  1. Guys, I'm planning to buy a diesel car for daily travel since my employer is more accessible to diesel than petrol. That's the sole reason. Concern is my limited budget which is 3Mn so I have to settle for cars older than 20 yrs. What are reliable option among the below cars. I want a car with less trouble, If I need to waste time frequently at garages I would rather stay in petrol queues. 1.Starlet NP90 - I'm a fan of starlet since the day I got in to cars though I've never owned one. But heard the smaller diesel engines are not that reliable compared to the 2000 cc ones. 2.CE110 - A you won't go wrong car in SL context. 3.SB14 guess this the diesel version of FB14. Would be the last choice 4. Carina Diesel - bit rare. Would consider buying over CE110 I have been a Honda user since the 1st car. So have zero knowledge in toyota or Nissan variants and I want the members advice on the cons of buying a 20yr old diesel cars.
  2. Hello Friends, I have found this forum useful with my Corolla DX KE72. Now I am thinking of an upgrade. One of my relatives owns a Corolla CE110, 1998, Diesel. Auto transmission and he is the first owner. Seems to be in good condition. I going for a test run tomorrow. I would like to get your kind expert opinion about it. vehicle is registered as 65- (can that be, as English numbers were started by 1997 or so)? What should I look when I test this vehicle? My mechanic told me about first heat start, to take oil gauge out while the engine is running and check for any splashes of oil. My other question is, that I have not seen a lot of adverts on this model on care sale websites? is that a sign of poor second hand market or otherwise that who owns it does not want to sell? Your responses are much appreciated. Cheers H

  4. Update : Bought a starlet. Details see the thread. Hi fellows. My question is a big and like a question paper but hope it will help you to give me a good answer. My requirements are Manual gear car with good fuel economy. budget around 1.1-1.4 and max 1.65 A good resale value. not sure how long Im going to keep it. Maybe from 3 to 5+ years I prefer diesels because we own a townace lotto van (57-xxxx) in our family for about 10years now. Did a full engine overhaul about 8 years back@ edirisinhas and still no any problem. I don't want a fast car and ok with the town-ace like performance and feel. Don't care about boot space but leg space will be needed. Prefer hatchbacks but sedans are too ok. My monthly traveling will be bellow 500km but if its good for pocket will do more. I've read over 2,3 times the threads that talks about above models in topics. But i need more to decide.
  5. I had to face difficulty in starting up my CE110 (Diesel) at hill country early in the morning. Details of my car as follows; it is CE110 (YOM1998), Auto, ODO 171000km, car can be starting up in the morning without any pre-heating up, no black smoke in normal driving conditions, slight noticeable engine oil reduction for 1000~1500km, slight fume from dipstick but not spurting engine oil even at higher rev. so I agree that engine is bit under compressed. Story as follows, I reached to Bandarawela at evening without any issues and tried to start up around 9am (~temp 20C); starter motor rev very well (Battery is good) but engine not coming in to life! I checked to injector pump solenoid valve and it was working I just pumped up manual pump located in diesel filter but had no luck. I removed the drain plug underneath the diesel filter and drained it (not sure it had water). Then removed the the bolt at injector pump and pushed the manual pump at diesel filter and diesel is spurting up. I loosen the diesel line where it fix to the engine and rev the starter motor and I could see the diesel coming from the line. After all those efforts I failed while the battery too drained up after several efforts of staring up! I decided to get down a mechanic, and he asked what I did and then just did a jump start from another battery Engine came to the life only after several efforts (second batt too drained up and needed 3rd batt). He said this is due to worn engine and battery drained up due to several efforts of starting up. So my questions are, 1. Is it due to worn engine? (I can still start up without any heating and the following day morning at the same place it stated up easily) 2.Is it due to diesel problem? (water in diesel/clogged diesel line/air in diesel line )- this is because I noticed diesel coming out from the diesel line which goes out from the filter while pressing up hand pump due to hardened rubber pipe so it may have sucked up air as well 3. I was pretty sure that my battery was in good condition and it failed only after 15~20 efforts of staring up
