Cops On The Streets!

Recommended Posts

Guys better watch out coz ive seen cops along the kandy - colombo road very often and now they are armed with speed guns. yes, they were put out of use briefly after a court ruling but have now come back as the ruling was ruled out for some other reason. from what i heard from the OIC of my area is that the speed limit within city limits is 56kmph and on highways its 72kmph. better keep an eye on the speedo as well. these guys are active at night too. they stay up till 12 midnight as well..

The next main penalty is crossing center lines. double lines and single lines are thoroughly watched upon by cops hiding in bushes and behind trees. road rules are a must if you dont want to end up in courts!

There is a good chance that the cops are "flexible" on the fine payment method when u get caught out of colombo.

They were waiting for the money...there was another van who had gotten caught too...met him when v stopped to have a snack, apparently he had paid them off too...so they were purely up for the cash

who said Sri Lanka police does not have an online payment system. :D you can pay online on the spot.

It's not on the spot mate..you can directly mail your money in cash to their inbox... :D (Inbox = white boxes in both sides of traffic police bikes )

The best thing is not the money, theres no demerit system in sri lanka to suspend the licence, but paying cops and getaway with it is much more convenient than wasting time in police stations and post offices.

Bribing a cop for Dummies!

A reference for the rest of us...

When flagged down by a cop.

1. Do not panic, Cops are not man eating monsters

2. Slow down and do not attempt to flee the scene. park on the road side

3. If you have passengers in your car please step out off the vehicle and proceed to step 4. if not you may remain in the vehicle for the cop to come to you. (This is an important step as cops do not want many witnesses for the crime that they are going to commit, but your individual experience may vary from cop to cop)

4. DO NOT Argue about the offense(you know you are guilty), simply hand over the license and insurance.

5. if the cop takes too long in inspecting the license and insurance and tries to talk about where you are from and what you do for living. that's an indicator for you to say these golden words "Ralahami udawwak karanna barida?"

6. If you get a positive signal for step 5. then DO NOT publicly open up your wallet and produce a note to the cop. ask him to give the license and insurance and pretend to put it back in your wallet then take a 500 RS note and place it in his hand as if you are giving him some candy..

then you walk out of the crime scene. all clean.

and one last tip keep 500 Rs change at all times. i had to pay 1000 Rs once since i had no change. they cant look at the "candy" till you leave the scene.

copped around 6-7 times mostly for effing crossing the dual line when over taking.

and one more thing i do not encourage anyone to bribe civil servants. please drive safe and obey the road rules and you will save your money and your time.

Cheers!

Good one.

Once I got caught at dambulla and when I told the cop that I am from Negombo. Then He said he will pay on behalf of me Rs. 550 (crossing the double line). How nice our cops. they really take care of us.

Well, these bribery and corruption stories are nice, but I was once copped for cutting the single line in Kurunegala and while I didn't come up with any excuses, the cop himself noted I was from Colombo and sent me off, telling me I would have to haul my ass back to Kurunegala just to get my license back. He was rather polite too.

A reason why he softened up may have been because I had my mom and two other ladies in the car (I'm not exactly the kind that melts hearts), but either way I was rather grateful.

And it's a good thing he didn't have a speed gun on him, or the line offence would not have been the only problem I would have had to face that day.

They maybe a minority, but there are some generous cops out there.

A well written post Mr. MiraOwner. :D

A few Additions:

1. Another good way to judge a helpful cop is to keep a 500 rupee note in a sort of a visible area in the dash. In the center console right in front of the gear lever is a perfect spot. The key thing to notice is where the guy is looking, when the cop leans through the open shutter and talks to you on the offence. If he's talking to you with short glances at the note, you know you are on the right track.

(One time I had pumped fuel and had the remaining money in the ctr console. Then got copped for talking on the mobile while driving. "Ralahami" simply couldnt take the eyes off the money while he was going on and on. It was as if he was talking to the money <_< . Noticed the same reaction with many cops)

2. They like being addressed as "Ralahami". If you follow this they will also wholeheartedly call you "Mahaththaya". Then with the mutual respect the deal is easy. So dont try to be a wise ass, however educated you are or how ever much money you have, if you want the shortest way out of your fine.

3. If you ever get caught in for a DUI, dont try to negotiate the pay up. pay 2k, 3k or whatever the copa suggest and get out of there. In such an offence believe me its worth it to pay up and go. If you satisfy the bugger with a good amount believe me, he will go out of the way to help you. I once even got a police escort while I pass all the check points :D

(Please note that I'm not encouraging drunk driving. Above is for those few unavoidable situations that you rarely face ;) )

Happy Driving Guys...

Come now, guys... I agree all the other stuff is either in jest or useful but please lets not talk about drunk driving in this context. DUI is a serious thing and people die that way - its not like crossing double lines or something.

I've met my fair share of Sri Lankans who claim that they can drive as good or better while drunk but the accident statistics seem to disagree.

Hands Down and Agreed Guys. Yes DUI was a serious offence. No Arguments there.

I'm definitely not from that club where they claim they can drive just as well with a half a bottle of whisky in the belly.

Got away with DUI a few times before by paying up 1000, 500 etc. Got caught once just because I drove off 1 k.m. to bring cigeretts to a drinking party. Was never on a sorry state man but got copped. Guys asked for 3k, I refused, ended up paying 7.5k with a DL suspended for 2 months.

Learnt my lesson guys, never doing it again. Its the good ol' three wheeller for me to come home every friday... :alc:

i have got thru them all d time with notes. yeah it advisable to keep change at all times. cops are all happy to earn sum petty cash for their day to day spendings. so its always best you try to talk out the situ with offering some "help". my general line which always works is, as soon as i get out from the vehicle, go to towards the cop smiling. you know why he stopped u and the only solution is to 'bend in two' if u dnt like the ordeal of goin to post offices and courts. i always say, 'sir udawwak karanta' 'podi support ekak dennang' then he asks monawada udawwa? then i reply, dadey methana gevannang nathank post office gaanae rashthiyadu wendaoney ne, ithin dadey sir da thennang, podi uthawwak karanta, api dureng enney. thats the line! then he responds eka hondai tha? kamak nadda? and aftr dat continues wit d usual questions- kohenda enney, mokadda karanney, wahaney kithenek innawada etc! after the questioning he asks- hari ehenang kiyada thenney? ikmanta kiyanda. ape loku sir ta penda thenna epa. (LOL) then i take out my ID and roll the note and place it under and hand it over to him as if im handing over the ID. they dont even look or count the notes even. just slide it into d pocket and thats it! another relieved driver :P

once my driver did one of d funniest pranks! an officer caught him for crossing the double lines and after the usual ordeal he had demanded Rs500 (8 years back) and asked him to place it under the policemans hat which is lying on a parapet wall just a few meters away. wat my driver did was he turned d other way and quickly swapped the 500 rupee note with a ten rupee note and placed it under the hat and left the scene with a long face as if sad at the loss of 500! lolz. i still wonder the look on their faces wen they foung d 10 rupee! :D
