  1. Dear friends These days octane 95 is Rs.464.00 and 92 is 366.00. Such a big difference. One of my friend is having a local agent imported Peugeot 3008 and he Is using 92 for TWO years without any issue (without any additives). Also, a Peugeot garage owner (who had worked at local agent earlier) told me that 92 is ok for local agent version while UK vesion will get damaged by 92. (May be due to compression ratio difference in cars made for UK and South Asian region) If you have a 3008 / 5008 imported by local agent and if you use octane 92, can you please share your experience (for how long you are using and are there any engine issues etc.) UK 3008 / 5008 owners, if you use 92, can you please share your experience as well.
  2. Looks like I seem to have taken over the title to the only active member with Peugeots. Honourable mention @AVANTE. Hopefully did not miss anyone else. Peugeot offers good value for money and are loaded with toys. but regular maintenance is required and sometimes can be pricey. Very nice to drive safe cars. Not for faint hearted as these do like to throw issues. Mostly electronic issues, which turn out to be easy cheap fixes. but time and expertise is required. NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR A 121/ALLION OWNER LOOKING TO GET "PRESTIGE" ON A BUDGET. SORRY Since I'm bored, I decided to make a comprehensive study on the French fry AKA Peugeot. Covering Peugeots from the 90s to current models. Mainly talked about are 206,406,407,508,3008,5008 as these are common cars for us. Let's start with the Negatives first. Posting in table format for easy reference. PRICES ARE IN LKR AND BASED ON SRI LANKAN RATES AT THE MOMENT. WILL BE CHEAPER OVERSEAS. I will make edits or changes with time if required. I do not take responsibility on anything and claim to be an expert. Compiled from experience and help from Peugeot Technicians. Some of these negatives apply to all Euros and even some modern Japs. Negatives Fixes and avoidance guide Average cost 1 Electronics are questionable Biggest let down. Come to think of it, All euro cars have rubbish electronics. Will leave you stranded more than once if you don't rectify asap. had to learn the hard way. At least the wires don't melt like my Alfa 156. tops at around 100k 2 Complex suspension Good handling and comfy. But like all euros they are expensive and complex. Ride smooth. Slow down for pot holes/bumps. 407 had some fancy suspension and was known to wear out faster. 150k to 500k 3 Interior dislikes hot climate Get good quality tinted(50K) done. Use a windscreen shade when parked. Avoid parking under direct sunlight for extended periods. Replacement parts are actually very cheap. Unlike bmw spares, that cost the sky and melt if you even stare too hard. 50k 4 parts are expensive depending on the location and accessibility In Sri Lanka parts are often more costly and bit low in stock. Malaysia & Dubai stock for cheap. Ali Express.com has OEM parts for cheap with shipping to Sri Lanka. 5 Needs specialised technicians Like all euro cars. Everyday bush mechanics do more harm than good. Company is subpar in Sri Lanka. Prices can be a hit or miss from them. 6 Engines from BMW MINI (Prince THP) are troublesome Fun and very rev happy. sounds good. can do anything from 4kmpl to 15kmpl depending on the driver. Best avoided. If buying. Make sure engine has been overhauled with the corrected parts. HP fuel pump/injectors are known to fail also. Injectors-35k. HP pump-250k. Overhaul cost-400k plus 7 AL4 gearboxes are troublesome. Solenoids are known to fail. Not too hard a fix. Expertise needed. Regular preventive maintenance is key to no issues. 50k 8 Paint can be hit or miss Paint can fade/bubble over time. Rust is also sometimes found. Garage usage is advisable. Company rates are ok. But needs to be micromanaged 16k to 400k 9 Periodic timely maintenance is a must (not a negative, but Lankans think it is) Maintenance must be done on time. Cannot leave behind for later. Esp 5w30 Oil is expensive in Sri Lanka for unfathomable reason. Older cars can use regular synthetic oil and full service cost is on par with japs. Filters are cheap and plentiful. Oil can be bought cheaper overseas. 10k-175k for full service in Sri Lanka Includes gear/brake/coolant fluid change 10 3rd party spare are not common Cheap non oem parts are hard to find and easily perishable. Advice not to use non oem parts. 11 1.2 pure tech engines issues Powerful and fun. Sound good. Will be worn out faster because turbo & small engine works harder than higher capacity engine. This is relevant to all small turbo engines from any manufacturer. Will need overhaul by 200k. ALSO SOME ENGINES HAD TO BE OVERHAULED AROUND 30K DUE TO DESIGN FAULT. DONE FREE AT AGENT UNDER WARRANTY. MAKE SURE THIS WAS DONE BEFORE PURCHASE. 500K UPWARDS 12 3008/5008 Power steering rack Was changed free at agent under warranty. Was partly due to bad driving/roads. CHECK BEFORE PURCHASE 250k upwards RUNNING REPAIRS AND SUCH. Very similar in price to other brands. THIS TABLE IS ACTUALLY FOR 1ST TIME PEUGEOT BUYERS. PRICES ARE NOT SCARY AS THEY SAY. WILL ALSO HELP 206,406,407 OWNERS NO DOUBT. Intervals have been posted after getting recommendations from several experts who work on PEUGEOT. Intervals may vary and should use caution always. May have missed some. This table is for Peugeots from the 90s onward. Part/s Price (LKR) Interval (KMs or time) Advisory TIRES 20k to 75k Depends on tire. Usually 45k kms. Tires cost the same as other Japs & Euros. Use softer tire because suspension can be damaged with hard tires. Dunlops are a good balance between price and quality. Brake pads 7k to 20k Last long really. Usually every 40k kms. Available from 3rd party junk to brembos. My 508 cost 16k a pair in todays prices.oem. not bad at all. 406 and them still cost under 10k. Depends on driving habits. Brake discs 10k to 60k Same as above Unless a stone or something scratches the discs, they last long and don’t screech. Of-couse brakes depend on the driving habits. Any Filter 2k to 5k Every 10k for oil filter. Cabin/Fuel filter every 20k or as advised. Easily found. AUTOGear oil 25k-100k Older pugs I’d say at least every 25k. Newer pugs say lifetime but I’d say every 40k -80k to be sure. Overseas it’s 20K MILES for older pugs and 50-80K MILES for newer. But in Lanka better change bit earlier because of harsh conditions. Lifetime oil is bs. Newer pugs need 4 Litres of gear oil that cost about 80k. Engine oil (older pugs) 10k- 20k For older non turbo cars. every 10k if synthetic or 5k for mineral oil. Cost the same as an average car. No any special recomendations. Engine oil (newer pugs) 50k average 508,3008,5008 and other newer models. Every 10k. Please do this ritually or you will have problems. Esp 5w 30 is recommended. But please check with agent/ booklet to make sure. Mobil 1 or Total is recommended. AC GAS 10k to 75k Re-gas as neccesary. or check every 2 years. R-134A (or HFC-134a) for most cars before 2016. Cost peanuts to gas. The post 2016 onwards it was mainly R-1234YF (or HFO-1234yf) gas. Now that’s expensive. About 50k usually. Check under hood to confirm type. This Is also the same as any brand. Clutch @AVANTE I need help on this Brake fluid 5k Every 2-3 years is what’s followed in Lanka. So far no horror stories. If you use brakes a lot due to racing or traffic. Better go case by case basis. COOLANT 25k max Every 5 years. Almost never changed in Lanka. Some might change even sooner. Water is not ok. Use a reputed brand. STR sold in supermarkets is water with green dye. Ask me how I know. SPARK PLUGS 2k to 6k each Pug recommends 45K kms. Can attest to that. Cleaning and checking won’t hurt I’d say. Ignition Coils 10k upwards each Check every 20k. Lankans change when busted only. Usually can run for 5 years. Buy and keep from overseas as is very cheap there. Battery 40k to 125k Battery prices are crazy now. Used to be half this. I’d say with prices now, run it dry. Don’t let that mfr die. Expensive af. My 508 cost me 68k for a new brand. Amazon is about 90k. Shock absorbers. 15k to 45k Inspection is the best identifier Wide variety. Can even be rebuilt which I don’t prefer. But not too bad really. Axle oil seals 25k leaks gear oil. common issue after about 10 years. easy fix needs some disassembly to fix. so better to use qualified technician. to be updated. ( WARMLY WELCOME TO ALL COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS, CRITICISM ETC. 😊 )
  3. Hi Everyone, Can anyone recommend a good garage for repairs (parts replacement) for Peugeot 3008. Thanks.
  4. I have a Peugeot 307 1.6 from 2003, the power steering is electrical and it has stopped working, any help much appreciated.
  5. Hi guys! I need to top up my PS fluid by a few mililitres. However, I have no clue what brand of PS fluid the previous owner used. But Im sure it's most probably Dexron 2 grade fluid (as recommended by the manual). Now if I mix a different brand dexron 2 fluid with this, will there be an issue? Eg:- Mixing Castrol brand D2 with STR brand D2 Its for the Peugeot 406, equipped with a mechanical power steering pump.
  6. Dear Friends I have a Peugeot 3008 purchased from Local Agent, Car Mart. It has Idle Stop / Start function. I used to disable it every time. (It is enabled by default). What is your recommendation, whether to keep it On of Off. 1. In Heavy traffics 2. In Light traffics Thanks in advance.
  7. Guys, I am planning to upgrade from my manual EK3, and am looking at buying an aqua, as it suits my budget and other requirements. My biggest concern is the battery. There are some adds saying battery 100% and some saying battery has been replaced. How should I check the battery? Is it a big concern? Anything else to check when buying a used hybrid vehicle? I would value other recommendations as well. Although I would prefer a manual, I have to settle for an auto due to family concerns. Budget is 3 - 3.5M. Prefer a sedan, but a hatch with reasonable space is OK, but prefer to avoid very small ones like the wagonR, etc. Will be driving mostly on colombo city traffic, with occasional long trips. Something reliable as my wife will also be using it. I would also like to have some power under the hood and driving pleasure, but I know I might have to compromise on that due to other requirements and comittements. Fuel efficiency is not a big concern, but a good efficiency is most welcome. Resale value is also a minor concern as I will only be using it for 1.5yrs max. Appreciate if you guys could help me, as you always have!
  8. I'm considering VW Golf or Peugeot 307. YOM would be 2007 or 8. would like some help to understand if there are any specific things to look when buying one and again if there are any factory faults in these models? I know the 307 autos had a gearbox issue. but I'm looking for a manual option. any help would be appreciated. BMW 320i (YOM 2005/6) is also an option. any thoughts on that as well compared to the VW and Pug??

  13. Hi Friends I am interested in buying a Peugeot 306 XR car. The price is around 1.25 Million and there are some issues with the vehicle. 1. AC leak - not checked yet. 2. CV joint problem This seems to be a good comfortable vehicle for this budget. That's why it took my attention. But I need some expert advice about the vehicle generally. More specifically about the spare parts availability and cost. Fuel efficiency is also concerned. Thanks for reading. Niraj
  14. Hi all, I actually got a sub-woofer fixed to my 20-year-old car (Peugeot 406 d8) today from a professional auto-shop and I"m wondering whether this would mess up the car in the near future? As a note I would like to mention that, the worker who fixed this connected the amp, to the car battery. Just wanted to know, whether it would cause any huge issues as an overall, to the car or it's wiring system? Thanks.
  15. Hi, I'm a newbie out here, so please do bare with my mismatches. I'm running a Peugeot 406 (1998) at the moment, and I"m trying to insert a proper audio set with a display (inclusive of the reverse cam). I would love to have all sorts of new features in the audio player such as playing songs via bluetooth, or from my iOS etc. Some of my friends suggested me to go with Sun Lanka or Pet#o. I'd highly appreciate if you'll could suggest me a good place where I can get this done within a day with a reasonable amount. Thanks.

Hi Guys, Is it worth buying a 406, YOM 2002, 185,000 milage, 2000CC, manual transmission car for Rs.1.9Mn (GO-XXXX).? I have seen the car in an Advert. Look perfectly good.
  17. Hi guys, I am hunting for Peugeot 504 and got 2 cars. One is a GL one and other is L. I didn't see L version anywhere but the GL. This is the only L version I found. I am confused with these two versions. The L version has it's own AC system where GL doesn't have and currently hang on type is attached to front. Could you guys help me decide which one to buy based on, Parts availability on L version compared to GL because I like the L Version Dashboard. The L version doesn't have rear disc brakes but GL does. Thanks and appreciate your replies.

  19. In Sri Lanka, 2nd hand market of European cars is very poor. Like to know the reasons and have a good conversation for the awareness of all who are interested. Thank you.
  20. Do you recommend the body repair services at Carmart Workshop Ratmalana? I consider the quality of work and honesty. They said that we do not need to pay the repair bills from private account of customers, they'll handle all insurance claims. If anybody has experience with Carmart body repair workshop please share your information or else where do you recommend for Peugeot accident repairs (body panels)?
  21. Hi folks, Someone inform me about the cruise control option in Peugeot 406.
  22. Hi Guys, I'm interested to buy a used Peugeot car with following specification. Model: Peugeot 406 Executive Year of Manufactured: 2000 Mileage: 200000km Fuel: Petrol Transmission: Automatic AL4 What are the Pros and Cons of this car? What about the fuel consumption of this car? (for city limits and specially long distance?) What about the maintenance cost? (Services, Parts) I have heard some forums that the AL4 gearbox in not reliable. But the current owner of this car said he never got any issues with the gearbox so far. Is AL4 gearboxes are improved in 2000 model cars? If I got any issues in future is that possible to easily repair it? What about the repair cost? My intention to use this car for daily office usage and weekend long trips. I prefer 406 because of its comfortable and handling. Could anyone advice me? Based on your suggestion I can make a decision :D.
  23. Hi Automobiles or cars as we used call them, has long become a commodity and are now mass produced trade items that aims to fulfill the automotive requirements of contemporary human beings, whose day to day routines IMHO, are much more sophisticated now and reflect the chaotic and busy social, economic aspects of modern societies. Due to such scenario, most of us has lost certain feel good factor and innocence that we had when we were growing up (applies more to people who have grown up in 80's and 90's). IMHO, the cars themselves too, whilst become state-of-the-art and technologically revolutionary by every passing year, has lost a certain character and enthusiasts who love cars manufactured in 90's or early 00's, may agree that, their cars has such personality and character, that most modern cars (even the current models of their favorite make) lacks and thus continues to TLC their cars with great dedication and soul. IMHO, For example, a BMW car manufactured in 90's (or early 00's) has such a timeless design aesthetics and driving a well maintained car will give the impression that, people who made that car has such attention to detail, workmanship, passion and are mostly assembled in original factory of the maker. Now a modern BMW for example is mostly put together by robots and are mass-produced items in countries like India or china (no offense to the countries) and during recent ride in a 2015 5 series, I got the impression that, whilst the Car is modern looking and dripping with latest technologies, it lacked that certain character that old ones had and I got the impression that some of the materials used in the new car may not be durable as the ones in older cars. No I cannot afford a 2015 BMW for the time being I do not intent to discourage anyone from buying one. Also I do not intent to undervalue the brilliant tech or modern aspects of new cars, However, my heart always races when i see a mint condition older car (exclusively euro car as I am an euro car enthusiast) on the roads and I don't get the same excitement when I see modern cars. It may be just me or do you also happens to have same feelings for 90's cars. Sound off in comments below Cheers,
  24. Hi, Gentlemen and ladies (if there any) I currently own a S Type Jaguar (2000 model year), which is a great machine that has very unique and distinctive looks and loads of road presence, specially where I live most of the time (outside the Colombo). However, I have been thinking of trading my Jag to one of the following models. 1. BMW E38 - 740iL preferably (1998-2001) - used to be a dream car for me and still is to some extent, very rare to find. 2. BMW E39 - 525i, 530i preferably (2001-2003) - not sure if this will be a downgrade from my S type Jag in terms of looks, sheer road presence and power. 3. BMW E60 5 Series - (2003-2006) - Nice car, not many on classifieds like the F10 5 Series 4. Jaguar XJ (X350) - (2003-2007) - The big brother to my S Type. Amazing looks, expensive and very rare. 5. Audi A6 (C5) - (2000 - 2003) - also, not sure if this will be a downgrade from my S type Jag in terms of looks, sheer road presence and power. 6. Merc W211 E Class ( 2002 - 2005) - Looks elegant, may not be a bang for the buck due to high demand for Mercs in SL Since I am used to fuel consumption, parts availability and maintenance cost of premium euro's, I humbly request from you to guide on on, 1. What kind of improvements that each model will offer in comparison to my S Type Jag ? 2. Can you point out a mint condition E38 (long wheel base LCI), E39, E60, XJ - X350 that is intended for trade / sale ? 3. Other general advice ? Thanking you for your precious time.. Kal-El
  25. My father is obsessed with Toyota and all the Japanese cars. But is it that hard to maintain a Peugeot 406? Is there a significant difference between Peugeot 406 parts and Corolla 110 spares? I don't understand what's wrong with europ cars second hand market value in Sri Lanka.
