested roads suffering despite what they are capable of.... :)

Finally, the term used in the past for old Euro can have a real meaning. The 'Weekend Run' will never be the same again.

Yesterday I saw a 16 sri Corolla DX Wagon on E 01. He was driving less than 80 km/ph. As i know the minimum speed on E 01 is 80 kmph. Is this true ?

that is a bit silly....if you want to drive below 80 go in the normal road....after all highways are not for chickenhearted fellows......besides the corolla can touch more than 120+++

ROFLMAO!!!!! Dude that car should not even be doing 100kmph!! I had one following me on E01 the other day and it was hilarious to see him trying to prove a point. At 100kmph it seems to bve fluttering all over the place. I had to floor it worried thart he might come crash in to me in his attempt to keep that POS on the road straight.

Do us and yourself a favour. stick to a speed less than 100kmph or better still, take the old Galle road... :)
