  1. Hi Friends and Greetings for Holiday season. I am stepping down after 5+ years from my reliable Suzuki Swift 2003 (Jeep model) sold due to migrating plan. But plan is delayed. I don't want to spend a lot on a car due to current crisis. Required is basic relative comfort travel 15-20 km. Mostly reliable so you can go somewhere with confident even in night. Also no need of profit but need to be able to get rid of car at short notice+ easy maintenance. Budget prefer about 1.5M max go up to 2M but I want to go as cheap as possible. Also I really like to have auto gears manual if no choice at all. I have done some research and even check few cars here's my list please help with pro and con so make me not make a mistake. Nissan : For my budget Very good condition Trad Sunny is there. But 90% manual so not a fan. Very few auto ones - are they reliable? Then Doctor Sunny diesel is lot cheaper than petrol. Petrol I think overpriced. Why is diesel cheaper? Cars look good condition but people say Diesel Sunny is a lot of problems why? But still not auto but my budget gets me good condition cars. Few Auto gear cars are there as well. Wingroad Auto is there but 2 cars I checked are terrible state so I think most are like that. Good ones above 2 M Toyota: Everything is above 2 Million except for Wagons (18/19 dash) But Manual. And corolla and Corona (17/18 dash) both available Auto and same engine 5A according to a seller. Diesel Auto also available Reliable? Parts? Mitsubishi Honda very few for sale at the budget - Honda Grand Civic is there but a friend tells it's likely to have lot of issues and no one knows to fix it. Suzuki few random Cultus etc but worried about spares. Finally there's a LOT of Hyundai for this budget Sonata Elantra and Accent. Much newer and Auto+ Seems a good deal but what's the catch? A mechanic tells their difficult to fix. What do you think and suggestion friends? Should I conserve budget an go for a classic like Sunny Trad/Doctor and live in pain of manual drive in city? Are Hyundai risky? Or should I just stretch my budget to above 2 M and get a March K11 or a FB14??
  2. Guys I wanted to know what are the grades of the Starlet EP71? How do you differ them from each other and how to know which what’s the country of origin of it?

  4. Hi Guys! So you've probably seen me ask questions (relatively dumb ones tbh) regarding a Starlet EP91 and I decided to post some pictures here! Hopefully looking to make this a thread during its tenure with me. She's a Reflect F Limited model with a three speed auto and comes in the Toyota paint code "Super White" (Checked the serial number). English numbers and has done close to a 195k kms.
  5. Alert : This is not the awe-inspiring blog where a 60-year-old rare car gets restored. This, non-existent ladies, and gentlemen unfortunately is much much more mundane. So bear with me. Everyone needs a beater car - you could come up with many reasons why... but deep down another set of wheels is such an alluring prospect. Time to time it feels so good to keep your daily with all its techie bits aside and just rattle down the lane in a simple box on wheels with just a speedometer. Three years ago me and my father bought a 1972 Datsun (B110) and since I was broke then and had no space in my house which was being built it fell upon my father to fund it and keep it in his garage with his Beetle. I drove it on the weekends for short distance trips and let me tell you that car was fun to drive. However, cars of that vintage need a lot of TLC. It's not a beater car at all and you need to develop a bond with the car to keep it running - you have to know exactly how much gas it needs to stop it from stalling and when and when not to use the choke (yeah choke....remember?) So clearly it's not the type of car that you can throw the keys to a close friend (yeah I'm a little picky when sharing the car keys) OR even the wife (who by the way is quite a competent driver) and expect them to figure out to drive it in case of an emergency. I've always had a soft spot for the boxy little cars from the 1980's - you can read about that infatuation here. Under these circumstances I decided to save up a bit and get myself a beater car from the 80's .Given that I have little parking space under a tree in the garden(the Civic sits in the garage) my choices were limited to hatches. In a sense the 80's was a decade where hatches gained popularity so a 80's hatch was an ideal retro-relic that would double up as a reliable beater car. My budget was quite limited ~500,000 I was ok with a car with a bit of work to do and . The most tempting option was to go for the definitive hot hatch : a Golf and I entertained this idea for quite a while and did a fair bit of research. The other temptation was to go for a Fiat Uno. However, all the research I did gave me doubts. Golf's at that budget were disasters waiting to happen and the Fiat - as much as I loved it (one of my first die casts was a Bburago Fiat Uno and as a result I grew up loving Fiat Uno’s) didn't seem a very practical option unless I was really really into it : I'm talking about "Get on an illegal immigrant boat from Negombo and swim the last 100 miles to Napoli and walk to Turin and steal parts from a Mafioso's uncles Fiat" level dedication - since I can't swim anyway I gave up on that too and shelved these ideas under 'When I grow up'. By now Japanese flags were appearing in my mind and some usual suspects came up - Toyota Starlet EP71, Corolla2/Tercel, Nissan March K10 and Daihatsu Charade G11 .Yes the Honda fanboy in me screamed 'Civic' but Civic hatches are rare and unmolested ones are even rarer. One look at the Civic hatches for that budget with their garish Nilkamal plastic mods and hideous color combinations (that only a guy who smokes too much KG and listens to bus-Ajith can think of ) gives you cholera that screams 'Hondaaa' when it exits your body. So, I eventually narrowed down to basically 4 models and the hunt began. As usual the Toyota’s were overpriced and the only EP71 within my budget was mysterious car that had some work to be done but had the YOM as 1981 (the first EP71 rolled off in 1984) and the Corolla2/Tercels were well beyond budget. At the same time, I’d been floating the idea of an engine swap and having read a few threads on 4EFTE swaps on Charades and March K10’s in Pakistani and British forums I started focusing on them. After many weeks and many futile trips, (and weird encounters - including a persistent and scantily clad lady insisting I wait till her husband comes and make an offer for a car that was on the verge of collapsing into a pile of rust and a small child beating a poor Charade while I was inspecting it with a wooden stick until the flaky paint started coming off ) I realized these once-honest hard working engines were basically gasping for life. Then April 21st happened, and things were put on hold for a few weeks. I continued to do more research on engines, repairing, parts availability as well as engine swapping along with my friend and realized that the easiest 80’s Jap hatch to live with will be from Toyota AND when and if I wanted to do an engine swap it would be relatively painless putting in a Toyota Engine that was easily found. As for the budget well – it was a bit above budget ( dad came to the rescue). In September 2019 I ended up with this – a Toyota Starlet EP71 from 1985 registered in 1989 with a fake Soleil badge. There were various grades for the EP71 and judging by the equipment of this car I'd place it at either XL or DX however the DX had Fender Mounted Mirrors so unless someone installed door mounted Mirros on a DX the car was probably an XL. The A/C worked, there was some minor rust issues, and the suspension apparently needed a bit of attention, The interior while not pristine was acceptable and just like that I had my beater car which was a little bit older than me. So how was the ride? – The car is quite light and for a car without power steering it’s extremely maneuverable. The driving position is low and quite nice. There was a few rattling bits here and there expectedly, and the breaks were rather weak. The 35-year-old 2E was quite tired by now and to be honest when you must keep coaxing it to keep going like asking an asthma patient to keep breathing well it’s not that enjoyable. At the same time the car developed a very specific issue : The car would start without fail every morning – BUT once you drive somewhere and switch off the engine it would not start for an hour. Keep it for an hour then it starts again and runs well for the whole day. Basically, the second start will not happen sooner than one hour after the first start of the day. I had to arrange my timetables accordingly! By December I was running out of patience with the 2E and at the same time I’d been yearning to put in a 4EFTE as it seemed quite straightforward. However, Recon 4EFTE’s from Japan were now going for 250,000 and having spent more than intended already on the car I was already on a very tight budget. Ok that was too long for the first part – I’ll get back with another post on the mechanical mods done on the car to date. Ciao! Here's a few pics of the car from last year:
  6. Dear Expert, I am driving Toyota Starlet EP 91 around 2.5 years . Clock says running millage 170K +. From few weeks I face gear shifting difficulty. This is very prominent when starting the car, gear is very tight to move, even when Clutch paddle fully . Then gradually it become normal. Some times even when driving shifting gear to 1st is tough. feel gear leaver hit something inside. ( this problem arise more than 6 months) For info, my clutch is in far more bottom end of the paddle ( clutch releasing point) , my friend says driving my car is difficult due to this. but im used to it not face big difficult to drive. Paddle has lot of free movement. What is the reason for this ? What are the things need to do for rectify this ? What are the good practices overcome this kind of issue ? - Is there any good, reliable garage in Kandy to do this repair. ( specially around Katugastota). Pls share your views Thank you regards Amila
  7. Can someone give me a good comparison of these cars? (Engines , which transmission is better , fuel economy , reliability , interior space etc....) I'm not sure if they're in the same league but I like both of them. I couldn't find any thread about 206..
  8. My vehicle is starlet EP82(petrol) , when brakes applied rpm drops by 200 , as this has been inspected by a gentlemen in this forum, there is a vacuum leak in brakes, is there any recommended place to check this and corrected. Highly appreciate any lead on this matter.
  9. Hi, This is my first post in this forum, but I do read the forum often for expert's ideas and gathered a lot about cars. Here is the situation. My car is a Toyota starlet ep91 1996 reflect f full option with Auto I temporary got to use a starlet ep91 which belongs to one of my relations, which is 1997 full option 5 forward manual. Driving for about 2 weeks I absolutely fell in love with the car, runs like a whistle. Rather than that, it has some options like removable headrest seats, retractable mirrors, full length center console, and exterior and interior in good condition. I asked him if he likes to exchange the car with mine so he is asking my car and another 200000k. Do you guys think if this is a good deal? your feedback is appreciated. Thank you.
  10. So here's some documentation of a bit of DIY I did some months ago. The driver's side window motor fried itself, along with the automatic mechanism and a hardwired fuse on the PCB. It didn't occur to me to properly document this at the time, because I was pressed for time, so the photos were taken mainly for my reference. Cleaning the power window contacts is something everyone should do on a 20 year or older vehicle. The amount of carbon build up on the contacts is insane. I ended up disabling the automatic mechanism because I believe the thermal cutout it uses to no longer be reliable. The post is short, so feel free to ask for specifics since there are many.

  13. i have a toyota starlet 1996 and i hope to sell it buy a new one. I am interested with kia rio and hyundai. The main reason is i need a relatively new car (as 2005 ) rather than using 90 decades car. I know most people says japanees cars far better. But i like to use relatively new car and my budget is less than 1.8M. pls tell me what is the best choice for me.
  14. Update : Bought a starlet. Details see the thread. Hi fellows. My question is a big and like a question paper but hope it will help you to give me a good answer. My requirements are Manual gear car with good fuel economy. budget around 1.1-1.4 and max 1.65 A good resale value. not sure how long Im going to keep it. Maybe from 3 to 5+ years I prefer diesels because we own a townace lotto van (57-xxxx) in our family for about 10years now. Did a full engine overhaul about 8 years back@ edirisinhas and still no any problem. I don't want a fast car and ok with the town-ace like performance and feel. Don't care about boot space but leg space will be needed. Prefer hatchbacks but sedans are too ok. My monthly traveling will be bellow 500km but if its good for pocket will do more. I've read over 2,3 times the threads that talks about above models in topics. But i need more to decide.
  15. Hi guys, Hope everyones keeping well. The reason for this post is, I got a two door Starlet NP90 diesel with an engine running slighlty under compression. I still should be able to use it sometime but if ever I decide on replacing the engine, is there a possiblity for me to go for a Turbo Diesel engine? Would you recommend this and has anyone of you done this before? what might be my best swap option and what might be the cost? Also, I've seen some starlets with ABS. My car doesn't have ABS but the wire harness which connects to the ABS unit under the bonnet is here. Is there any possiblity of enabling ABS? Thanks in advance!
