2011 Chevrolet Volt Hybrid is the world's most advanced production hybrid

(double the fuel economy of the Prius).

- Voted '2011 Car of the Year' and '2011 Automobile of the Year'

- Qualifies as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle.

- Can travel up to 80km on electric power alone (zero-emissions)

- 40km/liter (93mpg) rated fuel economy in regular driving.

- 53km/liter (126mpg) fuel economy recorded by Motor Trend.

- The world's first plug in hybrid. Can be plugged into an electrical wall outlet at home to recharge the battery when the car is off.

- The car Toyota said could not be built.

- The Volt is the world's most advanced hybrid car. It uses a unique hybrid drive system that is much more sophisticated than the hybrid systems used by other manufacturers. The Chevrolet Volt is actually an electric car that has a small petrol engine to power its electric drive unit if the battery's charge depletes while driving. The Volt's battery alone can power the electric motor for 80km before needing the petrol engine to turn on. So if the driver does a trip of 80kms or less, then the entire drive will be powered by the electric motor, and the petrol engine will stay off. As a result the Volt is driven by its electric motor for much more and for much longer than other hybrids resulting in much better fuel economy then any other hybrid.

If the VW XL1 has such a low drag coefficient and only 9hp needed to cruise at 100km/h, wonder what'd happen if someone fits that Lexus 5L V8 hybrid to that body biggrin.gif

And Hyundai has surely got a good lot of great designers recently, almost every model they put out seems to have some noticeable beauty, while Toyota is busy making econo box frogs on wheels after giving every designer they have to Lexus presumably

but i guess its each person's preference.

Doubt the 33kmpl would work when doing the 0-100kmph in 3 secs bit.... :D And I assume that would happen quite a lot.

That's a one great looking Porsche though. :)

Personal preference, yes :) Cuz I like that hybrid Sonata, especially the rear end. The Prius looks OK when on its own but looks outdated and looks like a pig/frog with it's back raised, especially in that pic with the Volt which looks like it came from Transformers/Star Trek or something. Don't like the Camry either, it looks quite bland and like an export 141 Corolla which we got here a lot for the permits.

Porsche, needless to say it's beautiful and more like a baby Carrera GT :D

And KIAs got Peter Schreyer. He's done a great job on the new designs. You should see some of their concepts!

Saw a Forte on the road the other day, and that looked really good!

Yeah got killer looks from the outside but the interior looks very plasticy and cheap :(

I too think the volt looks amazing. Wasn't it voted best car of the year on something or the other? I for one dont believe their interior is very plasticy or rather cheap. Its a common misconception mostly drawn by Jeromy Clarkson and top-gear, some of us who watch top-gear tend to believe whatever he says. But i do agree some cars are not up to standard, but not all of em in all fairness.

Compared to the Prius i think the VOLT is rather expensive, 2011 model starting price at $41,000!

More on the 40km/liter 2011 Chevrolet Volt Hybrid

- 80km range of lithium-ion battery. When the battery reaches a certain level of depletion at about 80km of driving, the petrol engine automatically turns on to power the electric drive unit as the battery recharges.

- Zero-emissions when the petrol engine is off and the car is being powered by the electric drive unit.

- 52.5gm/km CO2 emissions when the petrol engine is running. Qualifies as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle; just misses Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle rating.

- Electric drive unit produces 150hp/273lb-foot-torque. 1.4L petrol generator engine produces 80hp.
