Nissan Sunny B12 Timing Chine

Timing chains are meant to last the life of the engine, so you should only really consider changing one under the following circumstances.

1. The chain itself is faulty (get a good mechanic to check this out).

2. The chain adjuster bearing is worn out (if the chain is found to be quite worn at this point you can also change it).

3. Your engine needs to be rebuild due to wear and tear (you should always check things like the timing chain, internal bearings valve guides etc when you are doing an engine rebuild).

If you bought the car recently best is just to have it inspected if you have any concerns, particularly if you can hear metallic ring when the engine is running (usually the adjuster bearing). I would not lose any sleep over it though. Timing chain failures are quite rare especially compared to timing belt failures.
