I think you dont need a driving license but you will need registration, insurance and revenue license for your 49cc motorbike.

If you have a temporary license paper, you can see it says "motorcycles 100cc <" meaning anything over 100 needs a driving license. Best ask the Police or DMT regarding this.

  2. Did a camping tour to Hulangala on Sunday, its amazing how far the small Alto will take you where some so called SUV's bottom out.

Considering indian roads filled with meteor craters and that the Maruti alto is India's favourite little car, I think the ground clearence was prioritized. The Kwid, Celerio, S-Presso,and such indian-market targetted cars always have a higher than usual ride height (compare a Maruti Swift and JDM Swift side by side)

And also the overhangs are low on the alto. Every wheel is close to the corners of the body, that makes things easy as well.

Nice pic and happy miles ahead!

Just a few weeks back I saw decent 2008 ZC71s for under 4 mil. Now its all close to 4.5 atleast.

Buy an old hacked (which is what most of them are underneath the shiny clearcoat) german or any other euro for the matter and you will soon be on your knees for that camry again.

Try to get a project without selling the Camry.

Car hobby is now a fools errand in Sri Lanka with the current situation. There is practically very little ways to enjoy it without losing your sanity or large amounts of money. I really dont want this site to die because of the tons of valuable knowledge and resources saved thanks to it and its one of the only place where realists and people with sense meet.

I have made some close golden friends/brothers here as well

  8. At a point where I might have to do away with project cars/beaters/shitboxes and move onto a less-dramatic reliable second car on a budget - what does the A/L community suggest?

K11s are good dailys. 2 doors can be had for under 2 mil. Save up some cash for preventive maintenance and wheels, u should be good to go.

Lets not let this forum die.

Haha someone else is on the same boat as me. I went from scrolling through old VWs, Volvos and Peugeots to now looking at WagonRs and Marchs.

Im selling the 406 and some of my motorbikes too. Dont ride much anymore. Getting into other hobbies as well.

As for what to suggest, dont know what budget range you are hunting in but if its under 4 mil:

3rd gen Demios are nice fun little economical cars for the budget.

The 2010 Cerato, solid car in my experience in terms of driving, reliability, parts prices, looks and build.

Beetle swift is a decent driver too.

      If its under 3 mil:

      K11 March. Full stop.

Anyone here who has done that? Is it a case of you get what you pay for? Or is it a complete waste of time and money?

@pantheraleoyes i did get them refurbished at Lanka shocks wattala. 1000kms done and so far nothing of note. Another guy claimed to have done 30k with no issues so far. Lets see how they hold up.

That's crazy. But can't blame the guy for trying these days. In the past few months, I've seen negotiations where the seller cut down 20- 30% of the asking price on some old cars and motorcycles. Could chalk it down to either exaggeration of prices or urgent selling.

Newer vehicles and luxury vehicles are holding steady.

Even I heard the magic number and I hope it's not true, cause it's not worth it at that point. But then again, there are buggers asking upwards of 5 mil for a 2017 Grand i10.

    1. AVANTE

      AVANTE

I read somewhere that they only issued about 6 of these permits so far. Not sure of the authenticity of that statement.

With the current tax structure, I don't think it's bound to become popular. But then again, anyone lucky to obtain it can be equipped with the ability to abuse it, like what Matroska said.

  17. I will never buy a Black Color car again, crow shit leaves stains on the paint if its literally only there for a day. Now gotten into waxing it everytime I wash it.

    1. AVANTE

      AVANTE

Not to mention it hides the lines and details of a cars design, and swirl marks/scratches are more visible. It takes more effort to make a black car look good.

Also bird poo, that shits like acid, regardless of color. Will eat through your lacquer especially during hot days where the process is expedited, unless you react quick or have a protective film/layer on the paint surface.

Also don't forget to water down your car after a day out in the rain. Acid rain messed up with mirrors and paint.

  18. Tucson 2012 or Rexton 2008/2009 model ? both are diesels which one is better and reliable?

    1. AVANTE

      AVANTE

@PerfMadI would think that if anyone has experience fixing Hyundai/Kia/Ssangyong, he can handle Tucson/Sportage and such. The concept and engineering philosophy is same.

      Hyundai company owns Kia.

Also, look into the Hyundai SantaFe, decent 7 seater with alot of power and options for the price budget. But again, make sure of parts availability.

    1. AVANTE

      AVANTE

Any vehicle would reach 200,000km with enough money thrown at it. The real question is, which would do it for less.

Tucson seems to be the safer choice but before you commit, do check up on the parts situation and common issues of both vehicles, just a heads up to avoid nasty surprises in ownership (even though parts are plenty for both models). Best way to go about this is to contact an owner through an owners club, garage or even here in AL.

Check the average price/ease of availability/number of dealers (Ajantha seems to be popular choice for Korean makes).

  21. Need legal advice!

I have an old car with me thats been in the family for ages. It originally had the “book” and now has a green paper for the registration.

We just noticed is has a few errors in it.

1.The Name of Make is incorrect by 1 letter (O instead of E)

    2. The name of model Has N, Instead of L.

    3.seating capacity is “-1” (it’s a 2 door, 4 seater)

    4. The tire size says 560x15? I don’t know if this is an issue.

It’s not had any issues with cops or anything. We do the yearly registration/insurance with no issues. It's a 1975, so no eco-test.

Can we get these errors fixed? Also whats the legal standing right now?

We have it since 2006. Kind of in a rush,as I just started restoring it!

    oh btw it’s a 1975 VW Golf-L “Swallowtail”

(2 Door 1.1L and quite rare I’m told)

    Thanks guys!

      Inbox enna.

Actually you can ignore those errors. It happens during the transition from old books to new "computer" books. Have seen several instances. Sometimes even the model might have the word "invalid" if it's a really old little clunker.

  22. what are your insights on purchasing a evo 4/5 or sti 4/5 probably a conversion? How about the durability of the parts and how difficult is it to source parts? Is it a good decision as im planning to use it as a daily and roughly do 1500km per month..

    1. AVANTE

Go for a starlet GT bro. 132hp but it feels fast cuz it's light. Fulfills your chus chus need also.

Maintenance is just like a normal car, it's the best of both worlds.

    1. AVANTE

      AVANTE

Is it a good "performance" car? Yes

      Is it economical? Haha

You need to pump 95 petrol, the average economy is somewhere around 6 - 7kmpl

You need to change the transfer case and differential oils once an year if you plan to run a mileage of 1500km a month.

Parts durability will be as strong as any other Mitsubishi. It's just that maintenance costs start to rack up the more mods there are on the car. They are reliable if maintained, just like any other car. Also, Evo specfic parts can be pricey in Lanka. Some even quote delusional prices (saw an OEM exhaust set for 250k something once). But aftermarket support is just next level.

Also the deal with conversions, you have to see if it's done right. Almost 90% of conversions don't have a working AYC system. Some don't even have AWD! Have to make sure the rubber components are in order, else you have to do some preventive maintenance there. Most of them are hacked by boy racers, hard launches ruin the differential and clutch.

If you find a good example, awesome! But they don't come cheap (relatively).

  24. Seems like Merc project will come to an end. No time to spend on it to follow it up due to this covid situation and my availability. Someone has seen the car and it interested in it. Might sell it to him to continue with the remaining part of the project :(

    1. AVANTE

      AVANTE

      Ado no.

But then again, I get what you mean. Projects can suck. Parts are no where to be found sometimes, lying buggers, scammers, mechanics are lethargic and can screw up the work, now Corona.

I respect your dedication. I'm here already fed up of my Hawk 250 and now I think I'm going to sell it. Have talked to a few interested parties. It has been plagued by the above mentioned issues too as most projects are.

Its been 7 months and it has only run 3 kms... Just 3.

Yesterday I was working on the brakes and I found a wooden block in place of the brake pad.. Wooden brake pad. The bike has been kept well on the outside, no leaks, chrome is well kept, wiring works, all the meters and dash worked, etc.impressive on a 36 year old motorbike.

But on the inside, it seems to have been the playground of a bunch of Maka bases.

The calipers have been hand painted, wood brake pads, dirty air filter, broken chain adjusters, it had the wrong rocker arms, engine valves from a Bajaj pulsar, both carbs leaking from almost every orifice, main harness under the frame has been pecked...but being a Honda, it ran without complaint.

I managed to fix most of the above issues and am impressed myself as all the others I have met in the hawk club seem to be atleast 15-20 years older than me as these are the only people who know them or have run them in the past.

But end of the day, I'm young, I'm not ultra-rich, I'm no Freddie Alles or Jay Leno, I'm not an early-retirement case.. Resources and time are limited, have to use that time either learning or putting miles on the odometer. There's a certain point after which you get fed up and it just isn't worth it anymore.

So I guess, it's sad but alright to move on. Wanted to see your completed W124, a fan of them myself, which you already knew.

Hopefully, when the resources are in place, can get ourselves into one someday! One can never know, right?
