Old Land Rover With A 4Dr5 Engine

landy del

Recommended Posts

Hi, this call for help goes to all Land Rover enthusiast.

Couple of years back I purchased a Land Rover long wheel base ( series). The previous owner had change the Landy engine with a 4dr5 engine (Yes I know that this is sacrilege in the eyes of purist Landy fans) . Leaf-spring suspensions were also changed to coil-spring. The 4dr5 engine was hardly used and is in extremely good condition. Recently I gave the old girl a full defender facelift including the interior. However it still has the 4dr5 engine and the mitsubishi gearbox, the old landy differential front and back.

I'm told by the mechanic:

1-The 4dr5+gear box, engine does not match the gear ratios of the landy differentials: therefore no proper pickup/ acceleration

2- It will be even worst by the time I fix the new dual AC

3- When I checked whether I could put 2 mitsubishi differentials, he says its too short and as a result the alloy wheels will start hitting the chassis/body

Considering the amount I have spent so far, and the fact that the 4dr5 engine is in good condition, I don't feel like going for a new TDi engine...

Some of my friends have advised me to change the cogs inside the differential to match the 4dr5 (pardon my not so technical terms) . Can this be successful ?

Somebody else told me to put 2 defender differentials and a defender gearbox with an adaptor to match the 4dr5 engine

Can one of you guys please advice me. I'm sure there are other people who had faced the same problem and may have found mitigatory solution.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers All

Well i think your defender plan would be a better option..

I suggest going for an LT77 gearbox.. off an early 110/ 90

with matching axles.. But dunno how it'll suit your modded coil spring system though..

And it will also introduce all wheel drive (full time 4wd)..

Try to find axles with disc brakes on the rear..

The problem you have is the 4DR5 does not produce as much power as the 300TDI engine (hence the reason why this engine is so popular)

4DR5 75 to 80 PS (55 to 59 kW)

300TDI 111 bhp (83 kW) @ 4,250 rpm

Source wikipedia. So just changing the gear box, or changing the cogs is not going to solve this particular problem. I wonder if you considered the 4DR6 engine, quite similar to the 4DR5 but turbocharged.

Hi Tiv,

Wow, thats fast...thanks for the feedback. I will talk to the mechanic ( who had done a good job on the bodywork and interior so far) now that I have some info.

Problem is I'm expatriated an visit SL once a year. So I cannot attend to things in person. The Landy was purchased merely on a whim without going in to much details. Its to be used by my parents (in their 70's..LOL) for the better part of the year. Good suggestion on the axels with disc brakes, coz old drum seems to be plagued with lot of problems.

Cheers Mate!

Hi The Don,

Thanks for the feedback and well noted.

I have heard horror stories about Landy motors ( Not surprisingly though coz the Brits seems to fail in their quality department) and constant oil leaks and stuff. So thats part of the reason that I'm not too keen on going for a Landy Motor. Then again I might be wrong. However I do understand the power issue as highlighted by you. Correct, the mechanic himself suggested the 4DR6.

I'm also told that the 4DR5 can be locally fitted with a turbo...how successful is this? I'm concerned that the 4DR5 may not be built to have a turbo..i.e. it will lead to faster ware & tare and host of other problems.

Secondly as I have mentioned above in my reply to Tiv, I'm not going to use this car for not more than 1 month per any given year as I live out of SL. So most part it will be used by parents for city running. Furthermore I'm not an aggressive driver and not a extreme off-roader. So, will the 4DR5 be enough for that kind of use? My fear is once the AC is fitted, it will be too sluggish to handle even a small incline.

I'm also told that Nissan turbo engines are also good for Landys. May be I go for a Nissan motor + gearbox + axles. Any idea on the cost of Jap motors+gearbox+ axles ?

Maybe I will go for Landy or Jap engine at a latter stage. For now as a stopgap measure I would like to mend the existing axles the best I can and run it for while.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Cheers Mate!

By the way are you the same Upul, who had a another tread going about restoring a old landy and wanting to replace the old motor? I read that article too.

Cheers

I think so yes.I also had those problems, that now your are facing. Unfortunately I couldn't find any practical person to get a real advice.

These days Japanese engine prices are real high, Before u go for a jap motor please compare price with land rover 200Tdi engine. 200 turbo

direct Injection engine is the best practical motor land rover has ever produce. Other land rover secret is the center diff lock LT230 transfer box.

If u want to feel what is the land rover, least go for LT77 5 speed gear box with LT230 transfer box with compatible any motor. There r more issues,

But if u want to be a proud owner of a land rover, you have to live with those problems. Remember, LAND ROVERS & WIVES are same, so you have to,

cause its our passion. Have fun with your Landy........!

regards,

Upul

I've been in a few of these 4DR5 land rovers and I think the engine is capable of coping with an AC and also being practically used for off roading. In fact I went on one in Udawalawe and it coped fine with being stuck in the mud a few times. So I would not worry about that too much. Speed on the road is a different matter.

Personally I would not swap the land rover diff lock and the gear box to a japanese one because as S III Upul pointed out, they have a lot of potential. Incidentally if you are really keen on power, International still makes a version of the 300 TDI engine, and its a 2.8L version with some serious power. Perhaps its an idea.

Sadly original land rover engines are quite expensive, even second hand because they have a cult following and there is strong demand. In the UK these cars hardly depreciate in value. In my opinion the land rover engine easiest to live with is the Ford TDCI motor that was put in it under Ford ownership because its the same as the one they use in the Transit van and parts are plentiful and cheap as penuts (in the UK at least but its not that expensive to get your hand on bits from here). The downside is that it does have an ECU and an electronic fuel pump etc as its a common rail engine, so its not as simple as a 200TDI or a 300TDI and will require some expertise to maintain.

Dear Don, once again thanks for the feedback. Its good to know that the 4DR5 can manage the Landy...that takes a huge worry of my head.

Taking all the advice I have received so far, I plan to:

a) run as it is for while,

B) change the old axles (front/back) with defender types ( I understand this requires some modification to inner gears/ cogs in differential or axles)...hopefully this should take care of the break related problems and steering play/ handling problems.

c) Lastly switch to a original defender motor+ gear box: I will consider the 300 TDI 2.8L as suggested by you.

This week the car is supposed to be delivered. I'm told it looks good ( Uding baluwama Elakiri...habai yatin baluwoth thamai.....in the words of the guy who did it up). Unfortunately I will not be there to see it in person. So have to make do with some photos I guess. I plan to share the photos as and when I get them.

Next I will send it to a Land Rover AC specialist ( Muslim guy who is suppose to have is shop in the Colombo suburbs ) to fix the AC.

If you have any info on specialist to get the axle done, do let me know.

Happy off-roading !

Cheers

D

Dear Upul,

Thanks for the detailed feedback. Your recommendations are well noted. In my reply to Don, I have given my plans for the future. As suggested by you/ Don I will one day go for a Defender motor. If you have any cost related info on these, do please share with me. May be we can exchange info via email, if thats fine with you.

Fully agree with your comparison of Landys and Wives...although I'm yet to experience the latter..LOL. Like they say..."Banda Gatha Bere Gahapan Putha" or "Katu Maalu Kaawa nang Gilapan Puso" ....LOL

This week I hope to see the end-product, not in person, but from some pictures, as I'm currently out of SL.

And you to mate...happy off-roading!

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

looks really cool man.. I love the wide wheels and the AT tyres. great on road and not bad for off roading either. you seem to have spent quite a lot on that mate. Since its all defender apart from the enqine and axles, i rekon you shud upgrade this to a 300 tdi with disc brake diffs. well done

ps. looks like even the mistubishi motor wants to leak oil when it sits on a landy chasis..

Awsome..!!

Am I seeing some drops of oil on the road? It`s a Landy indeed.. :D

But since it`s got a 4dr5 heart, could it be the diffs that`s leaking a bit?

P.S: lakshank spotted it as well..

Wow looks mean !

lol what up with the rocks

Thanks Stig....yes I myself was wondering about that LOL.... Note that I'm yet to see this in person, as I'm away from Sri Lanka. May be the driver was being cautious or the parking brakes are busted...LOL

Cheers!

Thanks Lakshan...I'm happy with the looks. Tyres were recommended by the guy who did this up ( Note..this Landy will see 99% road running with my parents who are 60+ and 1% off roading.... once year whenever I visit SL LOL). Yes it cost me an arm and a leg.....yes thats the plan to upgrade the motor, diffs as you suggested.

Actually the power steering line got busted and hence the leak LOL...

For the moment I will have to manage with old diffs which needs some maintenance ( currently the car is not handling well)...if you know a good mechanic for old diffs...do please refer...

Since I'm not there its very hard to get things done...

Cheers Mate...

Oh god. Are you happy with the performance of 4DR5 for this long wheel base landy???

This looks really nice.

Hi Iroshana...LOL...I'm yet to drive it ....my bro say its ok...but a Landy Motor will be the thing.....

Thanks for the encouragement....for the moment I will have to "Balala Santhosa Wenawa"

Cheers....

Mr.Cat...thanks Bro....

 I know Landys do leak...but in this case its the busted power steering pipe...being sorted out at the moment...

Old diffs needs some care...according to my Bro...its running all over.....hell of lot steering play and all....thats the next job

Nice...and props for the choice of colour.

Thanks Master Don...

Yes I love that colour too...earlier I was thinking for the Fiery Red of the latest Fire and Ice series...then thought its too much for this ole' hag with lot of plastic surgery and Botox...

I opted for this blue coz its not that common....

I will post some more photos as and when I get them...including the old ones...how it use to look....

Happy off-roading !

I know a good guy. but the problem is a if you are not around, you can assume things will not be done as per to ur plan. I am somewhat in the same position and my 110 needs a new clutch kit. even though my parents are in sl, its quite hectic for them to deal with a LR unlike other vehicles. you never know what will come up until you open the bag. If you are concerned about the quality of work done, then I recommend you get it done when u are there. however if you want the contact details, drop me a mail to [email protected]

cheers
