Peugeot 504 Restore

Great to hear that you finally took it for a spin. Quick things you can do are, repair the front shock absorbers as they're repairable and a front overall bush kit (it was 2750/-) when I last changed them about 4 years back.

Also in GL there are rear CV joints and axles. Check for quality of them and repair or grease pack if required if grease is bad and if dust/mud trapped inside, you'll destroy them soon. So better check these.

Do an overall fluid change, the brake, transmission the diff and grease pack (at a service station) following.

  • The front ball joints (this is not possible in GR but in GL you can) and tie rod ends,
  • Torque tube (where the drive shaft is hidden in, this tube starts from the tail end of the gearbox and goes to differential box which is mounted on to the body)
  • Steering rack. (Also if possible, take the steering rack out and check the quality of the rack piston. Replacing with a brand new piston would cost you about 800 rupees and it's well worth it. You can disregard if the rack is smooth and rattle free.

Best thing of this generation french cars is almost all spares are repairable even front shock absorbers!!.

Optionally you can take the lights out and clean the lenses and reflectors. I used to split them and clean them and re-fix using silicone adhesive.

take out the panel just behind the hood (bonnet) and observe for any bottlenecks in water draining lines. There's a one in the middle and two at each sides. Usually leaves and other small particles blocks these drain lines and water tend to accumulate. This can result in excessive corrosions, so better be cautious. Clean this area with a pressurized air and apply some WD40. However, if you have any plans to do body work in the future, you can do it at that time.

Don't forget the rims. Take them out, remove tires and see how bad it's corroded. I don't think it's feasible now to spend for a brand new set of rims as back in 2005 one cost me about 6500/-. You can try to restore the rims and even make them tubeless!!. This I've done with the 504 (L) (maroon color one in the pictures) I had. Tinker guy repaired them with small metal pieces and one leaking spot has been identified on the side wall of the rim where it cannot be welded. Used brass welding and filled that small hole and grinded and smoothed. Only burden is each rim you have to fit a tubeless tire (a test tire I've used) and check for leaks and then redo tinker work.

All these are options depending on the level of restoration you wish to dive into. :) Don't think I'm making them mandatory or such.

Awaiting for more porn :P

have to repair the front shocks i guess and have to grease everything and do oil change, and its really hard to steer, on this weekend change acceleration cable and clean the petrol tank because now using it on the bottle, and do a full service if everything else done on the weekend then clean the lens like u said. the rims are corroded have to fix them probaly make it tubeless not sure thought for right now not going to do the body work probally start the bodywork in a month or more.

here some porno pics for u to enjoy:

Harshan, I was too little then to remember the model but it was black :) The head office where my dad worked at the time only had one at that time but its possible other branch offices had more. I used to wonder around the vehicle yard even at the tender age of 7 :)

I see, so there are a lot of 504 fans around eh? I thought I was only one of handful. To answer your questions, nope mine wasn't original diesel, the previous owner had converted it without swapping the gearbox (if you convert with swapping the gearbox, it's worthwhile to dump the car). The market value is entirely depend on the condition and how originality is kept and preserved, so anything between 50,000 to 1 mil is possible. I know of a 504 GR which has got offers more than 9.50 and he's not willing to sell it. Original diesels runs solid even in USA they used to batter them using vegi oil and still they runs fine to the date without re-builds. Only issue is the excessive sound and rough start. No matter how good the engine is, the starting is rough and requires some cranking, but once fire up it'll run even with cracked pistons, leaky gaskets (again battered examples from around the world).

parts for original diesel peugeots wasn't and isn't an issue as long as Mahindra diesels are around. The engine of the maxi truck is similar to the Peugeot diesel and some components including the pump, pistons, some bearings can be inter-changeable. The engine of the old mahindra jeep is exactly the same engine (Indenor diesel) came in 504 Diesel version.

will keep you posted about a good tinker fellow, apparently a 'golaya' fellow is there but he's a full time employee of peugeot agents as yet.

So was yours converted using a Peugeot / Mahindra diesel or a Toyota diesel engine ? Did the original AC still work when you bought it? I know some people have dumped 1C or 2C engines in Peugeot. The 504 is still manufactured in Iran I believe.

Sounds like an old Pegeot diesel is a statement commonly used to describe a rough sounding engine :) To be honest I prefer the petrol versions.

sadly it was a 1C engine but everything else was (even the clutch slave pump) I've reverted back to original. I was at the verge of re-fitting it with a 2L twin carb petrol engine. Bought an engine, overhauled completely and restored that engine to pristine condition with thermal paint on the block to have the original look of the engine. Couldn't complete the project and had sold all except that engine which is still with the mechanic, I don't know the current state of that engine even. A closed chapter that is.

504 is no more manufactured. It has been manufactured in Iran till mid 90's or so, in argentina till about 99, in Kenya and Nigeria till about 2008. The last manufactured 504 has been donated to Peugeot museum at Sochaux.

here is a picture of the last 504 to be ever built and the production line ran for 40+ years (starting from 1968)

You should take out a 2 litr twin carb and compare the power, stability, comfort all in one. The sooner you kick down the throttle you'll hear the wheezing sound of the engine and it lifts the 'nose' up and reaching 140 is nothing at all. :)

Well newcar says the car is his uncle's, and he and cousin is fixing it, and this chap claims the pics are his and he didn't authorize publication anywhere. I think. Confused sorta chap.

Well we'll leave it to Newcar to respond to that I guess ... But it never fails to surprise me how petty some people can be. Just like that moron, playboy who decided to come and have a cheap stab. I hope you've suspended the account.

Poor Newcar, who would want to start a restoration project with a chap like that :) If I was newcar, I will leave the car to this chap, buy another one and restore it and save myself the hassle !

I think your cousin is objecting to you posting pics or summin, but is not really going about it the right way. For one thing, he's gone and reported Harshan's post.

I was kinda confused after i read this how my cousin would do somethin stupid like this cuz he knows that i posted it up on autolanka but i still asked him he was like no it wasnt him, then i just figured it out that it was my cousins sister's son he was the one that was using my laptop yesterday, but still i dunt understand why he would do something stupid like this cause he got nothing to do with the car, this kid needs to grow up he just made himself stupid here N Harshan im really sorry for this stupid kid reported on u, but still ur the one thats really encouraging me for the restoration and he forgot to report most the autolanka members there also encouraging me for the resoration lol.

I've no idea about the places in Kandy. There are quite a few places in Panchikawatta whom has this. By the way if you can find something similar you can go for it, things like this need not be original to the dot.
