  1. Hi All, Wanted to know if it is possible in SL to change the vehicle (sell) but retain the number plate to be used on a new vehicle of the same type ( ex. from old car to New car). I know this is possible in other countries which is swapping plates between old and new vehicles as the plate is registered to the owner and not the car. my number plate is nothing special, but just nostalgic and I would like to retain it if and when I change the vehicle, if its possible to keep. Thanking eveyone for your comments.
  2. Thanks for your reply. The route you suggest is wonderful but a bit too long for my friends to do. We hope to do one trip Colombo-Dambulla/Sigiriya (may be stay a night around there) - and return to Colombo. We hope to travel via the Colombo /Kandy road (A1) and then Kurunegala to Dambulla. Another day trip to Pinnawala-Ambakke Devalaya and the temples close by-Peradeniya Gardens -Kandy and back. We have still not decided where would be best to go to in the South, so all options are open for discussion . Galle is good for the history and a walk about, but would like to go to a place where there is a good beach to relax and a safe sea like Unawatuna, any other suggestions ?
  3. Hi freinds, This question is not about automotives, but since it relates to travelling and getting about using transport I hope it's ok to ask. I am in the process of planning a travel itinary for a few friends of the family who would be visiting Sri Lanka in April 2014. We are planning on doing a bit of travelling around to show them our beautiful isalnd, and planning to visit Pinnawala, Kandy, Dambulla/Sigiriya and a trip down South which seems like Galle, Benthotha or some place nice with a beach. We would like to stop for meals and a bit of rest while on the road and would love to know best places to stop for breakest, lunch or dinner which are clean, good service, respectable and not too expensive, which also have clean washroom/toilet facilities specially for the ladies. Any suggestions on other locations that would be of interest to visit inbetween the places above will be very helpful. All suggestions and advise is welcome. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
  4. Thanks guys for all the advice which i will remember before parking the car, will have fight with a few rats who occasionaly seems to be visiting the garrage :-(
  5. I would be parking my Car in a closed garrage for 2-3 months (with a short run 1 or 2 times a month) as I would be travelling. Would appreciate if some advice could be provided by the AL memebrs on what should be done to keep the vehicle in good order while its parked. Also would like to know from where I could purchase a Steering Lock (the one that fits on the Steerng wheel) for the car. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  6. Thanks everybody for all the suggestions. My thoughts were for a Toyota 121, Yaris, Belta or the SX4 (heard that its not too economic on fuel). would have loved to get a Pajero but that seems not to be that economic, I may be wrong? But since the suggestions have so many models will take a closer look at all before I finally decide. Thanks again, you guys at Autolanka are a real help.
  7. I am looking to purchase a car with a budget around 3 Million. The car will mostly be used for running around Colombo and the occasional out of Colombo /outstation family trips. I am looking for a economical / easy to maintain and durable car for home use, not a sports or fast car (yes, I realise with this budget they would be out of my range ). I am new to the local market and not familier with the current prices, Would appreciate all comments and suggestions from my respected friends of Autolanka. Warm regards to all.
  8. Thank you everyone for your commemnts and suggestions. It's all appreciate very much. Now with the fuel price hike, it seems like we will end up with a bicycle or better walking from A to B !!
  9. Yes, it is a vey interesting subjact and it give you a better picture of what's happening in the world around us than what shown on our local channels. Sorry, to say but the local channels don't cover any international news, they run thought the int'l. news in 60 sec's like the larger world does not matter to us in Sri Lanka. I think we should be more knowledgeable about whats going on, and I just cannot understand why we still are 20-30 yrs backwards when it comes to integreting with the rest of the world on the technological front.

  11. Just want to know, has anyone being able to put up a SAT Dish with a decorder and catch any of the free international channels that are being transmitted via the satellite? Surely SL must be in the range of a foot print from many satellites. Would love to know.
  12. Thank's a lot for the information. It is really helpful.
  13. Agree with your comment. If all the 1300cc's are that bad than how come Maruti 800 is the number the no. 1 new car seller in Sri Lanka?
  14. Is that the Brand New price of Registered vehicle price??
  15. You may be right, but not many choices when your budget is limited.
  16. Thank's. It's just that the price looked good for the budget I have and also it is brand new. I don't know if there are any recon vehicles, as it is manuafctures in Indonesia. Anyway, thank you for your comments & suggestions.
  17. Hi Everyone, I am looking into buying a vehicle for the first time and it will be used 100% for home and family runing around & trips when ever possible. We have seen the Toyota Avenza MPV running around Colombo and are interested in it. I know you car lovers are asking why??? but as I said it's for home use please stay cool. I Would love to hear any Good/Bad comments or suggestion about the vehicle before we decide to purchase same. As the vehicle seems to be new in our country, its been hard to find any references. If there is anyone who has used the vehicle or ownes one please let me know your true feel about this vehicle. Thanks & warm wishes.
  18. Ok, that's where I think many said it will be connecting to the Highlevel road. So it seems that there will be a new road from there to colombo instead of using the Highlevel, now thats makes sense. I hope they progress fast and we have a better country to maintain and up keep these roads as they will be of no use if they are not maintained, see whats happened to most of the other Main roads in the country, specially the roads closer to Colombo that carry a bluk of the traffic. Thank for the googlearth link it was very informative. Cannot wait till they finish the road to make a trip on it and be able to see a bit more of this wonderful island.
  19. As far as I heard the highlevel road joins this road at some point past Kottawa. Please could someone let me know exactly where it joins the highlevel road, as I have heard so many locations that I am confused. Also if you used this road and traveled from the South coming to Colombo do you have to travel on Highlevel after you got to Kottawa or is there an alternate route in the planning? If its via the Highlevel road people will take 1 1/2 hrs on the new road and another 2 1/2 on the Highlevel road and it would not make that much of a difference. I have seen the overhead bridge at the Pannipitiya Railway Station been under construction for over 10 years and now once again after many moons work seems to have started. Does anyone know when this is planned to be completed ? as the Kottwa to Borralla road is in such a bad condition that only if this bridge is made it seems that the road will be paved. This is a much faster way of getting to Colombo than using the Highlevel which goes through so many congested city centers. Hope sense prevails and work is completed without any stops.
  20. Thank you Guy's, I see the best thing to do is getting a lawyer to handle the matter and it would be smooth. Will do that, thanks again for the advise.
  21. Hi All, Please could somebody advise me the process in getting a copy of a Land Deed and where I should go to apply for such a document. Does this have to be done through a lawyer or do I have to visit some ministry to get same. The matter is that My betterhalf has inherited a small block of land and the deed seems to be missing. The relations do not know who has the deeds and the matter keeps dragging as is always the case with land matters. Any advise will be much appreciated. Thank you.
  22. I don't understand why the Gov. does not promote the use of Solar power in Colombo and other populated cities when the country is spending so much on producing electricity. Sometime ago when I had interest in installing some panels at home the cost of the panels were so expensive that only the really rich or someone without a electrical connection would want to pay those prices. Some solar powered street lights (between Palewatta & Thalawathugoda) have been installed, but that project also seems to have died after that. I was told that the cost if because of the Tax on the panels ( everything is taxed to the limit so it did not surprise me). Recenly I was having a chat with a guy from Buththala and they had installled some panels at his home as the chance of electricity coming to his town is so remote, and he mentioned that they spent about Rs 40,000 for the panel, wireing and the battery. This is a big amount for poor farmers to pay even on installment basis. I think the panels are much cheaper in India and if the Tax is taken away it will be widely used even in Urban Sri Lanka.
