Fastening Of Seat Belts Compulsory From Tomorrow

You'd think that people with the resources to have a car/computer and educated enough to speak English should have the brains to buckle up.

Today there was a 301- 7 series BMW in front of us on the road - the car looked spotless and my wife commented how well maintained the car looked, despite it's age. Just as I was commenting that someone who can afford to own a 7 series with a 3.5l engine can afford to have someone to wash the car every day, the car turned to a side road without signaling - so even all that money can't teach road manners...

it seems its quite possible to get rich and learn english without either manners nor the intelligence to use a safety belt :)

let me ask you this; would you be safer in a 65- BMW or a WP KM Maruti 800?

I agree with you some of the old cars are well maintained than some newer vehicles. and also some of the newer vehicles from china and india are not having many safety features which many old european brands have, but vehicles are not meant forever, older it gets costlier it gets for repairs and quality will be deteriorating.

your point is 65- BMW even after deteriorating is still better than a new Maruti 800, maybe but it depends on the maintenance, therefore some 65- BMWs are very good some may not be,

This is the reason most of the countries they allow owners who still prefer to hold their old vehicle, can do that by paying a additional fee ( annually) fee will be increasing with the age of the vehicle.

There are many benefits for introducing a expiry date for vehicles,

1. Newer vehicles with better fuel efficiency will enter the market saving on forex to the country and less pollution

2. Prices of second hand cars will come down as, closer the expiry date for vehicle less demand it will have. vehicles will be properly depreciated. and more people can afford vehicles.

3. Create a balance in the vehicle population ( currently only accident condemned vehicles are remove from the roads)

4. When the local prices are low even used cars can be exported to countries without limits on age (africa)

My feeling is introducing a expiry for vehicles is a MUST for Sri Lanka.

I dunno if you're aware of this, but in SL, new vehicles means even more money lost abroad. Its not like we make the things here, not counting Micro, which seems to be more of a kit manufacturing thing than anything else these days. Not forgetting charges to transport all those new cars here.

If an old FB-14 can do 10-11, and a new Corolla does similar numbers in the same situation, then that newer vehicle advantage doesn't look quite such an advantage there, huh?

You're free to have your own opinion, of course. My opinion is, its a good thing no one is bothered with your opinion.

Dear Mr P,

There is no doubt new vehicles will keep coming and we need new vehicles in the country, what do you suggest increase the duty again so number of vehicle imports will reduce, think broader Mr P ,stopping new imports is not a solution, if possible should reduce the duty further down so newer vehicles can come in, we need to have mechanism to remove old vehicles from our roads.

Do you realize what will happen to this country's economy if every tom, dick and harry could afford a car ?

We would all have cars but we would also have to pay a million rupees just to buy bread just like in Zimbabwe. Exchange rate will depreciate and inflation will be on the rise, soon we will in be dept cause we have spent more than we earn as a country.

Politicians might be dumb but people in higher places like the Central bank know what they are doing, and i can guarantee to you that they would know much much more than an imbecile who bought a prius and thinks that everyone else should do the same.

Usually when people dont know something they shut up and listen to people who do, i highly suggest you start doing that ! <_<

Political career or not he isnt an idiot who thinks that everyone should import new cars. And dont worry no one here is expecting you to understand anything about anything cause dumasses like you come and go every day, because of that we have become bullshit proof and simply dont give a rats ass about the opinion of wannabes. And with that attitude you will be gone before the next week.

"you r a real Dumbass"- trust me the feeling is mutual and im pretty sure i got more people backing up my claim

Dude, I selected one quote, coz I was talking against the one quote, not your whole point. Now go back and try to figure out what it is I was talking about.

Dude, I highly suggest you know what your talking about. The Governor maybe a failed as a politician, but he has plenty of credentials to do the job he has. The fact that he is just sitting there being a yes man doesn't mean he doesn't know what he is doing, just that he got a taste of power and jumped straight into that "power corrupts" thing.

You know why your logic is daft? He contested from the other side. I don't think his ending up at the CB was a result of him not getting enough votes, it was more to do with switching sides after not getting enough votes.

What do you suggest we do with the old cars?

Sri Lanka isn't wealthy enough yet to do this to old cars on a large scale...

car-crusher-2a.jpg

...a "Cash Allowance Rebate" type tax incentive program: a government tax incentive program to get newer, safer, cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles on the road and very old vehicles off the road (by being junked).

When the government finally trys to put a law regarding the safety of road transportation, i think we all should just accept it and

obey the law without trying to judge the cops or anyone for that matter, if we wear the seatbelt we are safe. whatever said and done

no country has to impose this law, seatbelts on a car are there to wear it and not for show. And no government should tell us to wear the

seatbelt we should be intelligent enough to do so ourselves.

How do you equate the increase in per capita income with hyperinflation?

How do you equate the increase in per capita income with hyperinflation?

I wasnt being literal you know

Zimbabwe was just an example of a fallen economy, we wont have hyperinflation here but we will notice a huge drop in the SL rupee exchange rate as a result of currencies flowing out which would incidentally mean we would have to pay more for the same product that we have now.

As for the increase in per capita income we are still at the 2500$ mark, still a long way to go and certainly in no state to throw away 5-6 year old cars.
